Upton Sinclair[edit]

I wanted to correct the reference cite error for Upton Sinclair relating to the title of the article the prior editor was using as a reference. Unfortunately I was not able to locate the information. Please correct if you find the information available.--BuzyBody (talk) 17:14, 29 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Gloria Swanson[edit]

NB- Actual documents in the posession of the Englewood Library rare books collection, inclue the diary of Countess Ponyatowsky, who was, with her husband the original builder and owner of this house, shows that Swanson could never have lived there. They owned the house until 1936, and the afffair with Senator Joe Kennedy ws over by 1930. Also a search of the tax records in Hackensack, by another member of the BoD of the Englewood Historical Society, showed no evidence that she ever lived there. The name Gloria means "glory" and crest refers to the location of the house on the east hill of Englewood, not to the actress. The article in the Record and the other article are talking about another house, owned by Eddie Murphy who DID live in Englewood, and not far from the Gloria Crest mansion. But their mention is mere puffery and not based on any facts whatsoever.

Excerpted from the official website of the Englewood Historical Society - trying to combat this urban legend. Gloria May Josephine Swanson NEVER lived in Englewood. It's an urban myth. Despite all the rumours and stories about an alleged tryst with Sen Joseph Kennedy at the home on Woodland St., built by Count Poniatowski in 1923. A diary of "Countess Ponyatowsky" published in limited edition, a copy of which is in the possession of the Englewood Public LIbrary rare manuscripts office, and compiled by Robert Hodges, Jr. July 28, 1985 contains a copy of a certified letter, dated July 25, 1985, addressed to Ms. Dolores Daly, daughter of Gloria Swanson, in which she answers questions posed by Hodges about her famous mother's life. In this document she categorically denies that her mother ever lived in Englewood, or ever owned property here. [1] This is all verified by research done at the City of Hackensack (Bergen County Seat), in the property documents office. The following was discovered:

Facts[edit]

  1. . Count Stefan Poniatowsky owned the house, which he had built in 1926, and lived there with his wife Edith Von Stohn Ponyatowsky [2] until 1936
  2. . Swanson and Joseph Kennedy's affair ended in 1930
  3. . Count Poniatowsky sold it to Lincoln national bank in 1936 (which might have had a relationship with Kennedy, but again, well after the rumoured trysts.)
  4. . it was sold again in 1940 and 1961, and was bought in 1962 by a NJ corp called Gloria Crest Estates.
