Summary

Description
English: During a gladitatorial show in the Pompeii amphitheater in 59CE, a fight broke out between visiting Nucerians and Pompeiians, leading to numerous deaths and injuries. The Nucerians took their complaints to the capital, and the Roman Senate barred Pompeii from holding games for 10 years, however after the earthquake of 62 CE, the amphitheater was repaired and games were probably allowed to resume. From the House of Actius Anicetus, Pompeii (I, 3.23). This episode in Pompeii's history is related by the historian Tacitus (Annals XIV.17).

Pompeii and Nuceria had been rivals for many years, after being on different sides in the Social Wars a century and a half earlier. Just two years before the riot, Nero awarded land in neighboring Nuceria to veterans, which may have been on land disputed by Pompeii, possibly inflaming old tensions.

Once part of a much larger fresco, there were depictions of gladiator pairs on either side of this scene, meaning that the owner of the house - Actius Anicetus - may have been a freed gladiator and slave.
