Sashi Kumar Balakrishnan Menon (born 23 February 1952) is an Indian journalist and academician. He headed the Asian College of Journalism after it was acquired by the Hindu group and shifted its base from Bangalore to Chennai. He is the founder of the first private television channel, Asianet in Malayalam.[1][2]
Early life and education
Kumar was born at Karupadanna near Kodungallur in Thrissur District of the erstwhile State of Travancore–Cochin.[3] He did his schooling at the Don Bosco Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Chennai. He completed his graduation from Loyola College, Chennai, and post graduation in history from the Madras Christian College.

He also presented Money Matters, a programme on the economy. He did Tana Bana, a cultural feature, and Jan Manch, an interactive forum with Ministers and a cross-section of society. He also anchored the Commonwealth Heads of State meet in Bangalore, the Non-aligned summit in Delhi and many International Film Festivals of India.

As a print journalist, he was the first West Asia (or Middle East) Correspondent of The Hindu. He opened the West Asia bureau of the publication in Bahrain in 1984 and covered the Iran-Iraq conflict, Middle East politics, the Palestinian liberation struggle, for the next couple of years. In Bahrain, he also presented news on Radio Bahrain.
In 1986, he returned to India and set up the television wing of Press Trust of India, the PTI-TV.[4] From 1986 to 1992, that he produced the series of docu-features. In late 1992, he quit PTI, and launched Asianet, India’s first satellite TV channel in a regional language in Malayalam. Simultaneously, he also launched Asianet Satcom, a cable company in Kerala that took up state-wide cabling using the electricity poles. After a 10-month battle, he lost control of the Asianet Satellite Communications Limited.[4][6]
Asian College of Journalism
In 2000, Sashi Kumar founded the Media Development Foundation (MDF) as a nonprofit trust that set up the Asian College of Journalism (ACJ) in Chennai with the support of the Hindu group.[7] N. Ram and N. Murali of The Hindu group, Radhika Menon, his wife and editor of Tulika Publishers, and former Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Dr. C. P. Chandrasekhar, were the other trustees.
As Filmmaker
In 2004, he scripted and directed a full length feature film in Hindi titled ‘Kaya Taran’ (Chrysalis).[8][9] The film is based on the anti-Sikh riots of 1984 and 2002 Gujarat riots.[10][11] The film won him the G.Aravindan Award for the Best Debutant Filmmaker in India in 2004 and was selected for the Indian Panorama in the International Film Festival at Goa that year.
