Duke Georg of Mecklenburg (5 October 1899 - 6 July 1962) was born Count Georg of Carlow the morganatic son of Duke George Alexander of Mecklenburg (1859-1909) and his wife Natalia Vanljarskaya, Countess of Carlow (1858-1921).

Biography

After the 1917 October Revolution Duke Georg fled Russia for Germany.[1] In 1928 he was adopted by his uncle Duke Charles Michael of Mecklenburg and on 5 October 1928 he legally changed to his name to Georg von Mecklenburg.[2][3]

Following his adoption Georg assumed the title Duke of Mecklenburg with the style Serene Highness, which was confirmed by the head of the House of Romanov, Grand Duke Cyril Vladimirovich of Russia on the 18 July 1929.[4] Georg’s right to the title Duke of Mecklenburg was recognised by the Hereditary Grand-Duke and head of House of Mecklenburg Friedrich Franz on 18 December 1950 who granted the style of Highness.[4]

Georg died on the 6 July 1962 in Sigmaringen of a heart attack.[5]

Duke Georg was married firstly on the 7 October 1920 to Irina Raievskya (1892-1955) in Geneva, Switzerland. They had three children.[3]

In May 1956 Georg became engaged to Archduchess Charlotte of Austria (1921-1989),[6] a daughter of the last Austro-Hungarian Emperor Karl. They were married in a civil ceremony on 21 July 1956 in Pöcking, Germany followed by a religious ceremony four days later.[3]
