A fjard is similar in origin and geologic structure to a Fjord. It is also a submerged glacial valley. Fjards are found in low lying coastal areas instead of the comparatively severe immediate land elevation surrounding fjords.
A good example is Somes Sound in Acadia National Park, Maine.
