Strike effect by type of show

Prime-time series

Mid-season shows, such as Dirt and The Riches, began production after most other TV shows, so they have completed fewer episodes to date. As a result, there will be fewer episodes to air for each of these shows. 24, also airing mid-season, will be postponed due to the serial nature of the show. ABC will have to make a decision regarding whether to air Lost as a non-stop full season after the strike is resolved, or air the current eight episodes that are already finished while putting the rest of the unfinished season on an indefinite hiatus.

For shows without full-season pickups such as Moonlight and Cane, production on the first batch of shows has been completed.

Production for Heroes: Origins has been postponed as a result of the strike.[54][55][56]

Although seven scripts are in for ABC series Cashmere Mafia, the network has delayed the show's premiere date from the original late November premiere.[57]

Scrubs may not be able to air a series finale as only 12 of its 18 order episodes have been written.[58] Creator Bill Lawrence has stated he will either release the final on DVD, as he said in an interview, or will post what would have happened in episodes 13 through 18 on the internet.[59]

NBC is considering airing the original British version of The Office in place of the American version.[60]

Strangely, during the strike, ABC's Dirty Sexy Money was given a full season order. NBC also gave full season orders to Life, and Chuck.

Talk shows

Late night comedy shows such as The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Last Call with Carson Daly, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Late Show with David Letterman, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, Real Time with Bill Maher and Saturday Night Live began airing reruns immediately.[61]

In some cases, networks began to show even older episodes of the series, instead of episodes produced within the last year -- in one case, on November 12, 2007, NBC aired a repeat of The Tonight Show from November 17, 2003, in which Leno refers to Arnold Schwarzenegger being sworn in during the monologue and Britney Spears and James Belushi appeared on the show that day.[62][63] On the week of November 26, The Tonight Show will entirely air "vintage" episodes, starting with a June 29, 1992 appearance by Tom Hanks.[64][65]

The Tonight Show reportedly would resume new episodes beginning November 19, but using guest hosts to fill in for Jay Leno, both of whom refused to cross the picket lines.[43] This did not happen and the show will remain in reruns indefinitely.

On November 27, NBC announced that Last Call with Carson Daly would be the first late night show to go back into production, with episodes taping throughout the week and the first new episode to be aired on December 3 [66].

David Letterman has agreed to pay the writers of The Late Show until the end of the year.[67] Meanwhile, the striking writers have opened their own weblog, lateshowwritersonstrike.com, dealing with the strike and other events.

The Oprah Winfrey Show[68] uses non-union writers, and thus will be unaffected by the strike.

Other

Although many animated series employ union writers, there is no requirement to do so. For instance, the writers of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, are not union members, and the show remains in production.[69]

The strike also does not affect reality shows such as American Idol, whose episodes are unscripted, or news programs, whose writers belong to a different guild.[70] However, newswriters at CBS News and at local CBS owned-and-operated television stations (as well as CBS Radio news entities) are currently subject to a different strike action by WGA which may be authorized November 15. CBS News writers under the WGA have been without a contract with the network since April 2005.[71]

Similarly, some game shows, such as Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? and The Price Is Right, are not affected because they are unscripted; by contrast, Jeopardy! and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire are staffed with WGA writers.[72] New versions of Password and American Gladiators, in addition to other game, contest and reality shows, may launch sooner than originally scheduled in order to minimize the amount of scripted-program reruns.[73]
