National Institute Of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar) , an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Actwas established in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College (REC), Silchar. NIT Silchar is situated on the banks of river Barak. In year 2002, it was upgraded to the status of an NIT from a Regional Engineering College(REC).

NIT Silchar was ranked 26 and 24 for the year 2005 and 2007 respectively among Indias Top T schools by DataQuest.

In Infrastructure parameter , NIT silchar comes in 2nd place among all NITs only after NIT Trichy. This is also according to DQ ratings. The institute has undergone rapid and radical transformattion in its Infrastructure and Academic facilities during the last 4 years since its upgradation to NIT.

Silchar is a district headquarter of Chachar, Assam. Being a peaceful place in the North-East earned it the bon mot of "Island of Peace" from India's Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Silchar has become a centre of Education in Assam , with one NIT, side by side with a Medical College and a Central University.


History

Regional Engineering College, Silchar was established in 1967 as a joint venture of Government of India and Government of Assam under the administration of a society registered under society registration Act XXI of 1860. The college was transformed into National Institute of Technology in the year 2002, and bestowed with the status of Deemed University by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development.

The multifarious reforms -that are being introduced from then by the reformed Board of Governors, delegated with a greater degree of autonomy for exercising its deliberation over diverse issues pertaining to cardinal matters ranging from academic to extracurricular excellence, are bringing about a tangible difference in the rudimentary paradigm of achieving a high standard in engineering education.

Identified as a Centre of Excellence by the Government of India, the institute is reinventing itself to crush the competition from its cotemporaries in various domains. Very optimistic developmental programs have been undertaken towards modernization of laboratories, computing facilities and library automation. Use of advanced teaching aids and computing facilities provide extensive scope for the students to attain a very high standard required in present day fast changing scenario of technology.

Infrastructure

NIT Silchar is situated on a sprawling campus spread over 650 acres (2.6 km2) of land on the outskirts of Silchar amid breathtaking scenery. It is surrounded by beautiful lakes and hillocks.

NITS is a fully residential institution with six hostels for boys and one for girls. The capacity of boys hostels is 2000 and that of the girls hostel is 150. Room allotment is done in such a way that students from different parts of country freely intermingle with each other depicting national integration. 24 Hours high speed internet connection is available in all the hostels.

A 600 bed state-of-the-art new Men's hostel (hostel 7) is near completion state.

Location

The Institute is located on the Silchar-Hailakandi road at a distance of about 8 kilometers from the southern outskirts of Silchar town. Buses, auto-rickshaws and taxis can be hired from the town to reach the institute. Silchar is situated at 92.51 degrees East longitude and 24.5 degrees North latitude and at a height of 114.68 meters above sea level. This place is the headquarters of the Cachar district in Assam and is linked to the rest of the country by road, rail and air.

Communication

Reachable by air, rail and road from Guwahati/Kolkata. Well connected by road with other North-Eastern states.

Air

Indian Airlines operates daily flights between Silchar and Kolkata. There are also direct flights to Silchar from Guwahati. Moreover, flight services are present between Silchar and Imphal. Air Deccan is also in operation nowadays with their regular flight service between Silchar and Kolkata. Silchar airport is at Kumbhirgram and local buses and taxis directly connect the airport with Silchar town.

Train

A railway line connects Silchar to Guwahati and the rest of the country via Lumding. Daily trains are available between Silchar and Lumding and the railway tracks are of metre gauge kind. The scenery along this route is really worth watching. Lumding is well-connected on the rail-route with Guwahati. Silchar railway station is in the proper town.

Road

Silchar has a road link with Guwahati via Shillong. However, the road regularly blocks by landslides in rainy season. Numerous deluxe buses and taxis ply along the 340 km long National Highway connecting Silchar and Guwahati.
