Great work with The House of the Seven Gables (novel) - that article has been in need of some attention for some time. I am requesting, though, a citation for the quote from (presumably) Hawthorne that you used in the themes section. If you get a chance, could you plug in your source using in-line citation? Hi I've just seen your edits. Are you sure the title is without the article? Actually I've just removed all the redirects from The opera corpus because they interfere with the stats etc. and it confuses things to have separate works combined. I still argue that the second image is unnecessary because the reader's understanding is not enhanced by seeing the book's cover. It's a cosmetic differencet, the "brand new chapter" logo, which is already better-covered in the text itself. hbdragon88 (talk) 19:15, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry if you feel I have been mis-rating articles. I always do my best, but, as you point out, I do rate a large number of articles (mostly, I am trying to reduce the workload to a more manageable number - I will take more care when there are fewer waiting) and I don't always take as much time as I could over each article. Generally, it is fairly obvious which category it belongs in, but I often have trouble with more borderline articles, and I tend to rate harshly - I am still not completely used to the new guidelines. If you feel I have been unfair, feel free to remove the rating and I will rate it again soon - although the same problems may occur - or else request an assessment. About your recent creation of a disambiguation page: I wonder if you have taken into account the considerable number of links to "Carnegie Medal" which will now need to be disambiguated. I really think it is an unhelpful move, as the premier children's literature award in the United Kingdom is commonly referred to simply as the Carnegie Medal, whereas the other medal does not have its own page and seems to be generally referred to on linking pages as the "Carnegie Hero Fund Medal".

I would prefer that the previous arrangement be restored, with a hatnote saying "For the Carnegie Medal for Heroism, see..." etc. Otherwise "Carnegie Medal" could redirect to "Carnegie Medal in Literature" also with a hatnote, though I think that would be messier. It's my understanding that bots follow behind and correct the links to the original page. Am I incorrect regarding this?

I'm curious if Carnegie has more than 2 medals? As you can see from their official home page, Carnegie simply calls the heroism award the "Carnegie Medal":

The Medal for Heroism dates back to 1904 and for Literature to 1936. I believe that should indicate they have more or less equal footing. What do you think?

Thank you for your note. I've given it some thought and read the relevant pages. I'm pretty sure bots don't fix the links - just double redirects, which don't apply here. See this from Wikipedia:Disambiguation:

Before moving an article to a qualified name (in order to create a disambiguation page at the base name), click on What links here to find all of the incoming links. Repair all of those incoming links to use the new article name.

It also advises using disambiguation links/hatnotes where only two pages are involved. Although it is true the heroism medal is older, and has more recipients too, the literature award is definitely the primary page - it has over ten times the number of incoming links and about ten times the page views. I checked over the links and found three which should have gone to the Carnegie Hero Fund (now fixed), so there is obviously some confusion, but only a quite small amount. Hi again. You're clearly more experienced. I've learned from the information you provided (and have much more to learn).

In defense, I can only say this:

• The move pages says bots will follow within 'a few days' and correct the links.
• If the links aren't fixed by bots, by the very nature of Wikipedia they will be corrected over time. In any case, the most that would be required would be a second click.
• I am uncomfortable to relegating an article about nearly 10,000 recipients who risked (and often gave) their lives to being subordinate to fewer than 100 recipients being honored for children's books.
• Do we know for certain there are only 2 Carnegie medals? It seems the 2 categories we know about were unaware of each other.

In any case, I see you've executed a fait accompli, so my argument is moot.

It is obviously not a question of worthiness, just a matter of which page gets the most use and traffic within Wikipedia. And in fact, the heroism medal does not even have a whole page of its own.

However, it is the links which really concern me; disambiguation pages should not have incoming links which belong to another page - I don't use bots, but I don't believe bots fix this; there is a whole Wikiproject devoted to changing such links manually. I changed the Carnegie Medal page redirect to fix the links problem. You could change all the links so they go directly to the literature page (though I'm not happy about the title of it - the award really is just called the Carnegie Medal, not in or for anything), then the Carnegie Medal page would eventually be free. You could ask the opinion of people on both the talk pages and perhaps enlist some help.

Meanwhile, I have compromised - "Carnegie medal" (small "m") goes to the disambiguation page. This is what people would usually type in the search box.

I have actually found two others: The Andrew Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy (founded 2001) - which has a section in Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; and the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children's Video (founded 1991), not currently mentioned in Wikipedia. Neither is just known as the Carnegie Medal, and they are not hatnote material, but they could go on the disambiguation page.

I don't see why we need disambiguation — "Bank of Cairo" is a redlink, so people won't accidentally end up at a West Virginia bank instead of an Egyptian one, or vice versa. Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion, guidelines for use at WP:MINOR). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and all users will still be able to manually mark their edits as being minor in the usual way.

For well-established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Hi Robina, I notice HighKing is challenging your use of the British Isles terminology. It might be worth you looking at the background behind this challenge. You could look at his edit history and also mine; you will probably be astounded at what's been going on. For my part, I don't have a problem with the use of British Isles in the article. Hi. Does WP:MOSNUM imply that Carnegie Medal succession boxes should not link the award date to Category:Years in literature. At The Machine Gunners (revision history) I have retained that one change while reverting Retrieved-date format changes that were not "per WP:MOSNUM".

I'll admit I don't know what the Manual of Style says about this, though from a quick glance at the numbers page, there isn't anything there. The relevant page would probably be WP:MOSLINKS which has a paragraph on Year linking. I based the Carnegie Medal box on the Newbery Medal box, which has the links to "years in literature". I think it's a useful link. As far as dates are concerned, I generally prefer an easily read date to a computerized one, but for "Retrieved on...", the latter seems reasonable. I generally go with WikiProject Children's literature in regarding young adult literature as a subset of children's literature. There is no real dividing line, and classifying older books is particularly problematic. So, my policy is for the category to have a short name like "Children's novels about horses" and for young adult be added to the description line "... for children and young adults." Young adult fantasy novels has its own genre category, but that is a particularly large genre, and the category is included in Children's fantasy novels (admittedly, I did that just now, but it seemed reasonable).

I will be adding more books to the Children's novels about horses category from Novels about horses soon – feel free to help! Maybe some of the Pony books belong there too. Well, I moved it because Bannertail: The Story of Gray Squirrel is simply wrong – it's copied from the anime title. I called the new article just Bannertail, without a subtitle, following Wikipedia's naming conventions on subtitles. It is a short title, but it doesn't need disambiguation. I've created a redirect page from Bannertail: The Story of a Graysquirrel.

On titles, you might be interested to know that Wikipedia has fixed rules about capitalization: see Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Capital letters#Composition titles.

Hi, Robina. I see that you are at work creating and populating categories such as Canadian children's illustrators, German children's literature, etc.

User:P64/FSF/Children's/VIAF#English-speaking nominees (section 2.3.7 of my most complicated User page) is mainly a table that lists and links (blue and red uptodate about a year ago) all of the writers and illustrators nominated for the biennial Hans Christian Andersen Award by Canada (the last two of eight columns, which are below USA in the third and fourth columns, and beside AU-NZ in the fifth and sixth columns) --beginning with Roderick Haig-Brown at the head of the seventh column.

It goes without saying that 'Canadian' is national and covers both English- and French-language work. For 'German', et al. on the other hand, there should be some preface that addresses the category scope. The simplest may be essentially "See also Austrian and Swiss children's literature".

Do you understand the arrangement of Category:Canadian children's illustrators, which has subcategories Canadian children's book illustrators and Governor General's Award-winning children's illustrators and 13 biography pages (of which I added about half before noticing this point). For one, what I find from Canada Council for the Arts (via our GGAward citations) for the Governor General's Awards suggests that the "children's illustration" award is strictly for illustration of books --one book of the year, i understand. It certainly seems to be non-standard. I would suggest making Category:Canadian children's illustrators a redirect [see WP:Categories for discussion#Redirecting categories] to Category:Canadian children's book illustrators and putting the GGA category in the latter too. My preference would be to add the GGA winners to the general category – some are there already. I wouldn't say "British" is nebulous – it's British nationality that people have, after all – and I think in this case "English" is over-specific. There are only 64 pages in the category "British comedy novels", and there are no Scottish or Welsh comedy novel categories, which is often why English categories are introduced. Mostly, though, when I looked at the category there was only one novel in it, except for the one I'd just added, so it seemed rather pointless. I think one should either go all out to populate subcategories or not have them. However, if you prefer to keep it, just add some. Any time you want to make the draft an article, use the "move" function (under "More" in the tab at the top). I'd recommend naming the article just "Sapphire the Dragon" as there is no other article of that name, so you don't need the "(novel)" disambiguation. However, at the moment I do not believe the article would pass the Notability criteria, so it might get deleted fairly quickly. As a draft it is protected from deletion on notability grounds. The novel would need to get some substantial reviews or other media coverage, win an award, or be adapted for film or television, for example, to be safe. Alternatively, you could redirect "Sapphire the Dragon" to an article on the author if you have enough material there.

By the way, could you include something in the article to explain why it's a "science fiction" novel rather than fantasy (dragons being more typical of fantasy)? Is it set on another planet? Did the visitor come in a spaceship? ---- Robina Fox (talk) 03:40, 10 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Really I am not the best person to ask because I'm not specially involved in Projects at all and mostly Children's Literature. In Projects generally, members collaborate on articles related to the subject, discussing how to improve them. At least in theory. Some are not very active. You should have a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Literature and see if they are doing anything at the moment you would be interested in. If you sign up as a member you'll get notifications on your Talk page from time to time. The project deals with literature in general, history, genres, movements, organizations, literary criticism. Various aspects of literature have their own projects, like wp:WikiProject Books, wp:WikiProject Novels, wp:WikiProject Shakespeare.

Then there are the more specialized Task Forces. You might be interested in the Rick Riordan Task Force, for example.
