A story of how Mangal, a dedicated homemaker, navigates through her troubled marriage and at the same time is determined to find the perfect groom for her cousin, Lakshmi, who will treat her with respect.

Plot

[edit]

Mangal, a 35-year-old uneducated woman but an outstanding homemaker lives with her husband, their two children and her in-laws. While Lakshmi, her cousin, a 22-year-old orphan lives with Mangal's parents and works as a tailor for her family's bread and butter. Mangal's husband Adit is a highly educated, 40-year-old, handsome and irascible man who works as a senior manager in a company. He always expresses his hatred for Mangal and insults her for being orthodox, uneducated and for her simple dress up. Mangal is not happy with the way Adit treats her but she never expresses it. She still makes efforts to impress him. Unlike Adit, his parents and his son, Akshat always appreciate Mangal for her efforts, talents and contributions.

Adit's mother Kusum defends Mangal whenever Adit berates her. Lakshmi on the other hand is described as kind, hardworking and gleeful.  She is a gifted singer and songwriter but she never got the chance to express her talent. Lakshmi is shown to be socially smart, knowing the English language and how to use technology, unlike Mangal who doesn't know english nor is good with technology due to which she is often insulted by Adit. Lakshmi is ill-treated by Mangal's mother Shanti and sister Lipika but loved by Mangal and Mangal's father Bhushan. Mangal took Lakshmi under her wing and cared for her and mentored her like her own daughter after Lakshmi's parents passed away. In episode 2, Mangal rejects Nitin, a billionaire for Lakshmi because he was married twice . Nitin insults Lakshmi and says that no one will marry her because of being 10th pass but Mangal consoles Lakshmi. Adit snaps at Mangal for the drama with Nitin and expresses his difficulty in living with the marriage since past 15 years and says that Lakshmi might ruin a man's life just like Mangal ruined his since Lakshmi is very much like Mangal. Kusum reprimands him and tells him that she and Mangal will find a perfect suitor for Lakshmi who treats her with respect. Kusum's younger sister Gayatri lives in a mansion with her cunning sister-in-law, Sanjana and son Kartik. Kartik is a handsome, rich and successful popular singer who unlike Adit is good-natured, caring, loving and gleetful. Kartik respects and admires Mangal very much like Kusum and Akshat. Gayatri's husband Umesh and their daughter Nidhi went to America for Nidhi's studies. Gayatri is always insecure and possessive about her son because of the curse given to her by her mother-in-law that one day Kartik will be separated from her and she will die alone and yearning for her son. Sanjana hated Gayatri for deliberately separating her mother and Umesh which was the reason why Sanjana's mother cursed Gayatri. Sanjana always plots against Gayatri to avenge her mother. Kartik had been in a relationship with Jiya, a dancer for the past two years but never disclosed it to anyone. But Gayatri is aware of their relationship unbeknownst to Kartik. She hates Jiya for her dress-up and over possessiveness for Kartik making her fear ther mother-in-law's curse to come true.  Adit has a secret extramarital affair with Saumya, a spinster who works at his office. Saumya is jealous of Mangal and plots against her to separate her from Adit. Adit who is unaware of her deeds always defends her whenever Kusum or Shanti berate her.

One day Kusum hears Saumya's phone call to Adit and gets infuriated. She confronts Saumya and warns her to stay away from Adit but is still unaware of their affair. Kusum taunts Saumya for not knowing household chores and indirectly berates her whenever she meets Saumya. Lakshmi meets Kartik for the first time when he saves her from a thief who stole her purse. Lakshmi goes to participate in a kavita competition and her duputta falls on Kartik's banner. Kartik decides to help her and they share a moment which becomes viral on social media spreading rumors about them which makes Jiya jealous. Jiya always persuades Kartik to disclose their relationship to Gayatri but Kartik fears Gayatri's reaction to the news and asks her to give him some time. During the Holi celebration, Jiya spikes Kartik's drink with bhang to make him disclose their relationship due to which she gets rebuked by Gayatri and Kusum. Kartik in intoxication says "I love you" to Lakshmi shocking Jiya but Lakshmi or anyone else except Jiya does not hear him. An acquaintance of Gayatri proposes Lakshmi's hand in marriage for her son Rohan to Mangal but the proposal fails after Nitin sends fake videos of himself and Lakshmi to Rohan on the day of their bariksha rasam. Jiya tries to commit suicide because of Gayatri not forgiving her after which Kartik warns Gayatri that he would have died if something happened to her which makes Gayatri agree to their relationship. Gayatri lies to Jiya about Kartiks's horoscope that he might die if he gets married to her at the particular time which makes Jiya break off their engagement shocking Kartik. Kusum and Gayatri decide to get Lakshmi and Kartik married and hide Kartik's relationship with Jiya from Mangal and Lakshmi. Umesh and Nidhi return to their home. Nidhi dislikes Lakshmi for coming from a poor family and not being modern and prefers Jiya over her. She assists Sanjana in her schemes to create drama. Kartik does not want to marry Lakshmi because of being in live with Jiya and decides to tell Lakshmi his true feelings through a letter but Gayatri replaces that letter with a love letter. Kartik is determined to make Jiya reveal the truth behind breaking up with him and decides to take Lakshmi's help to make her jealous and get back with her. Lakshmi who is unaware of Kartik's original letter falls in love with him. After Lakshmi tells everyone about the love letter, Kartik is shocked and feels betrayed by her. He decides to run away on the day of marriage but when he crosses paths with Lakshmi and sees the letter she received, he reveals to her the truth about the original letter which devastates her. Lakshmi stops Kartik from running away and promises him that she will stop their marriage by telling everything to Mangal. Adit who had heard their conversation warns Lakshmi that he will divorce Mangal if she reveals the truth. He wanted Kartik and Lakshmi to get married because he was jealous of Kartik for being successful and appreciated by the family members so he wanted Kartik to suffer the same fate of a loveless marriage with an unmodern woman just like him. Lakshmi is forced to marry Kartik to save Mangal's marriage which makes Kartik feel betrayed by her. Kartik is frustrated with Lakshmi and rebukes her but later understands her and apologizes to her after Lakshmi tells him that Mangal would have been devastated on learning the truth and being forced to stop the marriage . The two decide to fulfil the duties of their marriage by staying friends for the rest of their lives. Saumya tries to get close to Mangal's daughter Ishana to separate her and Mangal. She also asks Adit to marry her after she is given an ultimatum to get married in 20 days by her parents. Kusum decides to get Adit and Mangal remarried on their 15th anniversary to improve the couple's relationship after Adit abandoned Mangal on the street without telling anyone after the Mangal became responsible for Adit getting jailed. Gayatri begins to envy Lakshmi's growing closeness to Kartik. Sanjana plots against Lakshmi to make Lakshmi disappoint Gayatri but Kartik always defends and supports Lakshmi over Gayatri making the latter insecure. Unlike Adit, Kartik treats Lakshmi with respect and cares for her which is what Mangal had always wanted for Lakshmi. After Adit refuses to marry Saumya , the latter decides to marry Manan , Adit's childhood friend which makes Adit jealous and Saumya uses that to her benefit to make Adit leave Mangal for her.
