Professor Madhab Chandra Bora was an Indian computer scientist. He was known for his academic contributions and oratory skills. He was the founder professor of the Department of Computer Science in Jorhat Engineering College.

Early life and Education[edit]

At High School

Madhab Chandra Bora was born to a great teacher (Late) Hemkanta Bora and a caring and loving mother (Late) Jayanti Bora, began his journey of mortality on the 24th December 1947 in a small “Kolongporiya” village called Diphalu. He had completed his High school securing the 10th position in Assam from Nagaon Government Boys’ Higher Secondary School.

He subsequently secured first class second  position in BE Mechanical from Assam Engineering College Assam Engineering college in 1969.

He obtained his Master's degree in Systems Management from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bankok in the year 1972.

He completed his Ph. D degree from Indian institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1983. He was the first recipient of the Ph.D degree in the field of System Dynamics for research work carried out in India on this subject. His software package 'DYMOSIM' [1] paved the way for research work in the field of System Dynamics in India.

Professional Life[edit]

Professor Madhab Chandra Bora served the two State Government Engineering Colleges in Assam in various capacities during the period 1969 to 1996.

He started his career in Mechanical Engineering department of Assam Engineering College in 1969.

He moved to Jorhat in the year 1982 to join Jorhat Engineering College. He was the Founder Professor to initiate the Department of Computer Engineering and Application at Jorhat Engineering College in 1988.[2]

Professor Bora has also served as a Senior Professor of Management at Tezpur University from the year 1996 to 2004. His contribution was very eminent in the establishment of the Department of Business Administration in Tezpur University. He was the first Dean of School of Management Sciences, Tezpur University. He also served the University in the capacity of Dean of Administration for more than two years[3]. He was also involved with the Centre for Disaster Management at Tezpur University for more than two years. Apart from guiding Ph.D. scholars, Professor Bora had authored a book for PG level. In a later stage Professor Bora inspired the Department to start the PG programme in Tourism Management and very enthusiastically started learning and teaching few papers in the course.

Professor Bora had crowned membership of different professional, academic and decision making bodies. He was related to almost all the educational institutes of the state as the member of the decision-making bodies. He had been the first court member of Assam University, member of the Planning and Academic Committee, Tezpur University; member of the Academic Council of Dibrugarh University; member of the Eastern Regional Advisory Committee of IDBI, member of the Academic Council, Assam Agricultural University, Member of the Board of Management of this University to name a few.

Professor Bora was the Fellow of Institute of Engineers of India [4], Life member of the Computer Society of India [5], Indian Society of Technical Education and the System Dynamics Society of India. In fact, Bora Sir was the founder Vice President of the System Dynamics Society of India.

He published many articles in International and National journals of repute.

His pioneering work in the form of a book “Introduction to System Dynamics” co-authored with PKJ Mohapatra of IIT Kharagpur has been treated as the pathfinder in the field.

Professor Bora had also guided six Ph. D. scholars successfully.

Personal Life[edit]

Family

Professor Madhab Chandra Bora Prof Bora got married to renowned singer Mrs. Durgamayee Bora. Together, they were blessed with two sons, Bhaskarjyoti  Bora and Deepankar Bora. Both the sons are Engineers and well settled now at Bangalore. Mrs. Durgamayee Bora retired a as a teacher and pursuing her singing career in her own modest way.

Extracurricular Activities[edit]

Professor Madhab Chandra Bora was a versatile person. He was admired for his ability to connect to the audience from various backgrounds with his exceptional public speaking. Be it a lecture to the villagers on forest conservation or in front of a learned gathering assembled for water conservation; he would have mesmerized one and all each time and every time. He also had a passion for theater, having written, directed, and performed in numerous plays.

Legacy[edit]

A memorial gate stands proudly at Jorhat Engineering College, Assam, dedicated to the legacy of Dr. Madhab Chandra Bora.[6]

Each year, Tezpur University hosts an annual quiz in remembrance of Professor Bora[7]
