File:Louis A. McCall, Sr.jpg listed for deletion

I just read the notice you sent me on September 9, 2012 about this file being tagged for deletion by it looks like a bot for an invalid PD tag and the link to the discussion if I didn't want it deleted, but it looks like it was already deleted. Can I ask what was invalid about it's PD tag and how long is it usually between a bot tagging a file for deletion and it being deleted? Kmanblue (talk) 07:17, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I don't remember the specifics of that file. Later today I'll have an admin look at it and give me the details, and then get back to you. As to the second part of the question, deletion discussions last for one week. Sven Manguard Wha? 18:22, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Did you ever find out why this file was deleted? Kmanblue (talk) 02:41, 24 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You used a custom PD template with the reasoning "No expressed copyright was ever asserted". Copyright comes into play the moment the work is either taken or published, depending on the jurisdiction; it does not need to be asserted. Therefore the file was not PD. Sven Manguard Wha? 22:20, 25 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

hello)

excuse me, please. i just happened across the file Desnianskyi Raion Central Clinic.jpg and have denied access for your bot to it, as the attribution license is not right to be applied here, it seems. it is "all rights reserved" and there is not a word about allowing commercial use anyway on the site. am i to nominate the file for the deletion? even if a photographer is all right with releasing his work into public domain, we (Ukraine) do not have freedom of panorama... or is there some kind of a fairuse license to use? i am not an active user here, so some tricky situations usually catch me off guard) but i do not see any reason to move it to commons, where it will be deleted all the same... and just some needless work done(( --antanana 18:11, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

So the bot, being a program, can't really tell if a license is accurate or not. I, being a non-Ukranian speaker, can't really verify anything myself. My thinking, however, is this: If the building itself was commissioned/built by the government of the city of Kiev, then the government of the city of Kiev does in fact have the right to release that image, because even without freedom of panorama the government of the city of Kiev still owns the copyright. It's tricky, especially since the source link doesn't exist and wayback doesn't cover it, but my gut feeling is to leave it as is. Sven Manguard Wha? 23:53, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
i do know the bot's limits) run one myself. that's why i wanted to talk to a person made of "flesh and blood", so to say)) we do not download such images to commons, keep them locally only and tag them with "NoCommons|nofop". and maybe there was written smth like "you-may-use-the-materials-but-you-are-to-mention-us" before, but it won't really do as an attribution, as there is no "for-whatever-reason-you-want". or at least i was told there should be such a clear statement included. and i agree, actually... but i am glad i am not to nominate it for a deletion, by the way. kind of treason it would feel anyway... thanks) and sorry for all the trouble --antanana 09:44, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Guidance on slowly rolling out pending changes

Regarding this edit:

Yes, but because I have no confidence that without such a statement, PC will be applied rapidly and somewhat carelessly by some of its staunchest opponents.

Literally, I think the statement is saying that unless a statement on slowly rolling out pending changes is made, you do not believe pending changes will be applied rapidly and somewhat carelessly by those who oppose pending changes. In other words, you believe pending changes will not be applied rapidly and somewhat carelessly by those who oppose it? Did you mean to say that you believe without such a statement, pending changes will be applied rapidly and somewhat carelessly by some of its staunchest proponents (supporters)? - Isaacl 18:13, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing that out. Sven Manguard Wha? 18:52, 2 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Free copy of Civilization V for an FA

This contest is now over. The free copy of Civilization V was won by Futuretrillionaire for bringing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to Featured Article status.
Do you want a free copy of Civilization 5?

As part of a Steam pre-order deal for XCOM: Enemy Unknown I have just received a free copy of Civilization V, a top notch turn-based strategy game. Because I already owned a copy, I am free to gift the new one to anyone with a steam account. That anyone can be you.

Below is a list of some of my favorite games that are of C class or below. I will give my copy of Civilization V to the first user that brings any of the following articles to FA status:

If none of the articles above have made it to at least the stage of a good faith Featured article candidates run by the end of the year, I will expand the list to include some of my favorites that are ranked B or above:

If none of the articles from the first section make it to the stage of a good faith Featured article candidates run by the end of the year, but one of articles from the second was promoted before the end of the year, the nominator will instantly become eligible to claim my copy of Civilization V. If no game on either of the two lists makes it to FA status by April 6, 2013 (six months from the start of this competition) I will give my copy of Civilization V to the first user that brings any role playing or strategy game to FA status.

You must leave me a message on my user talk page in order to claim the prize.

Disclaimers: I only have one copy, so if you're going to work with someone else, you need to decide ahead of time who gets the game. I can only deliver the game via Steam. By receiving the game, you agree to never disclose any information that Steam transmits along with the game. I haven't read the terms of service closely enough to know if this transaction is a violation of them. If for any reason I lose the ability to gift the game, I am under no obligation to replace it; the competition is simply canceled. I reserve the right to add more games to the above lists.

Good luck. Sven Manguard Wha? 02:22, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. I am aware that some people will dislike this because it gets too close to "paid editing". I have no affiliation with anyone involved in any of these games. The selection was (essentially) completely arbitrary. The idea itself came about only because I had the game through the pre-order. If it were a different game that I recieved, I would be offering a different game. Please don't bombard my talk page if you think this is a bad idea; simply choose not to participate.

OTRS Question

I was curious if you could give me some more information regarding this edit summary. I don't have an account so I can't see what the problem is with the ticket. -Thibbs (talk) 17:23, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Very nice idea above, by the way. If I had more time (and a Steam account) I'd be quite tempted. If you'd like to move this message of mine above the contest in order to highlight it better then please feel free. -Thibbs (talk) 17:23, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
They gave us permission to use the logo on Wikipedia, but balked at releasing the logo under a free license. Since 'Wikipedia use only' is not an acceptable restriction, we cannot consider the ticket valid or the image freely licensed. Sven Manguard Wha? 17:47, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Thanks for clearing that up. -Thibbs (talk) 18:26, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Commons

Sven, I'd also like you to consider the approach currently being taken on Commons by Fastily. Having already threatened me on my own Commons talk page, insulted me (and left a snide comment in the edit summary), he has now stalked me to Deniss's talk page and continued to harrass me further with smears. Could you perhaps drop a friendly word in his shell-like that he could perhaps refrain from the continued ad hominem attacks before feelings start getting overheated and out of control? Many thanks - SchroCat (^@) 12:46, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sudeki

Hi Sven,

I saw your free game offer. I'm not a PC gamer (my gaming consists of playing games from a large library of PS1/PS2 games, I'm stuck in the damn past, I know) but I thought I'd have a shot at some basic improvements to some games articles. From your list, I saw that Sudeki had no references. It now does. Thanks for nudging me to edit something out of my usual areas. Good luck with the running of the contest. —Tom Morris (talk) 12:46, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome to hear. Sudeki is in poorer shape than most of those articles. Sven Manguard Wha? 15:24, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. Thanks for the encouragement on the contest. I will consider it a success if someone claims the prize. Everything else is just personal preference. Sorry that there are no PS1/PS2 games on the list, my first console was an N64 and I've never owned any of the PlayStations.

Talk page stalkers: Check out these main page redesign proposals

I don't care how you vote, or even if you oppose my submission, but I would like to see the straw poll at Wikipedia talk:2012 main page redesign proposal/Straw Poll October 2012 get more participation from experienced editors with good taste (i.e. the kind of people who watchlist my page). Wikipedia Loves Libraries (BPL Dorchester)

Hey Sven. I was just browsing through the Boston area meetups, and I saw the event on 10 Nov at the Dorcester branch didn't have a page yet. Is that a for-certain event, or is it still up in the air? I'd love to come and participate at one of the events, but I'm scheduled to work during the others. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks! Ishdarian 05:56, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It now has a page. See Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston Public Library/Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012 for details. Hope to see you there. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:58, 15 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

I just want to say that(thanks to the VG Newsletter) I am thinking about entering your contest, using Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones as my article of choice. I don't have a deep history with Fire Emblem, only playing Shadow Dragon, but my brother loves this game and has been begging me to play it for forever. I find it sad that this article has barely been touched in 3 years, only having routine maintenance and the addition of a simple Development section. Blake (Talk·Edits) 03:52, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That's good to hear. Shadow Dragon wasn't nearly as good, in my opinion, as either of the two GBA Fire Emblem games, which have smaller casts of characters, and therefore can expend the time to build up the characters, and their personalities, much more. The two GBA ones are also much more tactically complex. You should enjoy them if you like turn based games. Sven Manguard Wha? 23:31, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

important updates at Messi's page

there is important discussion about messi's page at [footbal]

the discussion about :

1-adding back the assists which have been removed ( and i think its really important ) especially most notable players have it and even less known player than messi have this statistics which is important for any striker .(remember the debate about messi vs ronalod have lots about messi makes more assists than ronaldo )

2-adding back the youth and under -23 goals because they are different statistics from senior one and u cant merge them together . since fifa themself separate them differently .

3-about the table of messi goals and if its important info or just long statistics(useless one).

Thank you all . adnantalk 12 pm 16 october 2012 (UTC)

I will not be getting involved in this. Furthermore, if you're going to deliver a mass invitation to participate in a discussion, you must refrain from making judgements and trying to sway the discussion in the invitation itself. Otherwise you're canvassing. Sven Manguard Wha? 20:02, 16 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Page Curation newsletter - closing up!

Hey all :).

We're (very shortly) closing down this development cycle for Page Curation. It's genuinely been a pleasure to talk with you all and build software that is so close to my own heart, and also so effective. The current backlog is 9 days, and I've never seen it that low before.

However! Closing up shop does not mean not making any improvements. First-off, this is your last chance to give us a poke about unresolved bugs or report new ones on the talkpage. If something's going wrong, we want to know about it :). Second, we'll hopefully be taking another pass over the software next year. If you've got ideas for features Page Curation doesn't currently have, stick them here.

Again, it's been an honour. Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 11:59, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ada

Hey Sven, I figured continuing the conversation there was a little bit moot, but that's great! I think most of the stuff coming out of Ada day didn't make it to DYK, but at least there's a lot more bluelinks. =] It's inspired me to go raid the library for obscure biographical dictionaries of female scientists, at the very least! Keilana|Parlez ici 01:08, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cool. I wish you luck in that endeavor. Sven Manguard Wha?

XCOM:EU

Expansion tag was arbitrary (one user thought it's not enough, while I think it's enough, and I've seen no sources discuss it any further anyway, and I didn't play the game while all the others thousands users every day also didn't write even one more word there) and is not listed among the quick-fail tags.

Now go and re-nominate. --Niemti (talk) 08:55, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

My one word answer wasn't an attempt at being cute, it was my attempt at responding to you without saying anything I might regret. If you want my cooperation, ordering me to do something isn't going to get it. At this point, it's worth mentioning, you could act quite nicely and I still wouldn't do it; any chance of us having a functional working relationship ended with your last post, I want nothing further to do with you. Sven Manguard Wha? 22:16, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

On new accounts

When you ran for administrator a while back, I knew that you had a previous account (per your disclosure) but didn't know which account it was, and didn't ask. I had (and have) no idea whether it was a clean start, an RTV that you changed your mind about, or what. I supported your candidacy regardless, based on your positive contributions with your current account. I'm sure you recall that other, less trusting editors opposed your candidacy because of the previous account.

To have you then turn around and ask a loaded, insulting question like this to another editor during their RfA feels like a bit of a slap in the face, to be honest. 28bytes (talk) 22:50, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The difference between a cleanstart and an RTV is that a cleanstart doesn't bury evidence. Sure, you can have your userpage deleted, but the talk page is always there where it was left, the edit history of articles is never changed, and it's the account is still searchable. When someone uses RTV they all but disappear. It's a process many people don't even know about, it edits article histories, it deletes talk pages, it makes searching the user almost impossible if you don't already know what the rename was to. In short, RTV is tremendously powerful. That's why it's explicit that someone never comes back from a cleanstart, and implicit that if they do, they unhide their old account immediately. Abusing RTV hurts the project because Wikipedia is built on transparent attribution, and that is only broken in extreme and rare cases. There is no way that Rlevse's flagrant abuse of RTV can be framed in any other way than that he was being unethical and manipulating process. Yes, that question was loaded and hostile. That was intentional. That don't regret that, because I don't trust him, and I don't trust that he won't dodge the question if I give him any room to do so. Sven Manguard Wha? 23:19, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
One day, when there's not an RfA from a RTV abuser running, I'd be willing to share the reason why I'm so hostile to people that abuse RTV, and why Rlevse in particular set off my hostility so strongly. As odd as this might sound to you, I don't want to poison the RfA by bringing in an incident which, as far as I know, Rlevse was only minorly involved in. Sven Manguard Wha? 23:25, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate the considered response. Thank you as well for this conciliatory edit. For now, let me just say that I look forward to meeting again on a talk page in happier circumstances. Best, 28bytes (talk) 23:36, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Hi Sven!

Continuing the thanks for your conciliatory edits, I want to thank you for graciously reconsidering the "grow a pair" issue. About the remaining MF issue, I understand that at times I am an irritant, particularly when confined to ArbCom-related pages, etc. However, I wouldn't like to be accused of irritating "everyone", and I have far less thank yous on my talk page then MF.

Ah! No worries. A long time ago someone removed the image in a random act of vandalism, I believe. I thought its recent absence was yet another act of vandalism. My mistake. Cheers and good luck on rewriting the article!Pericles of AthensTalk 05:15, 24 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oblivion, er, umm, Civilization V awaits?

Hey Sven, was stopping by the Reward Board to add my contest and stumbled upon yours. I decided that, being a fan of the game, Oblivion would be a nice choice to improve to FA. Seeing that the article is within a kilobyte of its size at the end of its fifth FAC I'll start working on fixing errors listed here. I realize I have some competition, but it's not that important if I get the game.

Thanks for the extra content (I've approved it), but I wasn't trying to force you to find extra information. Rather, I had assumed that you'd add little bits of text here and there, e.g. "Additionally, " at the start of the final sentence or "their " before "structural limits".
