The following discussion is an archived debate of the proposed deletion of the miscellaneous page below. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the page's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this page.

The result of the discussion was Delete for User:Cyde/Weird pictures, No Consensus for User talk:Cyde/Weird pictures, User:Seingalt/Gallery, and User:Vanjagenije/golotinja. Full explanation in the long-winded close rationale below.

The gist of the discussion below favors deletion per WP:NOTWEBHOST and WP:POINT, as well as the recently updated guidelines for user page content at Wikipedia:User pages#Images. However, this is a case that produces a number of issues to think about beyond what is directly said in the discussion, in regard to how the closing admin should weight the arguments in the context of broader community consensus:

  1. The nominated page has been at MFD three times previously, and although there were recently changes made to the wording of Wikipedia:User pages as it regards sexual imagery (per discussions currently found here, here and here), one of the points made in the discussion was about consistency with past MFD results, with the previous MFD for this page (which closed as "keep") being mentioned as an example.
  2. On the other hand, that MFD closed in November 2009, and consensus can change. In particular, sexual imagery has been subject to a great deal of discussion in recent months, both here and at Commons, which could have moved attitudes about this page to a different consensus than existed during past MFDs for it.
  3. As noted in WP:UPNOT, MFD traditionally gives greater latitude for user page content to users with a history of significant contribution to the encyclopedia, and there is no doubt that Cyde (talk · contribs) has a long history of positive contributions as an editor and admin. Although Cyde has not edited the page since January 2007 and has not participated in this MFD (he has only one edit on en-wiki since this discussion was listed), he did defend it in the previous MFD, and thus presumably maintains an interest in preserving it.
  4. There is, however, no clear designation for how much latitude is to be accorded to whom, so it is difficult to use this for weighting arguments. The majority in the present discussion does not seem inclined to give Cyde latitude for this gallery, his contributions notwithstanding.
  5. On a somewhat different note: The nomination almost offhandedly "throw(s) in" three other pages (User talk:Cyde/Weird pictures, User:Seingalt/Gallery, and User:Vanjagenije/golotinja), but the subsequent discussion makes no explicit mention of any of them, and some of the arguments focus on specifics related to User:Cyde/Weird pictures only or refer to it using singular nouns/pronouns, suggesting that the nomination of additional pages has been overlooked/disregarded in the discussion.

Overall, I believe points 1-4 largely cancel one another out as grounds for weighting the arguments of either side up or down, and I am left with what is immediately present in the discussion: the viewpoint favoring deletion is cogently grounded in en-wiki policies/guidelines and is by far the majority sentiment. Therefore, I am closing this discussion as Delete for User:Cyde/Weird pictures. However, given the absence of discussion clearly related to the other three pages mentioned in the nomination, I am closing it as No Consensus for the other pages. No prejudice against speedy renomination of any of those in separate discussions where they can get their due attention. --RL0919 (talk) 03:24, 31 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

User:Cyde/Weird pictures[edit]

Per general consensus at WT:User pages/Archive 7#RfC: Sexually provocative content in userspace, where consensus was to generally delete these pages via WP:NOTWEBHOST and to discourage inappropriate use of WP:NOTCENSORED, I hereby nominate this page for MfD, and I would also like to throw in User talk:Cyde/Weird pictures per WP:SOAPBOX, User:Seingalt/Gallery, and User:Vanjagenije/golotinja. Note that Cyde's userpage has been nominated thrice for deletion prior to this (see Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Ewlyahoocom/WikiPorn, Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Cyde/Weird pictures, and Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Cyde/Weird pictures (2nd nomination)) and has been kept for all three mfds. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 15:29, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep because they're hot Delete these pages serve no purpose except WP:POINT. Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Otters want attention) 17:58, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep for the reasons delinated in the second MFD Purplebackpack89 18:28, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete The default perspective is that wiki is not censored. That is the reality of the project. The amount of graphic images and types probably found in this userspace is no different than the wiki article, List of sex positions. However this userspace (which in addition falls under that it should not to be used as a web host) is not an article, It should be used with the spirit of advancing the project, developing subsequent pages. My interpretation of the page is that it points out that wiki is uncensored and serves as a warning to watch out because thats whats out there, that we should make changes to the censorship policies, otherwise this is what we can do, to me it serves to discredit the policy and its interpretation. I fully respect wiki as being uncensoreced and belive in that, but I believe this page exists to make a point in an extreme. Ottawa4ever (talk) 23:40, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete There is absolutely no point in keeping this. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 04:16, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - per Ottawa4ever, whose arguments here I find convincing. Jusdafax 17:17, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. Reduce the thumb size possibly. It remains interesting to review which images my government is silently censoring. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 22:20, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per WP:NOTWEBHOST and WP:POINT. Articles are not censored, meaning that article content is judged on its encyclopedic merit regardless of whether it may offend some. That does not apply to userspace which should encourage collaboration. There may have been a valid reason to list weird pictures at some time, but that time has passed; now the list merely encourages others to engage in userspace activities that do not help the encyclopedia. • Keep JW has removed most of the truly offensive images at Commons - no one should be particularly dismayyed by this page. "Censorship" is not the issue - the issue is that galleries of reasonable size using Commons images under GFDL are generally allowed in userspace. Userspace does not require that userpages by suitable for mainspace articles. Nor is "pointless" a valid reason for deletion in userspace <g>. Collect (talk) 15:28, 26 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. While we don't generally want to mess with people's userpages, this is quite a bit over the top. I will also say this: Cyde is an admin, which is supposed to be a position of trust and leadership role model and all, and this page has been nominated for deletion now three times. It would be a kindness and a manifestation of wisdom if Cyde would just delete it in the interests of good comradeship. Herostratus (talk) 19:28, 26 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete I do not see how the project is served by placing all those images in a subpage which looks to be no more than a free porn site. Maybe Cyde is trying to make a political point about censorship and freedom, but wikipedia is not the place to do that; a personal webpage is. The fact that wikipedia is not censored does not ipso facto mean everything goes; it means we are unconstrained to a certain extent in building the project. This seems to be a meta issue that is properly handled outside of project space. -- Avi (talk) 03:23, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm not sure about Cyde's intended point, but I think it was about testing censorship of wikipedia, and of commons. During a previous MfD, I discovered that the Australian government was silently screening Cydes actual subpage entirely (but not on the secure server). On investigation, I found that some, but not all, included images were censored at the national level. At this time, it seems that there is no censorship, assume that the several broken links are nothing more than broken links. So, I think that this page has a worthwhile purpose.
  • This is not what the page looks like in casual viewing. The above "purpose" would be better maintained with an explanation, and by moving the images below the fold and/or reducing the thumb size to reduce astonishment/Not safe for work issues. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 04:13, 30 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
