Theatre credits

Probably best known for his portrayal of Edward Fairfax Rochester in the Broadway musical of Jane Eyre (2000-12-102001-06-10), Barbour began his Broadway career in the ensemble of Cyrano – The Musical (1993-11-211994-03-20). Among his numerous Broadway credits, James has portrayed the Beast in Disney's Beauty and the Beast (opposite Toni Braxton) and played Leon Czolgosz in the revival of Stephen Sondheim's Tony award winning musical Assassins.

Barbour has also spent a significant amount of time performing in Los Angeles. On the west coast stage, he has been Lancelot to Jeremy Irons' King Arthur in Camelot at the Hollywood Bowl, as well as originating such critically acclaimed roles as Callahan in the new musical Lizard at The NoHo Arts Center.

In late 2007, he performed the role of Sydney Carton in a world premiere pre-Broadway musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities at the historic Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota, Florida.[1]

Barbour has been cast as Sydney Carton in the Broadway musical adaptation of 'A Tale of Two Cities' opening for preview on August 19, 2008 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in New York[2].

Solo career

Barbour performed Back From Broadway, which he developed with Hershey Felder, to sold out crowds as it toured the U.S.[citation needed]

He co-founded Laughing Dog Entertainment with Steve Binder.[3]

Personal life

Barbour has attended, performed at, and even hosted Scientology based events,[4][5] such as the star-studded grand opening of their Mission in Santa Monica, CA,[6] and a Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) gala at the Beverly Wilshire in February of 2006. [7]

Barbour is married to fellow performer Dana Stackpole. [8] The couple first met during the revival of Carousel at Lincoln Center, when Barbour took over the part of Billy Bigelow, and Ms. Stackpole played his daughter, Louise.

In April of 2006, Barbour was arrested and charged with sex abuse and sodomy for having inappropriate relations with a female minor four years prior.[9][10][11] In the Fall of 2006, he was indicted by a grand jury in New York for said crime.[12][13][14][15][16] In January 2008, Barbour pleaded guilty to two misdemeanour counts of endangering the welfare of a minor in exchange for a lesser sentence of 60 days in jail and three years probation. Also, in accordance with his plea bargain, Barbour, under oath, made a public allocution admitting to his felonious acts. [17][18][19]

On February 29, 2008, Barbour began his sixty-day jail sentence at Rikers Island and three years probation. [20]
