Early life and education

Kaul was born in Long Island, New York to an immigrant family.[3] Her father is from Safapora, Kashmir and mother is from New Delhi.[4][5] Her early life was influenced by discussions about the Kashmir conflict.[4][6] She spent her early life in Wayne, New Jersey, where she studied at Vidyapith, learning about Sanskrit Vedic heritage, Hindi, mythology, and religion. At the age of 17, she moved to Washington, D. C. for her college education.[4] At the age of 19, she participated in the Washington Leadership Program, where she worked on Capitol Hill and learned about legislative and governmental processes.[7]

Kaul received a Bachelor of Arts from American University, master's degrees from Brown University and Johns Hopkins University.[4][8][9]

Kaul is multilingual and is fluent in several languages including Dari and Arabic.[10][4]

Career

Kaul has served in various capacities within the U.S. defense and intelligence sectors. She has worked as a Director at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency in the Department of Defense, as a Director of Strategic Communications for the U.S. Air Force and NATO at General Dynamics Information Technology, and as an intelligence political-military expert at the U.S. Central Command.[11][12]

As the former Director of Strategic Communications at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, Kaul was responsible for managing national security communication strategies.[13] Additionally, she served as Chief of the Political-Military Intelligence Night Cell for the Department of Defense's ISIS Crisis Group under Secretary Lloyd Austin at US Central Command, focusing on defense strategies during a critical conflict period.[13] Her work in these roles has been centered around national security and defense policy.[14]

In December 2023, Kaul announced that she would run for the 10th Congressional District of Virginia as a Democratic Party candidate.[15][16] On the first quarter of her campaign, she raised over $604,000[17] and announced to have over $567,000 in cash on hand.[18]
