Cool American Flavored Doritos found in Amsterdam.

Doritos is a brand of flavored tortilla chips produced since 1961 by the American food company Frito-Lay (a division of PepsiCo, Inc.). Doritos are sold in many countries worldwide in assorted flavors.

The brand is also known for its marketing campaigns, which have included many television commercials featuring the late Avery Schreiber, Jay Leno and actress Ali Landry, as well as product placement in movies such as Wayne's World

Doritos, which translated means "little bits of gold," is made from ground corn, corn oil, and seasoning. The brand name seems to be loosely derived from the Spanish word oro for gold (or dorado for gilded) and the diminutive suffix -ito meaning small (therefore orito without the D would mean little gold). It also rhymes with other Frito-Lay brand names Cheeto, Tostito, and Frito (which is the Spanish word for fried), so the term fits in with the larger corporate theme.

Currently, Doritos is running a campaign called "Doritos X-13D Flavor Experiment" where black, unidentified bags of Doritos are on the market for consumers to identify and name the flavor. The only flavor identification on these chips is "All American Classic."

Slogans

  • 1970s-1980s: "They Taste as Good as They Crunch"
  • Early 1990s: "Crunch All You Want - We'll Make More"
  • Early 1990s: "Bob's Favorite Snack" (Canada)
  • 1998-2004: "The Loudest Taste On Earth"
  • "Bold Taste You Can Play With"
  • 2004-Present: "Play" (Canada)
  • 2005-Present: "Snack Strong" (United States)

International differences

  • United Kingdom and Ireland
    • Only four flavours at a time are sold in small packets others being restricted to large bags. Cool original, Chilli Heatwave and Tangy Cheese are stalwarts of the small packets whilst the fourth flavour tends to change every few years (Currently Sizzling BBQ).
    • Marketed under PepsiCo's "Walkers" brand name rather than PepsiCo's "Frito-Lay" brand name.
    • Doritos was sponsor of Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Premier League 2003-04 season.
  • Australia
    • For Christmas 2006, 'Xmas Trees' Doritos have been released in the shape of Christmas trees.
  • Egypt
    • Doritos were produced in Egypt until approximately 1995 and were then reintroduced in 2006 with two flavors: Cheese & Spices (orange packet) and Sweet Chilli Pepper (blue packet).
  • Germany
    • Doritos are available in three flavors: Nacho Cheese (orange bag), Cool American (similar to the Doritos Ranch flavor found in the US, light blue bag) and Texas Paprika (Texas Bell Pepper). They are manufactured and distributed by Frito Lay's Dutch arm, Smith's Food Group B.V. in Maarssen.

Doritos in popular culture

  • Jay Leno endorsed Doritos in several television commercials in the 1980s prior to his tenure as host of The Tonight Show in 1992.
  • The A-12 Avenger II, an attack aircraft under development for the US Navy in the late 1980s was nicknamed the "Flying Dorito" on account of its triangular shape.[citation needed]
