The Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research or AcSIR is an Indian institute of national importance, head quartered at the CSIR Campus, Taramani, Chennai. The institute was established for the purpose of granting doctoral and post-doctoral degrees.[1][1] The establishment of the AcSIR allows for a centralized institution to manage this research. Creation of the AcSIR was enabled by legislation of the Lok Sabha in 2010.[1] This same legislation labeled the Academy as an "Institute of National Importance".[1]

Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) was established in 2010 by a resolution of the Government of India on June 17, 2010[2] and the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research Act, 2011 notified on April 3, 2012, as an 'Institution of National Importance', with an aim of furtherance of advancement of learning and research in the field of Science & Technology and their interfaces in association with Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India.[3]

It is a meta-university with study centers in 37 laboratories and 6 units of CSIR, spread across 23 cities of India.

First Chairperson[edit]

National Research Professor Prof. R.A. Mashelkar was appointed as first Chairperson of AcSIR, making him first formal head after Prof. S.K. Brahmachari, former Acting Chairperson of interim AcSIR and Director General, CSIR and now Vice-Chairperson, AcSIR.

SIRO recognition[edit]

Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science & Technology, GoI has recognized AcSIR as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO).

About[edit]

Established in 2011 as an ‘Institution of National Importance’ (interim operations started in June, 2010), the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) will impart instruction and provide research opportunities in areas that are not routinely taught in academic universities in India.

The Academy has about 2200 full-time faculty members from CSIR Laboratories, over 2000 students enrolled in programmes and 7 non-academic staff members.
