Robert A. Hawkins (May 18, 1987 – December 5, 2007) was the mass murderer of 9 people[1] with an SKS rifle in the Westroads Mall shooting before committing suicide.
Early life
Hawkins was described as "troubled"[2] and suffered from depression. He formally attended Papillion-La Vista High School, later dropping out and receiving a GED. He had lived with two friends and their mother in a ranch-style house in Bellevue.[2]
Shooting
By witnesses of the shooting, the gunman had been described as a tall male, possibly wearing a full body animal costume.[3] Also, a note that could be interpreted as a suicide note was turned over to the Sarpy County Sheriff's Department shortly after the shooting. The note, which is reported to read "I'm going out in style"[4], was written by a 20 year-old male named Robert A. Hawkins of Bellevue, Nebraska, who subsequently has been identified by the police as the gunman.[5] In the note he also reportedly boasted "Now I'll be famous"[6]
Hawkins was arrested on November 24, 2007, for two misdemeanors, one of which was underage possession of alchol. He was due in court for an arraignment on December 19, 2007.[5]
