Kanysh Imantayevich Satpayev (Kazakh: Қаныш Имантайұлы Сәтбаев — is one of the founders of Soviet metallogeny, principal advocate and the first president of Kazakhstan Academy of Sciences. He was born on March 30 (April 11), 1899 in Bayanaul district of Pavlodar Province. He died on January 31, 1964 in Moscow and is buried in Almaty.

Biography

Satpayev's interest in geology was sparked in childhood by Tomsk geologist Mikhail Usov. In 1921, he got admitted to Tomsk Technological Institute (now Tomsk Polytechnic University). After completing studies in 1926, Satpayev returns back to Kazakhstan.


Legacy

Kanish Satpayev left after himself more than 640 scientific publications. He created Institute of Geology which became the center of studies of Kazakhstan mineral resources.

Satpaev city in Karagandy Province is named after Kanysh Satpaev as well as the water channel Irtysh-Karaganda, mineral Satpaevite (6Al (OH)3×3v (O2OH)×2v {O (OH)2}), and numerous streets and schools in Kazakhstan. One of the planets of the solar system in the Taurus constellation, # 2402 in the World Planet Catalogue, is named after him [1].
