Das Porträt zeigt den Konstanzer Patrizier Ulrich Ehinger mit einer Bisamapfel-Uhr in der linken Hand. Der angesehene Handelsmann hatte Kontakte zu den Fuggern und sogar zum Kaiser. Wie Ehinger ließen sich nach 1530 Angehörige gesellschaftlicher und wirtschaftlicher Eliten mit solchen modernen Kleinuhren abbilden. Als technische Statussymbole demonstrierten sie die Stellung und den Erfolg des Porträtierten.
