Background
During the tail-end of the first leg of Talking Heads' Remain In Light Tour, Chris Frantz & Tina Weymouth were struggling financially. The extensive number of additional musicians playing on the tour were proving expensive, leaving them with only $2,000 in their shared bank account. Upon hearing that David Byrne & Jerry Harrison were both working on solo albums, the couples' accountant suggested to them they should produce something themselves, in order to stay financially afloat, so they decided to create a record as a collective, rather than as individuals. Gary Kurfirst, the manager for the two attempted to make a deal with Seymour Stein of Sire Records, who had signed both Byrne & Harrison at that point. Stein initially refused, with the reasoning being that he couldn't afford three solo albums by Talking Heads, but eventually offered them only an incredibly small fraction of the amount he had offered Byrne to make an album.

Upon recommendation from Kurfirst, Chris Blackwell offered the duo a European deal with Island Records, provided that they record a single at Compass Point Studios as a sort of test.

In March of 1981 Crhis Frantz & Tina Weymouth flew to Nassau, where moved into an apartment near Compass Point Studios, Blackwell asked Weymouth & Frantz to come up with a name for the apartment, with Frantz deciding on Tom Tom Club. The group paid for the apartment in exchange for making the record.

For the first two weeks scheduled for recording, their producer, Lee "Scratch" Perry, did not attend the sessions. It wasn't until Kurfirst telephoned Perry to ask why he hadn't been attending, when he stated he wanted $1,000 an hour to produce, suggesting that the album would be finished in only eight hours. Following their refusal, Frantz & Weymouth asked Blackwell if they could produce the record themselves with Steven Stanley, who had worked with them on Remain In Light.

Recording
Following a four week long stay more in Nassau in March of 1981, Chris Frantz was ready to begin recording, but was anxious that they didn't have any material written, and began to drink Myer's Rum to calm his nerves. This resulted in Frantz becoming drunk and unable to play during their first session, but quickly made up for it on later dates.

The song writing process, adapted from the style created during the Remain In Light sessions, would rely on Frantz playing a beat along with a drum machine, which Tina Weymouth would them play bass guitar over, the two would then improvise simplistic keyboard parts using their Prophet-5. For percussion on Wordy Rappinghood, Frantz purchased a Tympani from a local music store, which was used on the top of each measure.

Tom Tom Club is the debut studio album by American new wave band Tom Tom Club, released in 1981, containing the UK hit singles "Wordy Rappinghood", which reached No. 7 in June 1981 and "Genius of Love", which reached No. 65 in October of the same year. It was re-released in the UK in 1982 to include "Under the Boardwalk", which reached No. 22 in August 1982. When released in the United States, "Genius of Love" peaked at No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100. Both "Wordy Rappinghood" and "Genius of Love" topped the US dance chart.
Three days into recording, Chris Blackwell, owner of Island Records, and financier of the sessions, heard the instrumental recordings that the duo had made (Wordy Rappinghood, Genius Of Love & Lorelei) and told them they could make an album, after making a single.

The album was re-released on May 19, 2009, as a part of a two-CD deluxe package with the band's second studio album, Close to the Bone (1984). The album was further reissued on Limited Edition white vinyl by Real Gone Music on March 1, 2019.
When it came time to create vocals for the recordings, they immediately thought of The Sweetbreaths, a band of Tina and her sisters that recorded the backing vocals used on the Talking Heads song 'Air'. The Sweetbreaths were made up of Tina, Laura & Lani Weymouth, and became part of the core lineup of the Tom Tom Club.

Slant Magazine listed the album at No. 87 on its Best Albums of the 1980s list.
The first song recorded with the four piece lineup was 'Wordy Rappingworth', starting with the backing vocals 'What Are Words Worth?'. For the main chorus of the song they used the schoolyard chant 'A Ram Sam, Sam.' Frantz then suggested that Tina rap to the song, which proved harder than they thought, Steven Stanely decided to record her takes one line at a time, so they could be edited together later. During mixing Stanely added the typewriter sound effects to the intro of the song. After completeing the mix, Blackwell was called in to hear it. Blackwell was incredibly pleased with the song, and wanted to release the song as a single. When Blackwell asked what the bands name was, they replied with 'Tom Tom Club.'
