Requested moves is the place to request and vote on article moves that are not straightforward, or that require the assistance of Wikipedia administrators. Normally, logged in users can do uncontroversial moves themselves using the [move] tab found at the top of every page (see Help:Moving a page for more information). However, sometimes this does not work because the target is already occupied (usually in the form of a redirect with a page history). In other situations a move may be controversial and will require discussion to reach a consensus.

Approval voting is encouraged for page moves requested on this page. Requested moves may be implemented if there is a Wikipedia community consensus (generally 60% or more) supporting the moving of an article after five (5) days under discussion on the talk page of the article to be moved, or earlier at the discretion of an administrator. The time for discussion may be extended if a consensus has not emerged.

What requested moves is not for

Before you begin note that requested moves is only for moving articles and sometimes templates. It is not the place for the following:

Unobstructed, uncontroversial moves
Moves of this nature can be accomplished by any logged in user using the [move] tab located at the top of every page. See Help:Moving a page.
Category move requests
To rename a category, list it at categories for deletion (yes, deletion).
Image move requests
To rename an image, reupload the image with the name you want, change the relevant links to reflect the new name, then list the old image at images and media for deletion.
Merge requests
To merge two articles, make a request at proposed mergers or be bold and do it yourself.
Cut and paste move fix requests
To request page histories to be merged, list them at cut and paste move repairs.

Steps for requesting a page move

In the following, replace PageName with the name of the page to be moved; NewName with your proposed name; and reason for move with some text explaining your proposal.

Step 1:  Add the request to the list on this page

a.  To aid the administrators, add a line with the day's date on it directly under the heading of the Current discussions subsection, if it has not already been added for this day.

The line should look like:
===[[Day# Month]] [[Year]]===

Using today's date as an example: ===[[15 June]] [[2024]]===

b.  To enter a request for a single page to be moved to a new name, add the following two lines at the top of the section under the date line (the second line consists of four hyphens) :

* [[PageName]] → '''[[NewName]]''' — reason for move — [[Talk:PageName]] — ~~~~
----

A handy way to do this is to write the following on an empty line:
{{subst:WP:RM|PageName|NewName|reason for move}}
which will include all the necessary formatting. Don't forget the "subst:" at the beginning!

c.  Include the page's name in your edit summary. Save this page.

Step 2:  Add the move template to talk page

Enter the following text at the top of the talk page of the page you want moved:

{{move|NewName}}

If you think a page should be moved, but don't yet know what name it should be given, you can use {{moveoptions}} instead to indicate that there are several options to discuss.

Step 3:  Create a place for discussion

If one does not already exist, create a section on the talk page of the page you want moved for discussion. This can take any form that is reasonable for administrators to follow, but copying the following is suggested. The reason for move should be copied from the entry on the WP:RM page:

==Requested move==
PageName → NewName – {reason for move with signature} copied from the entry on the [[WP:RM]] page
===Survey===
:''Add *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''' followed by an optional one-sentence explanation, then sign your opinion with ''<nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>

===Discussion===
:''Add any additional comments''

If you are proposing that multiple closely related pages should all be moved for the same reason (see #Multiple page moves), it may be advisable to create this discussion on only a single talk page and provide links from the other talk pages to this centralized discussion.

Please include "move proposal" or similar in the edit summary and don't mark it as minor. Consider checking the "Watch this page" box to follow the page in your watchlist. Save the page.

What to do on the article page

If the move you are suggesting is uncontroversial – for example, it is correcting spelling or capitalisation – then update the article's text to reflect the article's new title. For example, if the article were at Blah Blah, but should be at Blah blah, then if the opening sentence began "Blah Blah is a...", you would update it to "Blah blah is a...".

Current proposals

Please list new proposals at the top of today's section (June 15) in the format described above. Actual discussions should take place on the listed talk page, not here.

  • CCM (disambiguation)CCMRationale: the latter was changed to a redirect to Contemporary Christian music in January, but there are many things called CCM, Christian music doesn't seem to be overwhelmingly more popular than the rest, and the current setup is suboptimal. There's no discussion about this anywhere, but it doesn't seem particularly controversial. --jacobolus (t) 13:51, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Alien (popular culture)Extraterrestrial life in cultureRationale: This is a move back request, which can't be done manually as history exists. Reasoning: Extraterrestrial, not Alien, is the category name; various other pages conform to ET ahead of alien; literally hundreds of pages have been dabbed to specifically avoid the problem of using alien. Alien itself is a disambig and it doesn't make sense to have an "in culture" page for a disambig page. I'm hoping this can be speedied. I asked an admin to undo the move which was made two days but it was suggested I bring it here. … Please share your opinion at Talk:Alien (popular culture). • Cantabria (community in Spain)CantabriaRationale: The article has been moved to the current location for disambiguation purposes, but is now just a redirect. The eventual disambiguation that once sparked the move has been included as a disambiguation header. There seem to be no reason why the article should not be returned to its original location. … Please share your opinion at Talk:Cantabria (community in Spain). • A number of States of Venezuela:
Anzoátegui (state)Anzoátegui
Apure StateApure
Falcón (state)Falcón
Guárico (state)Guárico
Monagas StateMonagas
Táchira (state)Táchira
Vargas (state)Vargas
Yaracuy (state)Yaracuy
Rationale: The naming of the different States of Venezuela suffers from a lack of standardization, alternately the naming currently it follows at least two or three different modes of attempted standardization. This renaming will reduce disparity and place articles at locations where they are most likely to be found, and where disambiguation can be achieved by a disambiguation header. … Please share your opinion at Talk:Subdivisions of Venezuela. -- Domino theory 13:02, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • XMLHTTPXMLHttpRequestRationale: The XMLHttpRequest object is now a Draft W3C standard[1]. This move has been suggested by a few people in the talk page with no dissent from anyone since August 2005. The only problem with doing the move is that the page already exists as a redirect to XMLHTTP, and it has a 'History', but no 'Discussion' content … Please share your opinion at Talk:XMLHTTP. • Daredevil (Marvel Comics)Daredevil (comics)Rationale: Per WP:NC and WP:D, this is overdisambiguated. There is only other article about a Daredevil in comics - a character who has been out-of-print for almost fifty years, and which could be served by a link at the top of the article. Given that the Marvel Comics DD is in-use and has been constantly for forty years, and has also been adapted to movie form and the character has appeared in various animated series, I think that a safe presumption can be made that the vast majority of people looking for an article about a Daredevil in comics will be looking for the MC one. - SoM 03:14, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Supergroup (bands)Supergroup (music)Rationale: The term band is not appropriate as a classifier. It should be "music," since we are comparing it with the terms in respect to other disciplines (ie- physics). Also, bands (as a plural) isn't even in keeping with naming policy. … Please share your opinion at Talk:Supergroup (bands). Esprit15d 20:10, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The castle is known by the original title, as is shown by the external links, and not by the new name. Although the Historic Scotland link has been given the title "Newark Castle, Inverclyde - site information", the page itself is titled Sites Detail and it makes no mention of Inverclyde, describing the castle's location as "In Port Glasgow".
A google search for "Newark Castle, Inverclyde" turned up two pages with only one article using that name[4] which was not a wikipedia article or mirror, though it did find the place on geodaisy, a link on Attractions A-Z to Hotels near Newark Castle: Port Glasgow, and the Historic Scotland page already mentioned. A search for "Newark Castle, Port Glasgow" found ten pages, mostly using that name for the castle, and four[5][6][7][8] using that title. It is therefore appropriate to restore the page to its original title. Please share your opinion at Talk:Newark Castle, Inverclyde. dave souza, talk 18:25, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Ariadne's thread (logic)Ariadne's threadRationale: "Ariadne's thread" was the original name of the article; an editor moved it to the current name and then edited the redirect to point to "Ariadne". A person looking up "Ariadne's thread" in an encyclopedia is going to want to read about the logic process, not told to "see Ariadne", which in turn would provide no useful information on the topic (or, in the present "Ariadne" article, even a mention that a separate "Ariadne's thread" article exists). The classic concept of the thread of legend is not worthy of encyclopedic merit on its own, has no article of its own, and has no need of an article of its own (it's adequately referenced in the present "Ariadne's thread (logic)" article). I believe the "(logic)" phrase appended to the title accomplishes nothing, and I think the only result of moving the article was pointless confusion. I have reverted the redirect in the meantime, but am asking for the article move itself to be reverted as a permanent solution - as the redirect was edited, I cannot do this myself. - ZM … Please share your opinion at Talk:Ariadne's thread (logic). • TwoallbeefpattiesspecialsaucelettucecheesepicklesonionsonasesameseedbunTwo all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bunRationale: Can't move this myself as there is a redirect in place. As I stated on the article's talk page: There is already some debate on this issue above. Let's put this issue to bed with consensus. It is my contention that the current name of this article has little utility, it being unlikely that someone would type into the search engine the 71 letter title, because the name does not follow the normal conventions of English, appears incongruous and silly to a native reader of English and because precedent shows that the punctuated name (Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun) is far more common through internet searches. When the name is cited in more serious sources, it appears in the punctuated form, see, for example, [9], [10], [11], [12], [13], [14] and [15]. Google returns 551 unique hits for the punctuated slogan (searched with quotes around it),[16], whereas the unpunctuated text returns 118 unique google hits. [17], a number of which are to Wikipedia and Wikipedia forks and mirrors. There is a stated rationale in a prior discussion above that the copyright of the name appears in the unpunctuated form. No evidence is provided and, in any event, I think the convention and use, rather than the company's copyright choice in 1975, should control. There is also some discussion that the slogan is intended to be read or sang quickly and the name should mirror the manner of articulation. If this were a good basis, then all manner of articles would need idiosyncratic spelling in order to conform to the manner their names are pronounced. There was some minor discussion of this move during the AFD debate

My first instinct would be to do the opposite: move List of famous Holocaust survivors to List of Holocaust survivors, in keeping with 95% of all other lists of people, which do not include the implicit "famous" in the title, as that would be redundant (all Wikipedia lists only include noteworthy, and thus "famous", entries) and potentially offensive or biased ("fame" is much harder to quantify than even notability). -Silence 20:29, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The David West article existed for the basketball player and was moved to David M West, which not only uses a middle initial that he doesn't use and is not known by, but didn't even have a period after the initial. After a few moves, he is now at David West (basketball). The original article, David West, is now a dab. There is no reason that this move should be allowed to go ahead.
