Redirects[edit]

Two points:

  • All that are needed are one or two shortcuts unless more existing shortcuts are found. The procedure is, if one wants to include new shortcuts, they should first be created and only then they are added to the documentation page. Otherwise, they will show as red links and may confuse other contributors.
  • There are good reasons to show all existing redirects in the Redirects section. They are then available for use by anyone who may want to use them. Also, if an administrator does not want so many redirects and wants to delete some of them, they have a list to use for that work. – PAINE ELLSWORTH CLIMAX! 18:38, 28 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Respectfully, what the heck is all this?[edit]

Since when did redirects become so complicated? I've always just redirected things indiscriminately. Does this mean that mainspace articles should all reside in the longest or best phonetically sounding version of their name, not necessarily the most popular or common one. See WP:Categorizing redirects for an overview - admittedly, the consensus is imperfect on whether redirect categorization is worth doing, but no one wants to get rid of it either. (One special case: Our software is currently configured to add {{R from move}} automatically to redirects created by moves.)
{{R from short name}} also exists; there is not a definite preference for either "short" or "long" names. Generally, WP:Article titles and its associated subpages should be considered more authoritative than the wording of any particular redirect template, but feel free to discuss any discrepancies on the relevant talk pages. --SoledadKabocha (talk) 06:20, 23 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Template-protected edit request on 31 December 2017[edit]

Please change "name of a person, organization, legislative act, etc" to "title of the target article" or "topic's name". No need to go into details, and it primes the reader to expect an article from one of the example article types. Paradoctor (talk) 17:06, 31 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Template:R from long nameTemplate:R from longer title – Making the proposed target the main template would better match the bolded text of the template itself ("From a longer title:") helping make our redirect system make more sense. Our redirect and category naming schemes are tangled messes that are confusing to new users. Each time we make a template's name more closely and accurately match what it does or says we help unknot that mess. This is one minor step in the right direction whose drawbacks (page history complication) are worth the benefit to editors. Jason Quinn (talk) 05:28, 27 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You mean changing "From a longer title:" to "From a longer name:"? Yeah, I guess that's the best solution too. Jason Quinn (talk) 07:53, 28 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
