English: Symbiogenesis tree of life diagram by Konstantin Mereschkowski (1855–1921), showing the origin of complex life-forms by two episodes of incorporation of symbiotic bacteria, 1905. The first symbiosis generated the nucleus. The second symbiosis generated chloroplasts. Mitochondria were not included.
