Hello, Altenmann. I wanted to let you know that I’m proposing an article that you started, Dérogeance, for deletion because I don't think it meets our criteria for inclusion. If you don't want the article deleted:

  1. edit the page
  2. remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
  3. save the page

Also, be sure to explain why you think the article should be kept in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you don't do so, it may be deleted later anyway.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks, GAtechnical (talk) 13:08, 15 February 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, I can't answer that question about the source of the information. My only interest in the article was to bring it into line with the biography standards by moving the place of birth from the introductory sentence to elsewhere. You would have to look further back in the edit history to find out who introduced the information. Deb (talk) 12:11, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Move reverted.

Information icon Hello, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Your bold move of Blend has been reverted because an editor has found it to be controversial. Per Wikipedia:Requested moves, a move request must be placed on the article's talk page, and the request be open for discussion for seven days, "if there is any reason to believe a move would be contested". If you believe that this move is appropriate, please initiate such a discussion. Please note that moving a page with a longstanding title and/or a large number of incoming links is more likely to be considered controversial, and may be contested. Please note that moves that orphan large numbers of links, or create large numbers of disambiguation links, are likely to be considered controversial, and should always be discussed prior to the move. bd2412 T 18:21, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Also, please do not add templates to redirect pages, other than those designed to categorize the redirect itself for maintenance purposes. Speedy deletion nomination of Cheryl Donegan

Hello Altenmann,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Cheryl Donegan for deletion, because it seems to be promotional, rather than an encyclopedia article.

Why have you removed [1], [2] the Category:Russian words and phrases from the articles Gulag and Psikhushka? Aren't you sure that the words gulag and psikhushka fall into the Category:Russian words and phrases? --Psychiatrick (talk) 10:13, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

My solution

Greets to all. I trust I will not suffer any historical punishment for my temerity!;)

I stumbled on this and consider that both words belong in the sub category of Category:Russian words and phrases, Category:Soviet phraseology where I have placed them. I am not an expert in the subject, nor in the language but they seem to be me to be of particular usage in the Soviet era. --DadaNeem (talk) 20:25, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

No I wouldn't. To make a good article on the (quite controversial) subject would be beyond my skills. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Industrial Designers Society of America requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Industrial_Designers_Society_of_America. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. I confess I missed that there may have been a non-problematic version originally. I see that the problem tracks back to 2009, with the edit summary Big CHANGE. Added history article directly from IDSA site. Duh. Why didn't IDSA do this?. As Dennis noted on Kydpung's page, I can restore it to the pre-2009 version, although there's not much there, and it isn't sourced. While not a BLP, so no automatic requirement for sources, I doubt it would pass an AfD. It would be nice if someone wanted to start over and create at least a passable stub. Is that someone you are interested in doing? If not, seems like a waste of time to restore, then propose for deletion.--S Philbrick(Talk) 12:57, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

@User:Sphilbrick - yes it would be nice if you restore pre-copyvio version. i confess i don't even remember why i created tris article. there must have been a solid reason, since it is far away from my interests. may be my text will help me to remember the reason so that i can clarify the notability and add sources i didn't bother with in these early days. thanks, -No.Altenmann >t 14:59, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

I see that someone has created a passable stub. Does this meet your needs? I'm not sure how to recover the earlier version, but will figure it out if necessary. (On line for a few minutes, then off until late Thursday or early Friday)--S Philbrick(Talk) 23:52, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

Why are you editing old comments on talk pages?

I noticed that you have been making the same or similar edits to old comments on many article talk pages (such as here and here). At first, I thought you were new and didn't know that editing others' comments on talk pages is against policy, but you've been editing here a long time. Why are you doing it? — Gorthian (talk) 18:56, 12 July 2014 (UTC)

@Gorthian: Did you read the policy carefully? I don't edit old comments, I am formatting them. Not to say that they are mine :-) -No.Altenmann >t 03:30, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
No, I did not think you were claiming ownership of the comments. But the way you are formatting them doesn't make any sense. I see that you created a template, and are using it for the edits. I'm sorry, but I think the template is a bad idea, and it is badly implemented. In the guidelines I linked to, it says "fixing format errors that render material difficult to read" might be appropriate, but your template makes comments more difficult to read, in my view.
Was this template ever a subject of discussion? If not, it should be, and there should be consensus about its use before it gets implemented. — Gorthian (talk) 08:25, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
@Gorthian: This is talk page and this is my comment, so I can do what I want. And how can it make more difficult to read?. Please read the template purpose and tell me whether you agree that beyond scandals wikipedia nobody really cares about mundane history of wikipedia, and we must apply more effort to document this unique experiment. As you may know, I was banned from wikipedia, but unlike some, I did not get mad neither at the project nor at the community, and I never cease to be fascinated by what's going on. -No.Altenmann >t 15:10, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
But the entire history of each page of Wikipedia IS documented. Your template is modifying other people's comments, which should not be done. I agree that Wikipedia is a fascinating place and process. :-) But your template does not help the way you want it to. Adding the numeral 1 and the word "birth" make each comment sound like nonsense, and it is confusing for readers. — Gorthian (talk) 19:53, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
Once again, I don't modify other people comments. Laudak was my account. "1. Birth" makes sense if you pay attention to the section title, which is "article life". The article history is NOT documented. Documented is the edit history, a technical term that has noting to do with what is written in the template, namely why and how something happened with the article. Nevertheless, now I see that my intentions will be difficult to maintain. Therefor I will simplify the template for now. -No.Altenmann >t 20:17, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
Ah! I did not know Laudak was your account. The guidelines still discourage editing even your own comments on talk pages, but that is somewhat more acceptable than editing other's comments. It would be interesting to know why each page was created, but I think that you would have an uphill battle to convince editors to document their reasons. IRL, my co-workers are reluctant to put in the small extra effort required to add metadata when they update a database. This would be similar. — Gorthian (talk) 20:40, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
@Gorthian: <sigh> Don't I know that! For many years I used to single-handedly run the category:Wikipedia years, with pages like Wikipedia:2008... My problem is that I am a very asocial person, with poor personal communication skills. So that I cannot force myself and announce my pet historical projects to broader community. -No.Altenmann >t 20:47, 13 July 2014 (UTC)
I understand. I don't think you are alone in your difficulty. Good luck and best wishes! — Gorthian (talk) 20:59, 13 July 2014 (UTC)

Surname templates

Hi! OK, I will not delete rare items. However, consider that:

  1. I have sacrificed much of my precious time for checking each surname in many sources;
  2. it is a little nonsense to show a surname that has 50 bearers, when all the other have about 20,000.

Best regards, Propositum (talk) 17:39, 22 July 2014 (UTC)

The "Cook" surname template has a link to Povarov which I deleted because this link is a redirect to some scientific article (Povarov reaction) and not to a surname page, or even to anybody with this surname. It's nonsense to have it in a surname template. But don't expect me to haggle about it any further. Kraxler (talk) 02:41, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
@Kraxler: Please do not use the word "nonsense", "inappropriate", etc., in edit summaries and other explanations, since these are wikipedian's opinions. Please use reasons, which lie behind reasons instead. Reasons we may discuss. In particular, your explanation is reasonable; it made me to look into the issue, and I will going to create a appropriate page. Otherwise, how on Earth I may guess why the surname "Povarov" is inappropriate? -No.Altenmann >t 04:07, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
@Propositum:Please see the answer above..... ..... ..... Done? .... Now, to the point. It is not a nonsense, neither little nor big. It may happen that of 50 bearers, 3 have wikipedia bios. There may be other reasons. Like I said in your talk page, it is not a pissing context, it is not a research paper, it is a tool to aid navigation in wikipedia. Today we don't have this article, tomorrow it may appear.
That said, here is a propositio. If you are interested in anthropology, linguistics, we may set up some kind of framework of cooperation in surname topics. Two things come to my mind right away. We may put discuss and forth ground rules for inclusion of surnames in these templates. Second, we may clean up surname articles, to remove repetitions (and sometimes nonsense); say, one basic article per template (IMO the best candidate would be the English version of the surname), and other simply refer to it for generic etymology and lists of variants. Some of these occupational surname articles are good already. -No.Altenmann >t 04:07, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
Hello! I agree with You. Thanks for an interesting proposition of cooperation. My answer is following:
  1. It would be difficult to establish rigid rules of inclusion of surnames in templates. However, it may be for example at least 1,000 bearers according to [7] or [8], or at least one biography on the Wikipedia. But in fact, we should be ready to adapt to various situations, which would probably require different proceeding.
  2. I don't think that such clean-up is necessary. Etymology would be useful on each page. Notice that there are many variants of similar etymology (including roots, spelling, suffixes and alternative meanings). Moreover, we already have lists of variants in templates.
  3. I have also one own proposition: It would be a good idea to focus on creating new templates for other popular European groups of surnames, e.g. those deriving from a given name. We have much work to do, however I think that it is not necessary to make at once very much of them, and they need not to be very detailed. Simply we should focus on the most popular surnames, and later maybe we would go further. We have the page List of the most common surnames in Europe and we should base primarily on it.
  4. And yet one more thing: Maybe You would like to check the correctness of Template:Tinker-surname? It is not sure whether all those names mean the same.

Vital articles

Hi Altenmann,

If you disagree with their decision, you are free to start another thread proposing to readd them. However, can we agree that the vital article tag should be removed for now? It makes no sense to have the tag when the article is not currently a vital article. Malerisch (talk) 02:07, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

@Malerisch: I see. What/who makes an article vital? -No.Altenmann >t 02:09, 28 July 2014 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I don't think the project has a concrete definition of what makes an article vital. It's certainly been a stumbling block for certain proposals in the past, and there have been proposals to create such a definition. But for now, the description of at the top of Wikipedia:Vital articles ("Vital articles is a list of subjects for which Wikipedia should have corresponding high-quality articles.") seems to do an adequate job of describing what vital means.
Are you okay with removing the VA tags then? I see you have removed them. Thanks! Malerisch (talk) 02:18, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Infrablack requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G6 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an orphaned disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates two or fewer extant Wikipedia pages and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic); or
  • disambiguates no (zero) extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

Paul Păun

As a none-year editor on wikipedia, I can assure you that your style of editing and your insistence on adding commercial links as "sources" are bringing the articles down. This is even more salient where you are adding entirely superfluously, as you did in Paul Păun (which already cited sources for those statements). Wikipedia is not a link repository. Please stop to consider what you are doing, and do not take it as a personal remark. And do at least have a look over WP:RS. Dahn (talk) 07:42, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

Ways to improve Anatoli Ivanov (writer)

Hi, I'm Stesmo. Altenmann, thanks for creating Anatoli Ivanov (writer)!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. The only reference on this writer's article Anatoli Ivanov results in an error. Please add some more reliable, third-party references and fix the current one.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse. Stesmo (talk) 17:17, 11 August 2014 (UTC)

Your changes to Sergei Prokofiev

Hello, I wouldn't have any problem with your proposing a link to Dmitri Sontsov, only this leads only to a disambiguation page which is no use to anyone. If you are proposing to write an article, supported with citations to reliable sources, please explain this on Talk:Sergei Prokofiev. Until such an article exists, I can't see the point of making the changes to the page you have made. Alfietucker (talk) 14:48, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

@Alfietucker: have you ever heard the term "work in progress"? And how the link to a family is of no use is your personal opinion. The manor belonged to a noble family. In Russian Empire 95% of land belonged to nobility and aristocracy. Does that surprize you? Or you contest the fact that Sontsovka belonged to Sontsovs? then read the references to complete Prokofiev's bios existing in the article. -No.Altenmann >t
PS and the phrase "isolate rural estate" is a stupidity I don't know where came from. A village of 300 persons at the time can hardly be called "isolated". -No.Altenmann >t 14:56, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Copying and pasting a public domain source seems incredibly lazy, but I can't see where it's against policy. Cheers.
