Proposed deletion[edit]

I object to the proposed deletion of this page on the basis of its lack of significance. On the contrary, this is a signature song by one of the most significant musical theater performers of the late 20th century, and is associated with one of the most successful and significant musical theater productions of the latter 20th century. The usefulness of the entry is reflected by the fact that mere moments after the proposal for deletion was made, the page was referenced. It provides a concise contextualization of the song, along with some moderately interesting commentary. The entry could be improved with additional information, but its significance should not be in question.

Notability[edit]

I'm hoping that this article meets notability and is referenced well enough (at least for starters) that it survives. It may not have been enough for Neil Diamond to have released it as a single in 1987, but Susan Boyle has drawn enough attention to it for Patti LuPone's version to chart based on downloads. I have this sinking feeling that a swarm of people will see this and pull out their "proposed" or "speedy" delete weapons, but at least I tried being bold and doing this as well as I can. Zephyrnthesky (talk) 05:08, 27 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This absolutely deserves to be an article, and did before Boyle's performance or LuPone's recharting. Both as a show-stopping number from a major musical and as a major market chart single in 1987, this already had notability. So cast off that sinking feeling, Zephyrnthesky! Good work! Abrazame (talk) 00:34, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Abrazame, for the reassurance. I just sort of had this feeling that somebody would have come along and not thought it notable enough (that is, until Susan Boyle probably releases her hit version later this year). Double thanks for your and Sceptre's additions to the article - I was confident numerous other artists had covered the song, but Google was all-consumed with Susan when I searched it. Excellent job! Maybe this article will make DYK after all. Zephyrnthesky (talk) 03:26, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree 100% with Abrazame's post above. This song is clearly notable ... not only before Susan Boyle sparked re-interest in it ... but certainly after she did so. This article is well done ... and, it goes without saying, this song is beautiful. Thanks. (Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 10:21, 29 May 2009 (UTC))[reply]
I detailed information on the lead for the musical's article relating the impact of this song. This article helped greatly in that task B.s.n. R.N. 15:38, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ground bass[edit]

The article has no analysis of the music of the song. It is unusual in that it uses a classical music technique called "ground bass", something rarely used in musicals. In ground bass the lower-pitched instruments repeat a phrase over and over while the melody varies. A classical example is Henry Purcell's "When I am laid in earth" from the opera DIDO AND AENEAS. It seems to be associated with laments, because the contrast between repeated base and changing melody can create the impression of struggling against an inexorable fate.50.180.19.238 (talk) 11:51, 16 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I Dreamed a DreamI Dreamed a Dream (song) – To allow for I Dreamed a Dream (disambiguation) to be moved to this title. There are now 4 notable articles with this title.Edinburgh Wanderer 21:43, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Slight oppose: this page has a majority of page views of the four pages according to stats.grok.se. Additionally, the song lends its name to the other three pages. For that reason, I would lean towards keeping this here as it is a primary topic, see also This Woman's Work. Sceptre (talk) 21:05, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Its difficult to gauge the stats as this time as one of the pages has only just been created. I Would also argue that this page until yesterday only linked to one of the other pages, which means the other was more difficult to locate so page views would be less. Im just pointing out that the stats don't prove the whole picture. Edinburgh Wanderer 21:43, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Meaningful titles are a good thing, right? And vague or confusing titles are useless. Me, I like useful titles. (Some things in life are surprisingly simple. Add seven characters for an obvious benefit with no harm? Gets my vote!) NoeticaTea? 00:31, 30 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. The dubious value of "meaningful titles" aside, it should go without saying that the concept of WP:PRIMARYTOPIC has broad community consensus support, but because some people disruptively refuse to accept this, it needs to be stated explicitly, apparently. That said, unless we have evidence to the contrary, which currently we don't, this topic is primary and should continue to be titled accordingly. --Born2cycle (talk) 23:11, 31 March 2012 (UTC) Clarification: Apparently this statement has been misunderstood to mean that I think that supporting this move is disruptive. That is not what I think nor is it what I intended to convey. --Born2cycle (talk) 03:27, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I hope you aren't accusing me of disruptively refuse to accept this.Edinburgh Wanderer 23:20, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm talking about people who refuse to accept that the concept of primary topic is clearly favored and supported by community consensus. I haven't seen you say anything that indicates that's true about you, not here, or elsewhere. I see no point in explicitly naming the people to whom I'm referring. --Born2cycle (talk) 23:35, 31 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And i wouldn't ask you to but thats the way your original comment strongly came across. Thanks for clarifying.Edinburgh Wanderer 00:05, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Born2cycle, please stop accusing of disruption anyone who disagrees with you. What is consensus and what you claim as consensus are not the same. We might have hoped that being named with a specific warning in an Arbcom decision (along with archsockpuppeteer Pmanderson, your ally who has now been banned) would be sufficient to bring about a change. See that it is, please. NoeticaTea? 01:03, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • Noetica, it's not just my opinion that WP:PRIMARYTOPIC has consensus support. You, on the other hand, think it does "great harm"[1]. --Born2cycle (talk) 01:10, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose -- this is the clear primary topic for the title -- the other three entries are based on Boyle's performance of this song. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 01:35, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Inbound link counts, page view counts, and the nature of the relation between the pages (all of the others are derived directly or indirectly from this one) suggest that this is the primary topic. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 15:05, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Several notable uses of this title. Neotarf (talk) 16:42, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support – the rationale for calling this topic primary for this ambiguous title is flimsy. Disclaimer: I am one who does see value in "meaningful titles", and sees the value of reducing ambiguity and increasing precision in titling, sometimes by using parenthetical extra info in a conventional and informative way as proposed here, though I don't support extra info when it's not needed. Dicklyon (talk) 18:25, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Seems like out of the 4 options on the disambig page, this is clearly the primary topic, from which the other three take their name. Can't speak for the wider world, of course... --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 18:33, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What provision at WP:PRIMARYTOPIC are you trying to allude to here? I don't see anything about what takes its name from what. Dicklyon (talk) 21:46, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
"A topic is primary for a term, with respect to long-term significance, if it has substantially greater enduring notability and educational value than any other topic associated with that term." It is unlikely that Susan Boyle's fame will outlive the song -- can you say who the singers were who premiered Tosca?--SarekOfVulcan (talk) 22:11, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose this is clearly the primary topic. The other three have taken the name from the song. In addition, the song page has more views in the last 30 days than the other three combined. JDDJS (talk) 21:25, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose, at this time, assuming reported stats are accurate. If stats change, because of linking or whatever, issue should be revisited, of course. Also, re discussion, please note WP:PERSONAL. ENeville (talk) 02:07, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Obscure Japanese Cover[edit]

How is this notable? Maybe this belongs on the Japanese wikipedia?216.96.229.48 (talk) 18:33, 14 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cover versions[edit]

The extensive list of cover versions seems a bit excessive to me. Also, calling cast recordings "covers" bugs me. Should we just cut the list from the infobox altogether, especially as it's unsourced? --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 16:08, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
