Category:Kentucky women news anchors[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge all. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 21:21, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT for an overly narrow and non-defining intersection of characteristics. We do not have any established scheme of "[US State] women news anchors" for this to be a part of, but Kentucky news anchors don't have any special need for a standalone category that other states don't have -- and since television anchors frequently change employers over the course of their careers, building this out to its natural "every state gets one of these" conclusion would lead to extreme category bloat as individual anchors could have to be categorized for multiple states. So for all of those reasons, this isn't needed for just three people.
The Category:Journalists from Kentucky category isn't large enough to need diffusion at all — and while Category:American women television journalists is large enough that some diffusion might be useful, this won't make it any larger because the three people here are all already in that other one alongside this anyway, and an Category:American women television news anchors vs. Category:American women television reporters and correspondents split would be a more useful and important and defining distinction than a by-state scheme. Nominator's rationale: This category is not defining for empires: See Category:Writers from the British Empire [1] Mason (talk) 21:15, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note: the members are now all categorised directly by a more specific nationality. – Fayenatic London 08:41, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Male murder victims[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete. The arguments for keeping were quite weak - WP:CATGENDER is the clear policy-based argument here. For such a category to be viable, there would need to be a clearer connection between the gender and the crime. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 17:12, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:CATGENDER. I know there is Category:Female murder victims, but does this automatically make a male category necessary, and eligible? Parent Category:Incidents of violence against men states is for "incidents of gender-based violence against men or boys", and it is a fair to assume that most murders in this category are not gender-related. Deletion because there are a lot of options in Category:Murder victims under which articles are categorized by features that are actually defining, starting with nationality. Place Clichy (talk) 20:44, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Comment. If not kept, the category should be upmerged to Category:Murder victims Mason (talk) 21:44, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Respectfully, I don't think so. All articles should already be in more precise Murder victims categories, no need to flood the root with 1800+ articles. A PetScan query gives me 150 articles (out of 1,861) that are not there, but many of them are about murders rather than victims (some of them in both Category:Female murder victims and Category:Male murder victims such as Murder of the Krim siblings). I'm currently browsing the other articles to place them in appropriate geographical categories. Place Clichy (talk) 01:51, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete (don't merge) per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:32, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Just because its not "targeted" and or "Gender related" doesnt mean it shouldnt exist. It would be quite sexist to have a category for Women, and not for men. MassiveMan (talk) 15:14 11 November 2023 (MST)
That's a complete departure from our guidelines, notably Categorization by defining characteristics and WP:CATGENDER: A gender-specific category could be implemented where gender has a specific relation to the topic. [...] Do not create separate categories for male and female occupants of the same position, such as "Male Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom" vs. "Female Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom".. Place Clichy (talk) 16:16, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep There are specific patterns of murders linked to the gender of the perpetrator and the victim. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 15:47, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@LaundryPizza03: to clarify, do you mean that this category should be restricted to murders that were gender-motivated? Or where the murderer is of the opposite gender? Currently, a very large majority of the incidents behind this category are not motivated by gender at all (e.g. a politician assassinating another one to take power). In either case, a massive purge should follow. Place Clichy (talk) 16:16, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Neither, it's that some types of motives are much more common for male than female victims. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 16:18, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Which motives would justify inclusion in the category then, according to you? Or is motive irrelevant, as long as the victim is male? Place Clichy (talk) 17:02, 14 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: small cat with 2 family members (a father son pair) no interlanguage links Mason (talk) 20:30, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: rename. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 21:12, 12 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: rename per actual content, and in order to clarify that this is not about people from Prussia proper, the easternmost province of the kingdom. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:21, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Prussia only became a kingdom in 1701. The state didn't change much besides the name. Marcelus (talk) 20:14, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • It certainly did. It used to be a Polish fief and it became a major power in the Holy Roman Empire. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:11, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    It wasn't a Polish fief since 1657 Marcelus (talk) 15:14, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • It did not become a major power in the Holy Roman Empire until 1701. Until this year "Prussian people" were people from Prussia proper. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:14, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Not true. Brandenburg wasn't part of the Kingdom of Prussia until 1806, when the Empire is abolished. I really encourage you to check sources. Marcelus (talk) 22:59, 7 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: delete, not a defining characteristic of any of the three articles. Just the fact that a main character's name is Kowalski is not a guarantee that it is about Polish diaspora. Marcocapelle (talk) 14:10, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 19:53, 27 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: merge for now, currently 1-3 articles in each of these categories, no objection to recreation of any of these categories when they can be better populated. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:00, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Support per nom Mason (talk) 20:31, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Correct, but I don't think an article about a Hindu temple properly belongs in a category like that. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:50, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. These categories seem to mostly have been attack categories from the start. I had myself added some categories for historical context, but it seems that the creator couldn't care less. Place Clichy (talk) 14:40, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Why not merge? Because they're attack categories? Qwerfjkltalk 17:16, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: We do not categorise emigrants by ethnicity, but only by the (former) nationality. The target category applies in all 3 cases. – Fayenatic London 08:32, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
