Indiggo (Twins[1][2]) are Gabriela and Mihaela Modorcea,[3][4] the multi-talented singers,[3] songwriters,[3] composers,[3][2][5][4] dancers,[3][6][7] choreographers,[7] actresses,[3][8][9] writers,[3] dance teachers,[10][11] and reality television personalities,[1] and the creators and performers of Wicked Clone The Cinema Musical.[7]

They wrote, composed, choreographed, designed and perform their Off Broadway play Wicked Clone The Cinema Musical (2018), "a rare piece of visual and audio creativity."[7] Basing the show on their 500-page bestseller Wicked Clone or how to deal with the evil, they twist vampire lore by telling the story of a vampire bitten by a human being.[7] The show features a mystical story,[12] epic film projections from beginning till the end,[13] 21 of their "immortal" original compositions[7][12] "fearless" dancing[12] and a symphonic soundtrack.[7]

A sample of their single "La La La" has been featured on American rappers Kanye West and Jay-Z's studio album, Watch the Throne (2011),[1] while fellow releases "Hip Hop Jam" (2003) and "Be My Boyfriend" (2006) experienced commercial success in Germanic territories.[14][15] Their signing with international music label Imagem in 2011 consists of a worldwide, multi-year publishing/grand rights deal.[2][4]

They were born in Romania.[3] In 2006, Mihaela and Gabriela Modorcea played the lead parts Louise and Henriette in the musical "Cele doua orfeline" (English: "The Two Orphans").[16][17] In 2006, they competed to represent Romania at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing 7th out of 12 songs in the National Final.[18] In 2008, they qualified for the top-40 semi-finals on Season 3 of America's Got Talent.[19] They became Americans in 2013.[5][20][21] They are members of ASCAP.[22][23] They teach "Hip Hop Belly Dancing," ranked best-in-class by Time Out New York.[10][11]

Biography

Family

The twins' father is Grid Modorcea.[24] He is a writer,[3] journalist,[25] author, filmmaker[24] and critic.[26] He has a Doctor of Arts[3] from the National University of Theater and Cinematography in Bucharest.[24] He worked for 30 years as a film producer and screen writer at the National Cinematography and at the Romanian National Television, writing 96 books and making over 50 films.[25]

Their mother is Violeta Modorcea.[24] She is a writer.[27][28] She is the author of Complementary theatrical visions: Chekhov and Gorky (her PhD Thesis) through which she imposed the concept of artistic complementarity.[29] She has translated Mongolian,[30][31] Russian[32] and American[33] literature. She is a teacher of world literature with a PhD in philology.[3][24]

They have an older brother, Vlad, who is a game producer.[3]

The Twins

The twin sisters were born in 1985[34][35][9] in Brașov, Transylvania, Romania.[3] Mihaela is five minutes older than Gabriela.[36] The twins began studying piano, guitar,[23] canto and dance at the age of six.[3] They made their professional debut at the age of 12, on Christmas Eve, on Romanian Television with the carol "Colinde, colinde," written by Mihai Eminescu, generally regarded as Romania's greatest poet.[37] Mihaela and Gabriela constantly performed on the most popular German and European TV shows and received major media support by “BILD,” the best selling newspaper in Europe.[3]

In 2006, Mihaela released her first poetry book Rage and Love[3][38] and was acclaimed as one of the most original poets in her native country.[3] The sisters graduated from the Theatre Department of the National University of Theatre and Film "I.L.Caragiale" (named in honor of Ion Luca Caragiale) in Bucharest, Romania, both with an average of 10 (the highest score[37]).[17][39][8][9] They are the first twin actresses in the history of the Romanian theater.[17]

After graduation, Indiggo went to Germany to record "I do not need Georgie Clooney, I do not need David Beckham," composed by their producer, Dieter Bohlen.[17] They studied acting in Germany and later in New York.[39][8][40] In the United States, they guest starred on The Tyra Banks show, “TMZ,” “The Happy Hour”/FOX Business and “Hair Battle Spectacular”/Oxygen.[3] They also performed in advertisements for Dell Computers, NY Knicks promos, Vodka Gorbatschow, in music videos alongside actors Danny Aiello, Lindsay Lohan, music icons 50 Cent and Kanye West.[3]

The Modorceas became American citizens in October 2013 and performed The Star-Spangled Banner at the ceremony accompanying the taking of their oath.[5][20] They speak English, French, German and Romanian and can sing in seven different languages.[3] They are members of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).[22][23] They live in New York City.[3][9]

Gabriela and Mihaela created and teach "Hip Hop Belly Dancing" at a dance studio in the Flatiron District in New York City.[10][11] Time Out New York ranked "Hip Hop Belly Dance" as best-in-class.[11] Their class crosses traditional belly dancing with modern hip-hop dance, teaching a fun dance routine while focusing on building sexy arms and lean legs.[10]

Wicked Clone The Cinema Musical

Wicked Clone The Cinema Musical, Indiggo's Off Broadway show, opened March 8, 2018, at the Davenport Theatre with five performances a week.[41] The show is based on Mihaela's 500-page bestseller Wicked Clone or how to deal with the evil,[7][42] a cinema novel.[6][43][44] The original storyline, based on a conflict between the twins,[42] begins in 15th century Transylvania, with the birth of identical twin sisters Mihaela and Gabriela, and tracks Mihaela, whose desire to be human and loved takes her to modern day New York City; and Gabriela, who ventures through time and space to return her sister to her vampiric heritage.[7]

Working on their project since 2010,[6] they wrote, composed, choreographed, designed and perform their show.[7] Mihaela made the costumes.[42] The 90 minute[7] show is a blend of musical theatre and film.[6][43] It features a mystical story,[12] "fearless" dancing,[12] epic film sequences from beginning to end, with much of the film shot in their native Romania,[13] and 21 "immortal" songs[12] from gypsy pop to theatrical hip hop,[7] including "La La La."[42] and "I Am Like God", which invites the audience onstage to sing along.[13]

City Guide’s Theatre Editor Griffin Miller describes the show as “a rare piece of visual and audio creativity” with "totally Transylvanian vogue" costumes, "supernatural ambience, unique staging and ... immortal" performances that "turns the tables on tradition by telling ‘the story of a vampire bitten by a human being,’” and says, "this wildly inventive show—involving singing, dancing, time-travel, film, and a symphonic soundtrack—beckons theatregoers to the underbelly of Nuevo Entertainment."[7]

They are the first twins to play twins off Broadway.[42] Explaining the eponymous characters,[41] Mihaela says, "For the first time the heroes of a novel are heroes in real life, attempting to change the world just like the characters are trying to."[45] They opened an earlier version October 29, 2017, at St. Luke's Theatre.[13] On September 8, 2016, they showcased Wicked Clone at the Elektra Theatre.[46][43] On June 21, 2012, Indiggo presented a first version of their musical play "Wicked Clone," based on an eponymous short story published in 2011 by Mihaela, at the Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York City.[23]

Music

In 2000, MediaPro Music released their first CD album Indiggo,[23] which spanned several hit singles such as "Nu-mi pasa," "Clar de luna," "Am eu grija de mine."[47] Indiggo sold in over 20 countries in Europe, including Germany, Switzerland and Austria.[23] Their unique style, inspired by Romanian folklore, is seen by many as "ambassadors of the great Romanian traditions."[23] Indiggo's first Europe-wide single, CD Maxi "Hip Hop Jam," (BROS Music, 2003), a song with Cuban influences produced by David Brandes, topped the charts in several countries, including Germany,[14] Switzerland, and Austria.[15]

In 2006, without a management company or record label, Indiggo persuaded Germany's pop-titan,[48] TV personality and musician Dieter Bohlen to write "Be My Boyfriend."[49] On February 24, they qualified for the National Final of the Romanian qualifications for the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 and, on February 26, performing "Be My Boyfriend," they finished 7th.[18] On March 10, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Ariola, released the pop/rock CD single “Be My Boyfriend,”[50] which entered the top of the charts.[15]

In August 2011, rappers Jay-Z and Kanye West, “kings of hip hop," released their first collaborative album, ‘’Watch the Throne’’.[1] The New York Times describes the first half of ’’Murder to Excellence” as among the most explicitly political music either artist has made.[1] A sample of Indiggo’s “La La La” opens “Murder to Excellence.”[51][52] Complex Music's Kathy Iandola says “La La La” is a "tribal pop track" that becomes "haunting" as Jay-Z and Kanye West discuss the rise in murder rates and black on black crime.[51] The album liner notes describes Indiggo as “ambassadors of the great Romanian tradition.” [1][22]

In August 2011, international music publisher and label Imagem signed a worldwide, multi-year publishing/grand rights deal with the twins.[2][4][42] Imagem Music, a leader in pop, is a subsidiary of Imagem Music Group, co-founded by CEO André de Raaff and the #1 independent music publishing company in the world.[4] Imagem has contracts with Phil Collins, Ludacris and Genesis.[42]

On December 16, 2011, DAS Label, Inc. released Indiggo's "La La La."[53] Complex Music, a New York City youth culture magazine reporting on trends in music with a focus on hip hop, ranks Indiggo’s “La La La” 18th on the “Best White Girl Vocal Samples in Rap History.”[51] The New York Times' Jon Caramanica describes "La La La" as “moving.”[1]

The twins are working on an album with American music manager DAS Communications' David Sonenberg.[2][4] They have been writing and producing an album, working with Peter Zizzo, Rockwilder, DJ Paul Oakenfold, and Swizz Beatz.[2][4]

Stage, Film and Television

In 2006, Mihaela and Gabriela Modorcea played the lead parts Louise and Henriette in the musical "Cele doua orfeline" (English: "The Two Orphans")[23] at the Casandra Theater,[17] the theatrical studio of the "L. L. Caragiale" National Theater and Cinema Art University.[16] Their performance won the Grand Prix at the Graduates' Gala.[17] Monica Andronescu in Jurnalul National describes the show as a parody and a typical romance where an abandoned child is found after years of suffering and wandering. She continues, ‘An extraordinary explosion of energy and talent sums up the show "The Two Orphans" … it is worth highlighting the interpretation of the two orphans: Mihaela and Gabriela Modorcea, prove, besides acting talent, real musical skills.” [16]

After seeing Mihaela and Gabriela's performance, Romanian playwright D.R. Popescu, former president of the Romanian Writers Union, wrote a play for the twins entitled "Doua Surori," published in the award-winning volume "Domnul Fluture si doamna Fluture."[54][23] Subsequently, Romanian director Mihai Maniutiu cast Mihaela and Gabriela in "Viitorul e in oua" (English: "The Future is in Eggs") by Eugene Ionesco.[55][23] Romanian Alexa Visarion directed them as the Twin Towers in "America Alive," a show in memory of September 11, 2001.[23][56]

Gabriela Modorcea acted in the movie National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj (2006)[57][23] as "Taj's Sister." IGN reviewed the movie, concluding, “Along with the standard frat boy elements comes a small attempt at social commentary.”[58] Mihaela and Gabriela Modorcea acted together in the Russian/American film Lyubov v bolshom gorode[23][57] (“No Love in the Big City"[59]), as "Bliznyashka No. 1." and "Bliznyashka No. 2."[60][59] The New York Times described the film as a "bittersweet comedy-drama from the former Soviet Union"[61]

In 2008, Indiggo qualified for the top-40 Las Vegas semi-finals on Season 3 of America's Got Talent, an American television reality show talent competition.[19] Gabriela appeared on the episode "Hothouse" of the television series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which first aired on NBC on January 13, 2009 as "Veronica Pankovich."[62][63] The series broadcaster, NBC, says the show "chronicles the life and crimes of the Special Victims Unit of the New York City Police Department, an elite squad of detectives who investigate crimes of sexual assault, child abuse and domestic violence."[64]
