Hello, you posted a message to me to this IP telling me not to place advertising on Wikipedia even though I do not believe I have ever placed any links to advertising sites to Wikipedia or placed any advertising on Wikipedia and I carry out all editing from this account. If you doubt my claims you can check my user contributions (perhaps someone hacked my account, I will check just in case). If this is some kind of misunderstanding I apologise but I was just wondering what had happened. Hydraton31 21:11, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations

God bless you GraemeL. You're doing a bang up job. Keep up the good work

Deep House

I understand the self promotion principal. I have rescinded appropriately, thank you.

well that's ok, to be honest, i didn't even notice if yours was spelled wrong. ah well. Batman2005 21:27, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

external links

Hello, thank you for your message.

I see many external links on many pages. Why those links are permitted and not mine? - Those are totally external links, just like mine.

Please can you give me a clear explanation? - Maybe something I dont understand?

Thank you for your time. Javier

External links should be used to provide information that should be, but isn't yet, included in the article. You linked to a hotel and travel information site and there are literally thousands of those. If we were not selective about what external links to include, articles would end up with a few lines of text and hundreds of external links. --GraemeL (talk) 00:06, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Removing protection

D'OH. I wasn't thinking clearly. Thanks for the tip. - Brian Kendig 15:26, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Articles are often left protected for too long. nice to see somebody taking an interest in fixing that. --GraemeL (talk) 15:27, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

More deep house

Thank You, Deep House & quick question

Hi GraemeL, thanks 4 your note. I'm totally getting into this. I do have another question.

The film 'Deep House Movie'. It's in no way commerical. It's never been sold. It's a free film, viewable online.

It describes -- what is happening in Deep House Music -- as told by very well known 'Deep House' artists.

These artists include: Mark Farina, Miguel Migs,Roy Davis Jr,jT Donalson,Lisa Shaw,Aya, (Wax Records, Hollywood, Ca. It's historical.

So, how is it any different, than any of the other links. Why discriminate against DeepHouseMovie.com ?

I feel as if this topic, is debateable. Ya know, because it seems to be a categorical dilemma, I'm unable to see any commericalism.

Respectfully, John Long
My concern was that you were trying to promote the site. Having looked again, the movie does seem quite popular and is a documentary. I will not remove the link if you add it back to the article. --GraemeL (talk) 12:59, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Lamborghini

Why did you removed the link to the resource that includes different Lamborghini web sites while leaving pure spam sites such as tipelen.com, KLD Concept and Lambocars which are pure spam sites added by 82.93.182.224?

--Carcrazy 17:33, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All of your article spaces have been adding the link to that one site which would seem to indicate that you have some interest in promoting it. As to the other links, feel free to remove any that conflict with the guidelines at WP:EL. I've added the article to my list of pages to review for inappropriate links. It would be good if you cleaned it up before I get around to it. --GraemeL (talk) 17:39, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dubstep link

Hello, The link posted to subfm is not a commercial link. SubFm hosts and a streams dubstep dj's often. If you got to barefiles you will see that a good portion of the sets linked to there are from subfm.

Thank you

The index site is probably better than linking to individual internet radio stations. There are hundreds of them and listing them would swamp the article. --GraemeL (talk) 20:46, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can see where you are coming from GraemeL. But, Sub FM is really an important part of the international dubstep music scene now - as evidenced by the large amount of contributions by people who make dubstep music to the station and the large amount of dj sets that are posted on barefiles from Sub FM. There are hundreds of internet radio stations, but not any that I know of that feature dubstep on a weekly basis from dj's and music makers active in the dubstep music community. I'd appreciate it if you would reconsider whether or not the link should be added; it would add greatly to the informational value of the wikipedia entry on dubstep.

Thank you -w

If I could find some content on the site that added to the text in the article, I might have changed my mind. However it doesn't seem to have anything significant. Wikipedia is not a web directory. --GraemeL (talk) 21:46, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your responses. Here is some content: http://www.subfm.com/downloads.htm These downloads are sets of music mainly from producers and dj's who are active in the dubstep community. They are updated consistantly and regulalrly. In essence they are a moving musical journal of the "undercurrents" of the dubstep music scene and in some instances they are diocument of some of the tangents of the music as it evolves.

 Thank you again.

But GammeL, you are not being consistent here. You deleted a link I added to a list of Podcasts/Internet Radio that were organized by topic. Above you claim it is better not to list individual radio stations, but when I added a link to a user created collection of related podcasts/Internet radio you deleted that. Can you explain?

Thanks for your help

GraemeL,

Thanks in advance for your help. I'm working to understand how to embed links and how to leave my signature.

I searched, read, and accumulated files of scientific vitamin literature between 1994 and 1999. I did this because I take B-complex vitamins and vitamin C and I wanted to learn as much as possible about safety and effectiveness.

You've managed to get yourself logged out and this post came from an IP address. Am I right in thinking that you're User:Shbrown? If so, no problem. anybody working to add references to articles is most welcome. to sign a post, just add --~~~~ to the end of your message. Last cryonics page revert

I am wondering why you reverted/omitted the external link to "Cryonics UK". That is a significant/important organization in the world of cryonics, especially for those living in the UK. I am inclined to restore it, but I am sending this message first. --Ben Best 13:35, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I took a quick look and thought it was commercial. If I was in error and the site contains useful content, please add it back in. --GraemeL (talk) 13:37, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There are "commercial links" all over wikipedia. The wikipedia guidelines don't ban commercial links. You deleted my links, but left links to Yahoo and Google. Those guys aren't commercial.

Balloon fetishism

Hi!

Thanks for pulling the treatment section. Another sentence that should be pulled is in the top section of the article: Balloon fetishism is more popular in Germany than any other country.

There is no evidence for such a statement and possibly has more to do with the German orientation of the original article, exemplified by the English which I attempted to tidy up a while back.

Well done for all your work . . .

No problem. The edit seemed to have been made to promote a particular point of view and promote a web site. No reliable source was cited stating that the fetish was something that needed treatment. Oh, I don't have any interest in balloons, it's just that the article is a reasonable place to catch spammers dropping their web pages. --GraemeL (talk) 15:08, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

you reverted the page for the rascal company, it is Electric Mobility Corp. not The rascal company i used to work there i know people that still work there and i drive by the headquarters on a regular basis, they have not changed there name, please change it back.

We don't have an article on the parent company. I did a partial revert to your version, minus some of the other external links. --GraemeL (talk) 16:11, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tojo & co

I had no problems blocking those accounts. It seems "General Tojo" has been creating lots of accounts and uses them to edit war not only on Parkinson's disease but also in Japan-related articles. It makes it rather easy to spot this very abusive user, whose factual knowledge is eclipsed by his utter lack of collaborative skills. JFW | T@lk 16:14, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. You've obviosly been closer to the action on this one than I have. Feel free to remove or reduce the protection on the article without consulting me. It's also listed as fully protected at WP:PP if you change things. --GraemeL (talk) 16:18, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think we might have another Tojo sockpuppet - user Saldanha. Could you take a look, please? --Dan 14:54, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I did notice, but he's not obviously Tojo at the moment. I will add him to my checkuser request though. --GraemeL (talk) 14:56, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh my lord, Graemel, Tojo is making physical threats against Paul Wicks on the PD talk page. Incredible! --Dan 18:43, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A new day, and we have a new Tojo sockpuppet, or so it looks - user Mestre. He's made a mess out of the Alzheimer's and Hiroshima/Nagasaki pages as well. --Dan 15:24, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Edit patterns were close enough for me to block him as a suspected sockpuppet. --GraemeL (talk) 15:30, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that commercial sites should not be promoted in Wikipedia. However this is a unique neutral non-commerical site that does not promote one institution or individual over another. It is an important contribution to the community, and provides an illustration of what is being discussed in the Wikipedia text and the resources available. This happens often throughout Wikipedia, e.g., http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typo3, or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craigs_list

What is "commercial" about www.medicaltourism.com? It does not even contain advertising (the links are posted by patients and the medical tourism community without charge) like Craigs list. As I read the Wikipedia pillars, it complies... Hopefully I have made the case in a satisfactory manner. Unless i hear more specificlaly why it should not be done, I would like to add Medicaltourism, a non-commercial neutral link, back in with your agreement. If I am not inserting this type of link right (even though it seems to be done the same was as was done in the other numerous examples), please let me know what specificially needs to be done to make this entry compatible with these others. Thanks, your timely response is appreciated. SP 18:10, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hm, I took a closer look and you're probably correct about the content. The site could go in the external links section, but inline external links should only be used for references and mentioning only one site in the article text would be promoting it over other sites that provide a similar service. --GraemeL (talk) 18:14, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, GraemeL.

Ibiza

The commercial links such as [1] or [2] included in the Ibiza article promote Ibiza as a clubbing and sexual resort. Ibiza is much more than that and EivissaWeb is a very useful resource to discover the original culture of Ibiza, specially the diary of exhibitions, the reports and the picture data base. More over EivissaWeb follows the W3C standards and is accessible for people with disabilities. EivissaWeb was part of this article since the 10th of October 2004, until the 13th of November 2005. I don't understand why you insist this is a spammy website, and the other commercial sites are not.

I just noticed your post to the Ibiza talk page. I will review all of the links including the ones that you have suggested. --GraemeL (talk) 19:32, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Very likely. Your IP address reverses to test.smc.tas.edu.au. Is that Tasmania University, or is it a college. Link removal

Err.... it would help in your message if you said WHICH page you were talking about. I've added content and links to quite a few pages and now I'll have to visit all of them to find out the one you were referring to.....

Also, there's nothing wrong with relevant links to sites with extra content, surely. That's the POINT of the Web, with its hyperlinks.

Steve Litchfield —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Slitchfield (talk • contribs) .

All of your edits (bar one) since June 8 have been adding links to the same site across diverse subjects. The looks like nothing more than an attempt to promote that site. Your edit on Mark Romanek

Hi, why did you edit this link out: [4]? I read the linked article and found it very informative. Peter S. 07:39, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The link was added by a spammer adding links to the same site across over 150 articles. It was reported to one of the admin noticeboards (Wp:an/i#Linkspammer_-_Geraldine123). Several admins helped reverse the changes and the user was blocked. I have no problems with a regular contributor such as yourself adding the link back to that particular article if you think it was useful. --GraemeL (talk) 12:55, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not going to re-add it becasue I respect your admin. status, but I wanted you to know it was not meant to be that. Being an admin here is no big deal (there are somewhere between 800 and 1000 of us), so please don't feel bullied by that fact. My concerns are that all of your article space edits have been adding a link to a single site and this smacks of attempting to promote that site. Also, adding links to your own site is against the guidelines at WP:EL. Thanks for understanding. --GraemeL (talk) 13:08, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How is it spam to post information relevant to an article and post a link in the talk page, as you suggested, which is also relevant to the article? I see links in Wikipedia articles all the time, but they don't get deleted neurotically.

Chris Moneymaker Review

Hi Graeme,

I was thinking about adding the review back to Chris Moneymaker article today, but I'm a little leery of getting blasted again. I know that you feel we are trying to sell books, but I assure you when this link was live, it only produced about 7 clicks in two weeks. So nobody will get rich selling books from this article. Also, User 2005 didn't think a review of an autobiography of the subject was apt, whereas I disagree, but since he has no e-mail and he hasn't commented further, I can't guage his feeling on this. What do you think I should do?

Michael Opton

I'm, inclined to follow 2005's lead on this. He's interested in the subject area and I only have a few of the articles watched to catch spammers. Drop him a note on his talk page if you want to discuss it with him. --GraemeL (talk) 18:20, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Bot

I see here[6], you added:

"PD is both chronic, meaning it persists over a long period of time, and progressive, meaning its symptoms grow worse over time. It is not contagious. Although some PD cases appear to be hereditary, and a few can be traced to specific genetic mutations, most cases are sporadic — that is, the disease does not seem to run in families. Many researchers now believe that PD results from a combination of genetic susceptibility and exposure to one or more environmental factors that trigger the disease."

Which is blacklisted[7]. So it did not make a mistake. I'll remove that from the bad list.Voice-of-All 23:32, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps it should check if the changes are made by an admin. --GraemeL (talk) 23:34, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I am working on that, since it will also make it run a tad faster. Thanks. I'll just be more careful with the blacklist though, I'll keep it to spam.Voice-of-All 23:36, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I've no doubt that the end product will make our lives a lot easier. Keep at it. --GraemeL (talk) 23:37, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll just be more careful. I've whitelisted admins, though the list has to be manually updated to avoid more server use (as in I just copy-paste it from my bot's adminlist dump). It is a bet discouraging[8] though, but I can definetely get this right after some careful decisions on what to blacklist. The point is to revert spam (or stuff by banned users) so that no one has to waste their time doing it (and hence no protection requests) and the vandal just gives up since no one has to waste their time anymore.Voice-of-All 00:00, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hi!

i added an external link to a website about idn domains but you deleted it and called it spam. Cmon : ( Im glad that at least you didnt delete the images i added to the article. And the reason that i deleted some external links was because those websites didnt contain any relevant data.

Heat Shrink Tubing

Hi Graeme,

I recently improved an article (heat shrink tubing) by correcting some very wrong information. I felt it would be ok to put a link to my website in there since I actually contributed to the article. The links have been subsequently removed, and I'm wondering how I can get my link put back in without someone removing it.

I am happy to contribute my knowledge, but I would also like to receive credit for the contribution.

I understand you don't want people just putting a link to their website into your articles, but since I actually contribute to the articles, I don't see anything wrong with putting a little plug in for myself.

The Link I put in was for my new website www.buyheatshrink.com. As you can see from the site, I'm not just trying to sell products. I also pride myself in putting useful information to inform my buyers about the products they're looking at.

Respectfully, Marc

First of all, thanks for your contributions. Improving articles is always appreciated. Your site actually had me thinking for a few minutes after looking at it, but I came to the conclusion that the commercial aspect outweighs the benefits to the project of linking there. In my opinion, the educational aspects of the site are too intertwined with links to buy the products. If it was possible to have much more of a separation between the two aspects, then linking to the site might be worthwhile. --GraemeL (talk) 18:07, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That is: 27-10 to keep. While I know that it’s not a strict vote-counting exercise, the usual rule of thumb is not to delete unless there is a strong consensus expressed to do so – i.e., give the benefit of the doubt toward keeping. Here, process was thwarted.

The administrator closing the AfD acted contrary to the consensus expressed at the AfD by making his/her own judgment that the content was not encyclopedic. The whole issue of alternate placenames is very much encyclopedic and has been the subject on ongoing debate among Wikipedians, for example at: Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (geographic names) and the various disputes about whether to use “Danzig” or “Gdansk” for that city near the Baltic, etc.. Also, similar articles remain extant in several other Interwiki’s (since the article is deleted, the interwiki links are gone too, otherwise I could cite which), so they appear encyclopedic to people who speak other languages. Podcasts

Hello,

You claimed that adding a link to podcasts related to a particular topic is spam. I do not agree with this and was not trying to spam anyone.

All over wikipedia there are examples to links to external resources, which is where I added links to podcasts related to the topic.

Podcasts is a growing medium and pointing wikipedia users to a collection of podcasts related to the wikipedia page is a valid resource. I put a lot of time into doing this because I wanted this content to be available to the community and you simply deleted it without even first asking me about it.

I am really really upset about this and will probably never support wikipedia again. I would like to speak to someone else about this because I really don't think this is span at all.

Alex Castro —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.235.1.172 (talk • contribs) .

All of your edits are adding links to the same site. Please contribute content, not external links. --GraemeL (talk) 15:27, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Here is an example, if you go to the Wikipedia/Poker page you will see under the section at the end of the page (external resources), a link to things like:

   * Yahoo Poker Directory
   * Google Poker Directory
   * Rec.Gambling.Poker Newsgroup

A like to Poker Podcasts isn't any different that the links about. Each of the sites about are "commercial" - I think Yahoo and Google are commercial, arent' they?

I would like to speak to a "non-novice" span fighter, because I think you are not aware of podcasts growing importance as a medium and you are making a poor judgement. I personally hat spam, and I'm actually a bit offended by this whole thing.

The directories are listed to try and stop spammersfrom plastering the articles with useless links. Continuing to link your site will only result in it being added to the site-wide spam blacklist. --GraemeL (talk) 15:31, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've requested an advocate. To further dialog, I've included my email to him here...

Hi,

GrammeL deleted a bunch of my edits and claimed I was spamming wikipedia. He claimed the following:

- That you can't add links to commercial sites on wikipedia - You can't add links to sites you own - You can't had links to lists/directories/etc...you have to add "content" in the form of writing.

Here is the situation.

- I started a podcasting community/directory site called Pluggd. Users can define how the site is organized via tags. So one of the things you will see on the site are tags of specific niche topics. - As an avid wikipedia user I've seen instances ALL OVER wikipedia, usually under an External Links/Resources section at the bottom of the page to this type of information. - So I started adding links that I felt were appropriate but also respectful of the community and inline with the wikipedia guidelines. - For example, on the wikipedia podcasts page there was a list of podcast directories. Including competitors to my site and sites owned by Yahoo. I added my site (DELETED AS SPAM). Now there are a ton of mentions to other podcasting resources on the podcasting site, but nothing - I noticed that certain topics like Anime, Wine, Poker, etc., have lists to external resources and sites. So I added links to the collections of podcasts on Pluggd created by the Pluggd community. For example, under Anime External Links you will find links to external Anime sites. So I added a link "Anime Related Podcasts" that went to pluggd.com/tag/anime which included a dynamic list of podcasts that are tagged as anime by users. I felt this was appropriate and respectful of wikipedia. (DELETED AS SPAM) - I did not ad things to the top sections unless I felt they added some real value. So for example, in the NASCAR wiki there was a prior section of NASCAR broadcasting and how you can get NASCAR on XM Radio, certain TV broadcasts, etc. So I added to that section and said, "As a popular sport, NASCAR is also represented in new alternatives to traditional media like podcasts (link to all the NASCAR tagged podcasts on Pluggd)". I tried to keep this subtle and neutral. I wasn't like "COME TO PLUGGD FOR THE BEST PODCASTS ON NASCAR" which I would have considered overtly commercial and self serving. (DELETED AS SPAM)

I read the wikipedia guidelines and couldn't find anything that said you can't link to sites you own, you can't provide links (you must write stuff), and you can't link to commercial sites.

Here are some counter examples:

1. Wikipedia/Poker - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poker

- go to the bottom of the page and you will see

External links

   * Yahoo Poker Directory
   * Google Poker Directory
   * Rec.Gambling.Poker Newsgroup

Yahoo and Google are both commercial sites. I would argue they are more commercial than Pluggd because, well, Pluggd has no VC investors, makes no revenue, had no advertising on the site, etc. So the link to Poker Podcasts on Pluggd is deleted as pam, but Yahoo Poker Directory can stay? I don't understand this.

2. Wikipedia/Wine - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine

- go to the bottom of the page and you see

External links

   * A brief history in wine (takes you to the globe.news. A public media company, with revenue, ad supported, paid subscriptions, etc.) Is this not a commercial site?)
   * Chateau Hajji Firuz - (site run by penn. not commercial)
   * World's Earliest Wine - (site run by archeology magazine. They promote subscriptions to their magazines, run advertising, and request donations. Is this not commercial?)
   * Depiction of Wine in Persian Miniature - PDF download
   * End of the vine- (the Guardian Unlimied. One of the UK's largest newspapers and online news sites. Ad all over the place, subscriptions, etc. Is this not a commercial site?)
   * Wine Information - (http://www.winetopix.com. A wine portal. Ads. Is this not a commercial site?)
   * Winery Directory - (a winery directory. can't tell if this is commercial. but it isn't written content. it is a list of things. these were things that GrammeL declared against the wikipedia way)
   * Sommelier India - (a blog with ads. is this not commercial?)
   * A collection of podcasts about wine and for wine lovers (DELETED AS SPAM)

3. Wikipedia/Anime - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime

External links

   * AnimeNfo: Anime database, reviews, and community forums.
   * AniDB: Database of anime series, hashes, fansub groups, and 'mylist' feature.
   * Anime and Magna Podcasts (DELETED AS SPAM)

There are links to "commercial sites" all over wikipedia. The links I added didn't even use the web site's name, because I wasn't trying to be too self serving. But if you are interested in Anime, I think putting a link to user created content in audio format is just as reasonable as putting a link to a fan web site, or directory of anime, etc.

I really think GrammeL was wrong. He seems to have his own person viewpoint about what should be deleted that isn't in the Wikipedia guidelines. I was not trying to spam. I used by real name, my real personal gmail account, and tried to be neutral and thoughtful about where I put these links. I am passionate about podcasting and was partially motivated by a sincere desire that a Internet user who came to the Wikipedia Anime page (for example) would find real informative value in knowing that people care enough about this topic to create their own audio content and be able to easily view the list of anime related podcasts and potentially listen to them.

Explain to me how what I did was wrong?

Not a spammer, Alex Castro

P.S. Some of the sites that compete with mine, like podfeed.net actually put in links to their top 100 podcasts (see below) and that isn't spam??? Also, another competitive podcast site (podcastpicle.com) has their own wikipedia page (they are a commercial site). Also, Apple's iTunes is listed under the "See also" section (listed below). Apple (with their lock 'em in DRM) is a commercial site. So apple's iTune directory can stay...podcast pickle can stay...podfeet can stay...but my site is deleted? It is hard for me to understand the logic here.

You might get a faster reply if you post to the administrator's noticeboard --GraemeL (talk) 16:30, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What happened to being civil? You are now personally attacking me in public, but calling me a spammer?

These links were not going to the homepage. These links were going to specific sub-pages that are created by users. If all the links were going to the homepage of the site that would be spam. But since the links to directly to a collection of content that is directly related to the wikipedia, the content is not owned by me or the site, we don't put ads in the content, we don't control what content shows up, users do, that is no different that listing Yahoo or Google's directory in external links to prevent people from adding every single new podcast episode about wines.

Oops. I didn't realize that. I removed that. Still you are being incivilil. I am not a spammer. How would you suggest that podcast content related to say wines be incorporated appropriately?

You are being incivil and hurtful but you are not saying, "well, if your intentions were really not spam. you would do something like X, Y, Z." Instead of being heavy handed, why don't you help me find a way to contibute responsibly.

I am really not trying to spam. I do look for things to contribute in writing form, but just didn't feel like what I had to say was good enough, so that is why I added external links. That was the value I felt i could add to the community.

I would encourage you to take a step back and ask yourself if you aren't unfairly judging this as spam without taking the time to understand podcasts and what I am doing. I can understand that fighting spam is a tough battle and you may be jumping to conclusions.

Thanks for withdrawing the legal threat. Please post to the post to the administrator's noticeboard with your concerns about my interpretation of the external linking policies and guidelines. It is probably the best place for you to get feedback from other administrators. --GraemeL (talk) 16:49, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As a courtesy, I would appreciate is you would remove instances where you personally called me a spammer. That is a personal attack and not civil. It is fine for to claim that the links were spam...that is a specific action...and the community can make a determination...but you've projected that action to make a judgement about me personally which I find highly offensive.

Done (I think). You might not get an answer to your post to the board as you posted to a thread several days old as the page moves rather quickly and people might not look back at older threads that they don't have an interest in. It would be best to post a new thread (Click this link to do that). You should also sign your post by adding --~~~~ to the end of your post. That will add your IP address and a date stamp when you save the page. --GraemeL (talk) 17:05, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I am a little drained by this experience, and I'm not sure how much I care to fight this at this point. It seems there is a growing collection of folks who have become editors with a certain viewpoint and political mindset that is making wikipedia less credible. I am particularly disturbed by your actions, althoubgh I appreciate your willingness to step back from the personal attacks, and the fact that there is no consistency around this. I will see what the other administrators have to say, but I will not longer contribute to, link to, or use wikipedia. I am not powerful enough to fight the wikipedia elite, so I'm going to do the only things a single person can do - leave. There are alternatives out there in the wikisphere and I'm going to see if I can find people who are a little less quick to drop the hammer without mercy somewhere else on the web.

The main problem is that Wikipedia is a very popular site with over 9,000 page hits and over 100 edits per second the last I checked. commercial links and people adding their own sites are against the guidelines, but with the throughput and over 1 million articles to choose from, inappropriate links do get added. If things are left to their own devices, articles end up like the example given at WP:SPAMHOLE. With so many links added by drive by users, all of the links in the article become effectively useless as there is no focus to them. --GraemeL (talk) 17:31, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I specifically read the guidelines prior to posting and purposedly used my own name (not the tactics of a drive by spammer) and only added sections where I have personal knowledge and interest. For example, I know that the wine and dog podcasts, for example, are very good because I've listened to them ALL. So I knew that they would be useful to other people interested in wines and dogs. I didn't post of horses for example, cause I don't know anything about those podcasts. Can you honestly say you listened to the content to make the evaluation? I don't think you did because it would have taken a lot of time.

The problem with wikipedia is that there is a growing army of radical editors, who have good intentions, but have basically turned into bullies who make a bunch of quick decisions and castigate people without having any real knowledge of the situation. I also think this will lead to balkanization of wikipedia, because there seems to be a common thread here. The radical, or at least from my viewpoint, editors seem to be primarily in Europe where a more socialist view point is more common and what is considered commercial is a bit different than the US (both my parents are of European decent and I go there to visit family all the time, so this isn't some American who never left the states). There seems to be no conception that part of their conclusions are based on culture and not just language which makes me wonder if wikipedia should be broken up in a different way. In a way, I'd hate to see this, but it is probably inevitable. I've spent a fair amount of time researching the people pages of "radical editors" and have been surprised by how much they seem to have in common. Even one of the advocates (US baseD) wrote me back and said, "Sorry dude, this is totally out of control. I kinda agree with you but the hard core radicals have taken over and I really can't help you. If I try, they will just gang up on you."

That is the real problem.

I can not remove links. Part Deux

Thanks. I can remove links but I do not have 'clout' and when I try to remove links in the past spammers repost juicy spam.

I knew you could do it!

Thanks!

No problem. The article is actually on my watchlist and I have no idea why the link remained there as long as it did. Try adding an edit summary along the lines of "Removing blogspam per [[WP:EL]]". That may or may not help.--GraemeL (talk) 17:34, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

World Cup Reports

Hi GraemeL,

I was recently contacted by you and asked to stop advertising in the world cup story. But NowPublic is open source news network and are not selling anything. I posted a link to photographs taken by by people who are at the games and in Berlin. How is this different from news reports created by other news organizations? I've read your spam policy and I don't think my link qualifies as spam.

Respectfully,

Michael Tippett, NowPublic http://corp.nowpublic.com/?q=node/174

Please read this. I also think that HARD.fm should be left in the external links. It is a free radio station on the internet that anyone may listen to, primarily playing music in the hardstyle genre. Please reconsider a link deletion

Hi GraemeL. I recently added a link on the Renewable Energy article, which you promptly removed. Unfortunately I share an IP with many other people, some of whome appear to be vandals and link spammers. When I added the link, I simply did not think to check the Edits history of my IP (66.207.118.206), and now I regret not taking the 5 seconds to create a user account. I have now created an account to make changes under in order to distance myself from others on my IP.

Concerning the link I added (www.therenewableplanet.com), I truly believe it would be a valuable link for the article. In fact, the site is a more comprehensive version of another site listed in the same article (www.green-project.org) which is allowed to stay. The site is entirely non-commercial, and provides information on the location, type and amount of renewable energy production around the entire world. It is a community based website which allows users to submit their own energy production information for others to see.

Please, let me know what you think

Best regards --SeanMD 04:19, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

the you tube links from jose+10

hello

about: jose+10

I saw that you removed links to the adidas jose+10 ads on youtube.com

Are there any particular reasons for this? I added the links back and only then saw that you had removed them previously.

Is there a copyright issue involved in this? If so, I will remove the links, but I think the ads are available publicly on the adidas website

otherwise, i feel that viewing the ads is critical to make any sense of the text on the page, and the links are therefore justified.

regards,

Adil Najam page

Dear GraemeL, I just found to my great dismay that the Adil Najam page has been deleted.. and found you on the list of kind un-deleting admins. I find it very useful to be able to locate pages for my Boston University, Tufts and Harvard professors here on wiki -- gives me an easy central place to find links to their work but even more interestingly a window into what they've done outside of their scholarly pursuits.

The page clearly passes the WP:BIO requirements and I'd appreciate if you'd give me a hand re-instating it. I'll also verify all the information on the page. Thanks--Franz.mpls 04:40, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Stress - External Link

Hi GraemeL,

Just wanted to check why you removed the great free [stress test ] This is used by colleges across the UK and the USA as a completely free service for students and has no commercial aspect. It just resides on a web site of a company doing chair massage in companies. You don't have to be a customer to use this. Seems a shame to throw the baby out with the bathwater as we say in England ;)

Hi!

The germlish guy promoting treatment has vandalised your considered alterations again . . . he clearly has a vested interest in promoting "treatment" and the standard of English degrades the quality of Wikipedia.

Dear GraemeL,

I would like to point out that I am not adding commercial links to the Labels category on Wikipedia. I find this website of useful information and it explains the security features and difference between the types of asset labels and tags available. I could understand if my link was 'spammy' however this is not the case and I feel that it is of valuable importance.

I have been the owner of a security business in the past and I'm sure that I offer good advice and input that suits the 'wikipedia' community. I feel that your comments are not justifyable and are without reason.

Have you visited the resource and read about the different types of labels?

I'm interested to hear your retort to this and look forward to constructive discussion.

You warned me, but I need context

I believe that you left a message for me warning me not to modify pages in unacceptable ways. I'm sorry if I modified something in a way unacceptable to you. Thanks, GraemeL!

The Scotland article has just been put up for Wikipedia:Peer review. This is a crucial step in getting this article up to WP:FA status, or at least closer to it, which can only have positive effects on all of Wikipedia's Scotland-related coverage. The best way to get the most out of peer review is to monitor for any comments made and try to respond to them promptly. I hope that you may have some possibility to assist in this task? Thanks. --Mais oui! 16:33, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am beginning to think that the Scottish Wikipedians' notice board is not the best vehicle for pushing up the quality of the Scotland article (we ought to try to get it to WP:FA, in order to get into Wikipedia:Version 0.5, or, failing that, Wikipedia:Version 1.0), and the other key Scottish articles. It is becoming increasingly obvious to me that we really ought to start up the long-mooted WikiProject Scotland.

Most of the stuff at the notice board (at least on the bottom half) is actually WikiProject material anyway, and the Talk page is really being used as a WikiProject talk already! The notice board should be just that: for bunging up brief notices and signposts. I am thinking of launching a Wikiproject and correspondingly radically clearing out, and chopping down, the noticeboard (a re-launch if you like). The Scotland Portal concept is fine (but currently mediocre/undynamic content), but in stasis: it needs a good kick up the jacksie.

For comparison, have a look at:

If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Radwell International

An article I've written has been moved. I believe the article in its current form to be legitimate. I've worked hard to make a valuable contribution. Can you help?

The administrator that moved it left this message in my talk:

I've moved Radwell International to User:Brian Radwell/Radwell International, since you've put a lot of work in on it. However, the article shouldn't be put back in the main article space because it's a recreation of material that was previously deemed inappropriate for Wikipedia (see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Radwell International.) You seem to have done some good work on it; I don't have an opinion right now as to whether or not this could be re-added to Wikipedia, but when you're ready to try the community's opinion, you should open up a deletion review, and link to both the deletion debate and to the article in your userspace, so people can see what you are proposing. Following a successful period of consultation WikiProject Scotland has now been launched. As a participant in the Scottish Wikipedians' notice board I wonder if you may be interested in this new endeavour too? If so, please sign-up here. The WikiProject will be replacing some of the functions of the notice board, especially those in the lower half.

While I am here, please also have a look at the new Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Scotland and give it a "Watch". It was started up by User:Visviva a few days ago, after long being mooted at the notice board, and effectively replaces all the AfD listings at the notice board. Being a transclusion of all the on-going discussions it is a much more useful tool.

Even if you do not want to spend too much time on the WikiProject, please give it a "Watch" and feel free to contribute to Talk page discussions: the more contributors the merrier.

All the best. --Mais oui! 10:47, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The FHA spammer 24.164.170.38 is at it again -- I see you blocked him in the past -- want to do so again? Twice today he switched the legitimate external link to a commercial site, and has done so many times before. Thanks! Afelton

Federal Housing Administration spam links

back in July you warned an anonymous user to stop inserting his own link www.myfha.net in place of the link to FHA's website, www.fha.gov

He's back. We've been editing and reverting for the past day.

Hi, 66.31.6.101 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) is requesting an unblock, claiming that it was his brother who previously vandalized. Can you look into it and make a decision? Thanks. --Nlu (talk) 04:47, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I took a look and somebody had already lifted the block. I'm happy enough to leave it unblocked. If whoever is on the IP is not going to vandalise, there is no reason for it to remain blocked. --GraemeL (talk) 00:37, 18 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
