Fair use rationale for image use on Pit of despair[edit]
Description: The Stephens book says: "Rhesus monkey infant in an isolation chamber. The photograph was taken when the chamber door was raised for the first time after half a year of 'total isolation'." The isolation chamber was one of Harry Harlow's.
Rationale for use in pit of despair: The image is an iconic one from a famous series of experiments conducted by psychologist Harry Harlow, who died in 1981. It has no commercial value that would be affected by our use; it is being used for educational purposes in articles about Harlow and his experiments; there is no way to obtain a free-license equivalent; and we have no reason to believe the copyright holder would object.
