Parag Agrawal (born 21 May 1984)[1] is an Indian-American technology executive, and the chief executive officer (CEO) of Twitter since November 2021.[2] Agrawal joined Twitter as a software engineer in 2011 and became the chief technology officer in 2017. On 29 November 2021, Jack Dorsey announced that he was resigning as CEO of Twitter and that Agrawal was replacing him, with immediate effect.[3]

Education

Agrawal was born in Ajmer, Rajasthan, India.[4][5] Later he shifted to Mumbai. His father was a senior official in the Indian Department of Atomic Energy and his mother is a retired school teacher[6]. He did his Schooling and Intermedite at Atomic Energy Central School No.4. He was a classmate of singer Shreya Ghoshal. Agrawal won a gold medal at the 2001 International Physics Olympiad held in Turkey. He earned 77th rank in the IIT Joint Entrance Exam in 2000, and Agrawal obtained his B.Tech. degree in computer science and engineering from IIT Bombay in 2005.[7] Agrawal then moved to the United States to pursue a PhD in computer science from Stanford University under the guidance of Jennifer Widom.[8][9]

Views and policies on online speech

Agrawal is the most prominent CEO of an American social media company to voluntarily host the Taliban and Ayatollah, with the Free Press Journal expressly noting, "Twitter allows other controversial characters like Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khameini and organisations like the Taliban to use its service."[10]

In an interview with MIT Technology Review in November 2020, when asked about free speech Agrawal said: "Our role is not to be bound by the First Amendment, but our role is to serve a healthy public conversation... focus less on thinking about free speech, but thinking about how the times have changed."[11]

On 29 November 2021, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced that he was resigning from Twitter and that Agrawal would be the new CEO of the company.[12] Following the announcement, Agrawal faced criticism from conservatives for a 2010 tweet which read, "If they are not gonna make a distinction between Muslims and extremists, then why should I distinguish between white people and racists."[13] Agrawal claimed to be quoting Aasif Mandvi during a story on The Daily Show.[14]

Shortly before Agrawal's appointment as CEO of Twitter, while Agrawal was Twitter's chief technology officer, the U.S. Department of Justice and FBI stated that Twitter employees were selling identifying information and location data of dissidents and human rights activists to repressive and authoritarian governments and dictatorships, resulting in the disappearance, torture and execution of dissidents.[15][16][17][18]

A day after Agrawal's appointment as CEO, Twitter issued a new content policy stating, "Beginning today, we will not allow the sharing of private media, such as images or videos of private individuals without their consent."[19] Almost immediately thereafter several accounts of Iran's exiled prominent human rights activists were suspended, with some noting: "New Twitter rules are supposed to make activists/women etc. feel safe but it's become useful to Islamic republic of Iran's lobbyists/apologists abroad to report & suspend whistleblower accounts that fight against tyranny & human rights violations in Iran."[20] and: "Very strange to notice twitter is suspending the accounts of some activists critical of Mullahs' regime in Iran. There must be some concerted efforts behind this twitter."[21]

Career

Agrawal held leadership positions at Microsoft Research and Yahoo! Research prior to joining Twitter as a software engineer in 2011.[22][23] In October 2017, Twitter announced the appointment of Agrawal as chief technology officer following the departure of Adam Massinger.[24] In December 2019, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced that Agrawal would be in charge of Project Bluesky, an initiative to develop a decentralized social network protocol.[25][26]

Personal life

He is married to Vineeta Agrawal [27][28]. She is a general partner at Andreessen Horowitz, a venture capital firm.[29][30] They have one son, born in 2018.[31]
