I've noticed links to ifood.tv popping up here and there. In most cases, by spot checking, I found the links added by IP users mapping to India. (Look for 122. IPs). I'm not entirely convinced that this is spam ... well ... it's spam, but it's borderline useful content as opposed to merely being a link aggregator or trying to push a commercial product. Maybe I'll be more dogmatic tomorrow, but I thought I would post it here first to see if anyone has a strong opinion one way or the other on removing the links. --B 02:33, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Let's monitor how it gets used. --Dirk Beetstra T C 13:00, 10 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Dirk - did this get monitored? There doesn't seem to be a COIBot report, but a link was added on October 24 2007 ([1]). -- SiobhanHansa 16:18, 28 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Curious, the bot missed that one. Maybe the bot was down at the moment...

Articles

This editor continues to re-add a link to this organization's web site, offering a postmodern critique of western society in many, many articles that don't seem to require this addition. For example, International Standard Book Number. For an example of the critique offered see http:// pygmalionbooks.org/isbn.php. Their publishing company objects to the use of the ISBN because it 'symbolically legitimates commercial record keeping.' This editor keeps re-adding the link to articles after they've been removed. I would welcome some advice. There have been 28 edits since 17 December. One possibility is to request a block of this IP as a spam-only account, but I haven't tried that lately so I am not sure of the requirements. The editor has received a final warning on their Talk page. EdJohnston (talk) 15:20, 18 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"Spammy" at the very least. I've cleared the straightforward links. I'd be tempted with a block if they take the same sort of actions again? Cheers --Herby talk thyme 15:28, 18 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with the call for a block if this behavior continues. The individual or individuals reponsible have made no attempt to offer a justification for the links he or they have added. ---RepublicanJacobiteThe'FortyFive' 18:04, 18 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand. Is the ISBN outside of criticism? What exactly is "postmodern" about their criticism of the ISBN? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.200.228.169 (talk) 06:16, 19 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

205.200.244.98 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) resumed work today, putting back the link to pygmalionbooks.org at Citizenship, Arthur (magazine) and Situationist International. I thought of asking for semi-protection, but since so many articles are being targeted, blacklisting may be more appropriate. This is ongoing quirky commentary that constantly inserts links to a self-published web site. The original spammer uses a computer on the network of a school district in Manitoba, Canada. The company seems to issue pamphlets that are not available in the normal way through book stores; they appear to be a sort of collective vanity press. Their postings on Wikipedia are promoting the opinions of their self-published site rather than selling books. EdJohnston (talk) 00:21, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'd be inclined to consider the local BL at this point, any objections? --Hu12 (talk) 01:42, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you talking about me in the third person? It's a little creepy to be honest. My previous question seems to have gone ignored here. I will try again. Here are some objections: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Freshacconci#Avant-garde_artists I reject the accusation that anything I have been doing is vandalism, and thus far I am not convinced that this rather uncritical mod coalition has been unable to prove otherwise. For each instance where I have been accused of spam, I would like to request a specific run down of why what I posted was spam. Otherwise, your mass censorship would seem to remain entirely unfounded. I have not seen a single good reason provided by any of you yet, in fact. You seem to be unaware of the relevance and notability of this group, which I can attempt to explain if you'd like. However, since you have been extraordinarily uncritical up until now, I would rather you attempt to research the matter on your own first, as I am unconvinced that you're very aware of what you're doing when you make the deletions. I think you should actually have to research the subject a little before you can consider yourself qualified to judge things like notability. There is no evidence that any of you have yet. I have seen EdJohnston make a couple attempts to interpret the group from his somewhat biased standpoint (see below) but both of them are very lacking and miss entirely the substance of what this group really is. To stop at the label of 'vanity press' shows a strong misunderstanding of this group and the associations it has achieved so far. I would suggest a further reading to avoid future bad misinterpretations. Hopefully my objections will not go ignored this time.205.200.244.98 (talk) 22:12, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, there has been another development. I would like to make known the strong personal bias of EdJohnston as pointed out thoroughly in Hu12's message below. 205.200.244.98 (talk) 05:03, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Furthermore, I'd like to reiterate something mentioned on by Herby on 19:21, 18 December. He mentioned that after doing a clean up, some of the things he removed "seemed to have some valid content" but that he "didn't have the time to deal with" it. In the face of wiping out Pygmalion Books en bloc, I think this is a key point here and further adds to my suggestion for the mods in question to do deeper research on this group before engaging in any hasty future actions. For a starting hint, I notice that Wikipedia describes itself as "a free content encyclopedia project written collaboratively by volunteers." It should be known that this is one of the foremost purposes of Pygmalion Books as well. They are publishers and distributors of libre knowledge. As EdJohnston has already mentioned, they do not sell their books. To my knowledge they are the first significant mass organized endeavor of their kind to emerge in recent years (i.e. the first notable, concerted, widespread volunteer-based attempt to distribute tangible books for free). I am unaware of any other large publishing group that does anything like this. Along with their explicit collaborations with the very well known NOT BORED! journal and the notable Libre Society, this would only seem to add to their notability. 205.200.244.98 (talk) 23:59, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:No Personal Attacks and Wikipedia:Harassment apply to any kind of attack or harassment in any context. [pygmalionbooks.org/silence.php] & [pygmalionbooks.org/edjohnston/User EdJohnston.htm], Wikipedia:Harassment#Off-wiki_harassment Harassment of other Wikipedians through the use of external links is considered equivalent to the posting of personal attacks on Wikipedia...off-wiki harassment can be grounds for blocking, and in extreme cases, banning. see also WP:NPA#Off-wiki_personal_attacks. We need no longer believe that these individuals on-wiki actions in adding these sites was in good faith. Linking to off-site harassment, attacks, or privacy violations against Wikipedians for the purpose of attacking another Wikipedian is never acceptable. Blacklisting has been implemented, per spamming evidence above. I would propose that this off-site trolling and harassment lead to a posible block for disruption.--Hu12 (talk) 02:31, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I should make it clear that I have no relation to the Pygmalion Books bulletin that you cite as harassment. I only linked to it because it displays the personal bias of EdJohnston as it pertains to this case. I am not making a personal attack by linking to it. I only wanted to display relevant information pertaining to this matter for purposes of a more concise and neutral analysis. In good faith, and to clear things up, I will remove the link I posted to the bulletin in question (you can keep your re-posts of the links up as evidence, fine by me). Instead, I welcome you to observe the user EdJohnston's profile page, which displays evidence of his strong personal bias in this case. Can you please address this bias? I would also appreciate your good faith in addressing the other arguments I've made, which have gone ignored thus far. 205.200.244.98 (talk) 05:06, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I want to point something else out, because I do not understand the nature of the 'blacklist' that Hu12 is mentioning. In "DIGITAL MAOISM: The Hazards of the New Online Collectivism", Jaron Lanier uses a lot of insulting language against the processes of Wikipedia. In fact, I did a count. He uses the word "stupid" 11 times and "idiot" 3 times to describe varying aspects of Wikipedia. I am not at all saying that I agree with him here. I'm only pointing out that it's unlikely that Jaron Lanier has been blacklisted from Wikipedia as a result of writing this highly insulting piece. With this in mind, I don't understand why I am being blacklisted for the actions of Pygmalion Books. I didn't write the bulletin that revealed EdJohnston's bias, I have nothing to do with it. I only pointed it out. Am I being blacklisted for the actions of Pygmalion Books? Or are they being blacklisted for being critical of a lack of neutrality in Wikipedia moderation? I don't understand what is going on here!? 205.200.244.98 (talk) 05:36, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your contributions as with all the related IP's/account from Winnipeg (obviously the same person), consist entirely of promoting Pygmalion Books (based in Winnipeg, Canada). I find it quite improbable for someone not related to pygmalionbooks.org could find and present those harassing links, being they are so new. "..foremost purposes of Pygmalion Books...they are the first significant mass organized endeavor of their kind to emerge in recent years..."[4]. It is quite evident that the account and IP's are only contributing to Wikipedia in order to promote Pygmalion Books. Few people will edit tendentiously or argue ad nauseum topics in which they have no connection. The big picture clearly shows someone who is using Wikipedia to promote their own interests. --Hu12 (talk) 06:00, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
With Hu12 here. It is not the content of the links that interest me by the time it has got to this stage. Links to this site are repeatedly added despite the obvious community disapproval. Your rationale for placing the links becomes quite secondary to the behaviour when you so ignore the wishes of others. I endorse the blacklisting --Herby talk thyme 10:22, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

spam.dromoz.com

This appears to be cross-wiki. There are ~543 links, primarily on en.wp & ms.wp, with a few scattered elsewhere.

I'm not sure if this is the ID that originally added them, but it appears the links were removed by an IP & he's gone and reverted/undone all of the removals.

This user has been blocked by John Reaves, and the domain is now locally blacklisted, he'd been spamming these links for months.. --Versageek 08:20, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There are still some 500+ links to this domain on en.wp, in about 250 articles. Before I started to remove them, I posted a notice on WikiProject Malaysia and it would appear that at least one person thinks the site is useful. It is, however, the same situation we've seen recently on some other domains - "spamming" (the undesirable on-wiki activity) doesn't always involve "low content, advertisement-ridden sites". --Versageek 23:56, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The nature of this is disturbing, I suspect this will be a reoccuring campaign. perhaps a local Blacklisting would be appropriate?--Hu12 (talk) 00:16, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The other thing which concerns me about this site is that the content (and indeed the whole concept of the project).. consists of scanned copies of street maps (most of which are very likely copyvio's, as street maps tend to be under copyright). --Versageek 15:13, 22 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Long term sneaky spamming of spam.searchindia.com

Spammers - range 1
Range 2

This is a partial list of spammers, there's still 16 mainspace links to be cleaned up (I need some sleep).

The two distinct ranges and the link consistently being added to the top despite {{NoMoreLinks}} gives this away as spam. Blacklisting requested. MER-C 13:35, 27 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

megadry.com

Note: I have unarchived this section because they have become active again - if this was not the right thing to do then please snip the old stuff Matt Beard (talk) 13:00, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have spotted some spamming activity on behalf of megadry.com where user Whynotthestars has been adding links to this site, as has Hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis has also removed a link to a non profit organisation that works in the same field.

On the verge of BL here, probably should go on if they are still at it --Herby talk thyme 16:45, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The link is, for as far as the bots have picked it up, only be used by the above accounts, and by an IP:
--Dirk Beetstra T C 17:01, 4 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The following IP address also seems to be involved:
--Matt Beard (talk) 11:06, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
User Whynotthestars is still acting in a way that I believe is unhelpful. On 19:21, 4 December 2007 he returned to the Sleep_hyperhidrosis page and again removed a link to a non-profit organisation that is dedicated to this field. I think this may be a case of trying to reduce exposure of alternative sites to the one that he has been spamming. He earlier replaced the link to this non-profit with a spam-link to megadry and this action was regarded by Voyagerfan5761 as vandalism.
--Matt Beard (talk) 10:33, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The following IP address has been active putting megadry.com links back in:
--Matt Beard (talk) 13:00, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to request this on the blacklist I'll be happy to do it - I was in two minds last time as they seem to have stopped but as they have come back.... Thanks for catching it, cheers --Herby talk thyme 13:06, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think that is worth doing - Voyagerfan5761 has also had some run-ins with this too.
Maybe 64.34.168.70 needs to be investigated a little as there seems to be a bit of rubbish coming from that address if you look at it's talk page!
--Matt Beard (talk) 17:56, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like a proxy to me but I can't prove it, off to list anyway, cheers --Herby talk thyme 18:00, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That IP (64.34.168.70) traceroutes to raynersoftware.com which looks like a legit outfit. My port scan so far finds ports 22, 25, 53, 80 and 143 open -- possible open proxy or zombie PC. Can someone block (I'm on the run to get on the road.) --A. B. (talk) 18:31, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

User:Transitguru appears to have only joined Widipedia in order to generate spam about his own website [11]. He is not very active, restricting himself to a limited number of travel related sites, but it has all been spam;

He has repeatedly reverted the Transit article;

Despite being reverted by many different editors and requests to discuss first;

there is no communication from this individual. Since he will not communicate and produces nothing useful for Wikipedia, I suggest that some administrator blocks him and we can all stop wasting our time with him.
