Recent Changes[edit]

Currently I set the template to use the protected main page version of the logo (which appears on the sister links template).

I recently had it set to another one that looks the same, but has an invisible background intead of white.

TheLimbicOne 20:29, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think we may be better off with the clear background - it does show up white against the grey, although it's not much of a contrast change if you don't have your monitor set brightly. I don't think using a protected image will matter much here. Can you see the difference between background when it's in the template...? If you think it's just irrelevant, it can be left either way...-- stillnotelf has a talk page 23:38, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I could just barely notice the white background on Opera. I thought the "protected" version was more likely to always be up-to-date. Change it if you think the invisible bg makes a difference on your browser. I left my invisible file on the server. Thank you for your help and input. [edit]

The logo on the Wikispecies home page is really nice looking. I'd like to change the logo in this template to one of the following:

1. 2. 3. 4.

TheLimbicOne 23:11, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Go for it! (Also Be Bold!) The last one is a little pixelly, though, do the others shrink down okay? -- stillnotelf has a talk page 23:13, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I agree on number 4 and favor number 2. I haven't tried shrinking them yet. What size do I need to shrink to (that's why I wasn't bold)? TheLimbicOne 00:24, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I hate to say it, but 4 is about the right size. There's not enough text in the template to justify a larger image. I fiddled with the template without hitting the "save" button and found that 2 shrinks nicely if you just paste the file name in to the current template. However, the text at the bottom would need to be removed before you used 2, because it becomes both redundant and impossibly small to read. The graphic still looks nice, though. (3 won't work well at all because of the white background, it clashes with the grey box.) -- stillnotelf has a talk page 05:00, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I found their recent logo contest over at Wikispecies. Unfortunately, while there is a no text version of the file, there isn't one that doesn't have a white background. I know precisely nothing about image editing (other than MS paint is awful). Do you have the tools to remove the text in 2 and keep the background, or should we harass someone over at the other project to help? -- stillnotelf has a talk page 05:08, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I use Adobe Photoshop CS. Somebody commented somewhere on this site that the wiki projects don't like Adobe because it removes "transparency." It was in the context of edit histories. IMHO one program's .png file is as good as any other. I can create a "no text" version of #2 and upload it to the commons. You said it will shrink down on its own or do I need to shrink it? I sure wish somebody else would comment (it would make this feel more like a concensus). I asked the original artist (who drew both logos actually) and he hasn't commented yet. Oh well, we'll be bold and if someone doesn't like it, they'll change it back. TheLimbicOne 15:29, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I found another and all I can say about it is WOW (the spanish version is still WOW)! TheLimbicOne 15:57, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Template Improvement[edit]

Wikispecies has information related to: New Look

This infobox would have a better appearance if the article name was on the same line as "related to:" and the text was vertically centered.

Source Code:

Alternative format / new template - an inline version?[edit]

I could create a new template, but it might be better as an option on this one:

I would like to suggest an inline version for Wikispecies interlinking. See Exposed riverine sediments#ERS habitat for how it might look in an article.

Possible code might be:

{{#if:{}<!-- check for style version

Inline style version -->
|<small>See also Special:Search/PAGENAME}}}|{{{2|{}}}} in Wikispecies</small>.<!--

Infobox style version -->
|<div class="infobox sisterproject">
<div style="margin-left: 60px;">Wikispecies has information related to:
<div style="margin-left: 10px;">Special:Search/PAGENAME}}}|{{{2|{}}}}</div>
</div>
</div>
}}<!-- end of style versioning -->

editprotected

See above for description of proposed change - editprotected to try to get some comment / response. Ronnam (talk) 03:32, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, the editprotected template is not appropriate until you already have consensus for the update. I would very strongly recommend that the inline style be switched by a named parameter, meaning {{#ifeq:{{lc:{}}}|yes| rather than {{#if:{}. In terms of style, I'd suggest something like:

{{#ifeq:{{lc:{}}}|yes|<!-- check for style version

Inline style version -->
|}|{{{2|{}}}}
desc none
}}<!--

Infobox style version -->
|<div class="infobox sisterproject">
<div style="margin-left: 60px;">Wikispecies has information related to:
<div style="margin-left: 10px;">Special:Search/PAGENAME}}}|{{{2|{}}}}</div>
</div>
</div>
}}<!-- end of style versioning -->

Which produces:

Blah blah blah lorem ipsum random comment about frog.

Blah blah blah more text

Thoughts? I can't work out how to get rid of the linebreak, which is a fairly big problem ATM, but I'm sure it can be fixed. Happymelon 09:15, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Happy-melon for getting back to me.
editprotected tag use - yer I sort of figured that, but after three weeks with not even a nibble, I thought I should do something to get some comment to get concensus. Is there another way? How long do I wait before re 'editprotected' tagging? Is no comment at all concensus?
I tried several options to get the Wikispecies logo in the rendering but none looked elegant. The line break I think is not resolvable, because the 'imagemap' tagging generates 'div' tags around the image stuff, and 'div' tags always produce a line/paragraph break when expressed by a browser? There needs to be an option on the 'imagemap' tag to generate 'span' tags instead?
My preferered code would now look more like:
{{#ifeq: {{lc:{}}} | inline <!-- check for style

Inline style -->
|<small>See also Special:Search/PAGENAME}}}|{{{2|{}}}} in Wikispecies</small>.<!--

Infobox style -->
|<div class="infobox sisterproject">
<div style="margin-left: 60px;">Wikispecies has information related to:
<div style="margin-left: 10px;">Special:Search/PAGENAME}}}|{{{2|{}}}}</div>
</div>
</div>
}}<!-- end of style check -->

Clickable image[edit]

editprotected
Please make it so when the Wikispecies logo is clicked, instead of going to the image description page, it goes to the corresponding Wikispecies page. It can be done as follows (you can just copy paste this code):
<div class="infobox sisterproject"><div align="left" style="float:left"></div><div style="margin-left: 60px;">Wikispecies has information related to:<div style="margin-left: 10px;"> Special:Search/PAGENAME}}}|{{{2|{}}}} </div></div></div>
which produces:

Wikispecies has information related to:
Wikispecies

WikispeciesCompact[edit]

I have created template WikispeciesCompact, inspired from Commons:Template:WikispeciesCompact, which creates a similar link, inline and inside a small non-floating box. It could be used where the right-floating box of Wikispecies is too large or clashes with other boxes in an article.

Example:

 • First list item

WikispeciesCompact

 • Third list item

Edit request on 31 December 2012[edit]

Please apply these two edits which replace sec link auto with plain interwiki links; The former is not necessary any more. These changes are not necessary, but templates in English Wikipedia are copied often to other languages.

The latter does not take any parameter, so it must be clear that the edit is correct. (The changed part is the link to meta, printed "Complete list of Wikipedias".) For the former, let me place three test cases here: Wikispecies, foo, and foo

Thank you very much beforehand. --Ahora (talk) 08:44, 31 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Is this template superfluous in many cases?[edit]

Am I the only person who thinks this template superfluous, when the link to Wikispecies is already present in the Taxonbar? The taxonbar is usually directly below it, and as far as I can tell, is pretty much universal. Seems like overkill.

Apologies if I am missing something obvious here. Darorcilmir (talk) 21:59, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 31 January 2021[edit]

Add a period to the end of the template to make it consistent with similar templates, like Template:Commons, Template:Commons category. Generally, templates that form a full sentence end with a period (lack of one here seems to be a remnant from the last edit request). — Goszei (talk) 07:09, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Suggest Wikidata integration[edit]

At present this template assumes the WikiSpecies entry is named the same as the page. I suggest drawing from the Wikidata item in case that's not correct, to avoid this: Talk:Journal of Invertebrate Pathology#WikiSpecies page. Invasive Spices (talk) 18:38, 17 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
