The Castle Post is located in Versailles, Kentucky, west of Lexington, Kentucky. It is formally located on 203 Pisgah road (home to Smarty Jones, Funny Cide and Big Brown, all Kentucky Derby winners) but is visually situated off Lexington (Versailles) road. The Castle Post overlooks the Elkhorn Creek watershed on the Woodford/Fayette county line.

History

It was built in the 1970s by Rex and Caroline Martin after they returned from a vacation in Germany. The castle was not complete when, in 1975, the Martins divorced. In 1988 Rex Martin put it on the market, but died before it was sold. In 2003 the so-called "Martin Castle" was sold for 1.8 million dollars to Thomas R. Post, a wealthy lawyer of property tax (University of Kentucky) from Miami, and the name was changed to "The Castle Post". In May, 2004, it was partially destroyed by fire during a lightning storm; it took over six years to rebuild. In early 2010 it was turned into a refurnished bed and breakfast as well as a wedding area. In November of 2010 Thomas Post put it on the market once again for around 30 million dollars.

Recent

It is a popular tourist attraction, but has been locally ridiculed because of the lack of effort put into the landscaping. It has also been ridiculed by an unknown member of Queen Elizabeth II's entourage, calling it "a Micky Mouse castle". Within the castle is a basketball court, a tennis court, a swimming pool, a hot-tub, and a bar.
