Malt-O-Meal is a brand of breakfast cereals manufactured by The Malt-O-Meal company. The company's mission is to be the leader in value by providing low cost national brand quality products and competitive service.
In 1919, the inventor of Malt-O-Meal cereal, John Campbell, founded the Campbell Cereal Company. Based in Owatonna, Minnesota, the company produced a unique tasting hot wheat cereal, known as Malt-O-Meal. In 1927, the company moved to the Ames Mill in Northfield, Minnesota. In 1936, the company moved its corporate headquarters to Minneapolis, Minnesota, while keeping its production in Northfield. In 1953, the company changed its name to Malt-O-Meal.
During the 60's and 70's, Malt-O-Meal began making cold cereals, which often replicated popular brands. These cereals were introduced in bags that often offered up to twice as much for the same cost as other brands.
In 2003, Malt-O-Meal began producing original cold cereal products. The first product was Balance with Berries, a bran cereal with strawberries. This was followed by the introduction of Blueberry Muffin Tops in 2004, and Honey Oat Blenders and Balance in 2005.
In 2007, Malt-O-Meal took part in the "reverse product placement" marketing campaign for The Simpsons Movie and packaged one of their cereals, Tootie Frooties, (see 6 July 2007 KARE-TV report) as "Krusty-O's". The cereal was sold in 7-Eleven stores across North America along with other The Simpsons related products.[1][2]
