Template editor

(add requestview requests)

User:J JMesserly

Hi I noticed I can't edit Templates anymore. I have created several Templates over the years, some are used on thousands of pages, EG Template:Start-date and some use some fairly complex template coding techniques. As a veteran template writer, I comprehend the issues about template editing especially with those that are heavily used. I seldom see the need to create a new template these days because we have so many good ones. However I would like to have Template editing rights restored in the event that some editor or editors want me to create, fix or add a feature to a template that I or someone else wrote. Thanks J JMesserly (talk) 03:18, 28 November 2022 (UTC) J JMesserly (talk) 03:18, 28 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Comment: All of this venerable editor's template creations (you created {{Marriage}}? Thanks! I'm a big fan.) are from 2008 and 2009, and norms have probably changed quite a bit since then. The editor has four edits in Template and Template Talk space since 2012. I would recommend a fresh start with some sandbox edits and edit requests, followed by re-application for the TE user right, if needed. – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:40, 28 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I find myself in agreement with Jonesey here; only one template-space edit in 2021 and three Template Talk edits around the same time period since 2012. I would have no issue granting if there was (significantly) more editing in this area. Will leave this open a day or two for other admin opinions. Yes, I created Marriage. I very much appreciate the need for better control of template changes and can see that in its more mature environment, perhaps wikipedia has no further need of the kinds of contributions to templates that I can provide. I suppose if I ever needed to add an infobox or saw why the parser functions on a template were being such a burden on the servers (I was curious about why template:ill is such a pig when I noticed the warning), I could just submit the change to someone with the credential. Withdrawing request. I misunderstood what this flag is for. I thought it meant that I could not edit anything in the Template: namespace, which is clearly not the case as I noticed today. I do not see that I have a need for editing any established high use templates. I trust that class of tasks is well in hand, and there is no shortage of parserfunction jocks who know their way around the odd vagaraties of template code evaluation. I withdraw my request. My ignorance caused me to waste your time. Please accept my apologies. WP is strong because of the care and patience of contributors such as you.  Request withdrawn (for the bot). No worries J, I'm glad that we could sort things out in a reasonable fashion. You are, of course, most welcome to re-apply for this perm if you do find yourself needing to edit protected templates on a regular basis. From what I've seen of your older edits, your skills would not be wasted. Primefac (talk) 19:04, 29 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
