Radiosoul dark mode error

Hello! I noticed while browsing that wikilinks in infoboxes are no longer visible with dark mode on. I've also observed this issue on several other pages, including Keir Starmer and Paint It Black. This issue only seems to affect certain infobox parameters (i.e. headings). SupremeLordBagel (talk) 23:17, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I've also noticed similar info box issues: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPNE1 Almost everything in the infobox on this page is invisible. Largely Legible Layman (talk) 23:41, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dark mode interferes with the color of the images (in this instance, the illustrations of the uniform colors on the sidebar). In dark mode, the illustrations are the same dark gray shade as the background. In light mode, the proper colors are displayed.

This is a problem for all pages that use this uniform display graphic template, including several other NBA All-Star Game pages, as well as those of many US college basketball teams (both men's and women's--e.g.: Indiana Hoosiers men's basketball and UConn Huskies Women's Basketball).

The number of different shades of gray found between the body text, the sidebars, and the extra space on my monitor were distracting. I would much rather all the black is the same.

New dark mode text is too bright

The new experimental dark mode appears to disregard common UX recommendations for dark mode, particularly the default color for text being far too bright.

Specifically, text (#EAECF0) is now significantly brighter compared to the beta version (#DFDEDD), which was more in line with common recommendations for reducing eyestrain. Referencing Material Design's guidelines for dark themes, they recommend using #DEDEDE (white at 87% opacity), which is more suitable for extended reading sessions. Note how close that text color is to the beta version.

While I would prefer to revert to the beta version until this is resolved, doing so causes a white flash on every page load or refresh. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 22:12, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

📢 Preferences dark mode error

[edit]

Issue Description

1. Compared to the Dark Mode Gadget I'd been using, this beta Dark Mode feature is not as dark. It's comparatively more grey and not pure black.

Aside from being brighter than I'd like, LED screens turn off the pixels with pure black, so the Dark Mode feature would draw more power than the Dark Mode gadget. (I don't personally have an LED screen laptop though to really know if it's pure black to turn off pixels).

2. A **new** error is I now can't seem to re-enable the Gadget version of Dark Mode, even when I switch the display back to Light Mode or Automatic prior to enabling the gadget. Newly opened pages only briefly (less than a second) show as dark, but then it's instantly bright.

Short version:

1. Dark Mode is not as dark/black as the Dark Mode Gadget.

2. The Dark Mode gadget cannot seem to be re-enabled after trying the Dark Mode beta feature.

Section of article(s): Global

BlindingDarkness (talk) 02:59, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

EDIT/Update: I was able to re-enable the Gadget by clicking "Dark Mode" in the user menu on the top right, where it now shows pure black again. This is after I tried re-enabling it through the Gadget area of Preferences, when it would only briefly show pages in the pure black I prefer before turning bright incorrectly.

BlindingDarkness (talk) 03:04, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In trying to replicate what I did, I noticed the "dark mode" option in the user menu at the top right is not there if the gadget is disabled, so looks like that option is tied to the Gadget and not the new Beta.

Basically, to re-enable the gadget correctly, it has to be done first in the Preferences Gadget area, and then Dark Mode has to be clicked in the user menu at the top right. I'll continue using the Gadget and try the beta again later to see if it's made darker.

When I'm trying to read the table where the various sources is, the text in these colored (light red, light green, light yellow/lime?) lines/blocks is light grey/white (I can't tell...) and is very difficult to read.

The solution would be that these blocks/lines are way more darker colored (in dark mode, if possible), so it is definitely easier on the eyes and definitely easier to read. Hope that helps. I hope I didn't missed anything I could change. Thanks, MtrdCtchr (talk) 12:20, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

📢Infobox album dark mode error

[edit]

Issue Description
On light mode, the headers on this template are a different colour to the usual white (See From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah, where the album title and other headers are coloured orange). This helps to distinguish the headers from the other content, and it is color-coded so that particular types of albums (e.g. live albums or soundtrack albums) have differently coloured headers. On dark mode, this feature is non-existent - everything has the same background colour, making it more difficult to distinguish information. [edit]

Issue Description When companies design a dark mode version of their website, the most important priority is color contrast. The current state of Wikipedia's dark mode keeps blue text from light mode the same color. [edit]

I'm a huge fan of Dark Mode across all platforms, but some do it better than others...unfortunately, y'all have great intentions but the execution suffers..."garish" is the word that comes to mind...the colour choices for the hyperlinks need rethinking amongst other things, a softer "white" for the text would also be something I'd look at, a light gray perhaps? I know you want to keep to your proven theme, but a rethink beofre just reversing the colour palette would be suggested. Good first effort, needs work though.

Additional (general) note

The text in the dark mode is too bright (probably pure white), it hurts the eyes.

IMHO, for comfortable reading in a dark environment (as the dark mode is meant mostly for that), the text should be light grey (not too dark either!). With pure white, the contrast is way too strong, not comfortable for the eyes.

I understand there are some options to customize it, but maybe balancing it slightly better by default is worth considering.

Fix idea: these math symbols need to not flip from black to white. Either manually (some flag set by wiki editor) or automatically (never flip if it's in a box with manually set background).

Great to see the dark mode on Wikipedia, however the color of the links in dark mode can be difficult to read. Here are potential improvements could be done in terms of accessibility:

Horsepower dark mode error

[edit]

Issue Description

Running English Wikipedia in dark mode, most stuff looks pretty great! I do see some diagrams ending up with low contrast such as this SVG diagram snapshotted on the w:Horsepower article:

The text and markings in the image are solid black on a transparent background, which shows through a dark gray from the infobox in dark mode. This ends up difficult to read.

Long-term ideal fix would be to allow SVGs to use theme-aware colors, but this would require some retooling. --Brooke Vibber (WMF) (talk) 14:53, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Added the phab task Jon (WMF) has been working on which would add a background colour to images in dark mode to catch these black lines on a black background bugs. JScherer-WMF (talk) 18:00, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Issue Description The overall points in the championship table for drivers and teams is coloured black on a black background and as a result it is unreadable

Tracked in F1_Drivers_Standings --JScherer-WMF (talk) 17:54, 22 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Issue Description On the title "The sign Post" the text gets highlighted as grey. Also the text "With this adminbot script, a user can be blocked for vandalism, spam, inappropriate or promotional username. If the script is used by admin, he could block user, hide his contribs and delete pages, created by him, with a single click. Non-admin can also cancel a block imposed by him." is hard to read, since it's grey on black.

🐛 Village pump (technical) dark mode error

[edit]

Issue Description In dark mode, at {{Soulfly }}, the actual link for Soulfly is an extremely dark grey that is difficult to see on a black background. Also, when editing, anything that is NOT a link is grey text on a white background. It was not this way before. Does anyone know how to fix this? --Jax 0677 (talk) 21:36, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

❓Search dark mode error

[edit]

Issue Description In search results, the snippets of article text are rendered as white text on a white background.

@Quick and Dirty User Account: Hello, could you please explain the issue you are facing in detail and provide the screenshot if possible (you may upload the screenshot to imgbb.com)? Thanks. --SCP-2000 (talk) 03:56, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for looking into this. I don’t know that I really can describe the issue better in words, but hopefully this screenshot will be worth a thousand of them. Please note that the issue occurs in Firefox. I now have loaded the same search results page in Chrome and Edge, and the background in question renders as black instead of white in those browsers, so the problem may be exclusive to Firefox. I admit that I sorely need to update the version of Firefox that I am using (107.0); therefore, it’s possible that the issue is attributable to that.—Quick and Dirty User Account (talk) 05:06, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Quick and Dirty User Account Thanks for your reply. I'm using the latest version of Firefox and I don't have this problem. So maybe you update your Firefox to the latest version? SCP-2000 (talk) 12:02, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@SCP-2000: Indeed. I did finally update Firefox today to the current version (128.0.2). However, I am still having the search results issue. While the page is loading, those article snippets do briefly appear as white text on a black background, but the background changes to, and then remains, white. Thanks . . . Quick and Dirty User Account (talk) 02:37, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like you have a gadget enabled. I see an "English Wikipedia" dropdown by the search button which is not there by default. Any idea what gadget that is? Maybe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Gadget-PrettyLog.css ? Jdlrobson (talk) 03:12, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Quick and Dirty User Account: Have you tried to using Firefox's private window and safemode? It seems to be a problem with your custom css/js, gadget or Firefox settings/extension. SCP-2000 (talk) 03:14, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your suggestions. @Jdlrobson, I identified the gadget you mentioned; its function is listed as “Add a selector to the Wikipedia search page allowing the use of external search engines”. However, disabling it did not resolve the issue. @SCP-2000, neither using a private window nor running Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode (formerly Safe Mode) fixed the problem either. I also tried changing the website appearance setting in Firefox from automatic to dark; switching the preferred language for displaying pages to different dialects of English; and disabling the extensions and restoring the default theme manually. Additionally, I tried disabling some of the Wikipedia gadgets individually. Nothing changed in regard to the issue.—Quick and Dirty User Account (talk) 10:04, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Update: the backgrounds still come up as white, but the text is now black, so the article snippets are entirely legible. Not sure whether the change was on my end or at the source, but thank you again, @SCP-2000 and @Jdlrobson.—Quick and Dirty User Account (talk) 08:43, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

📢2024 CrowdStrike incident dark mode error

Java version history dark mode error

[edit]

Issue Description This page includes a table of software releases. The first column contains colored boxes (e.g. red for unsupported) and text for the version. On light mode, the text within is black and is quite readable. On dark mode, the text is a light gray and nearly impossible to read, especially in the yellow and green colored boxes. If it could be modified so that it's still readable on dark mode, that would be appreciated.

Also, the last column has several boxes with a `—` in them, which are colored light gray. This looks fine on light mode, but on dark mode it comes across as several cells that are stuck on light mode. Not sure what the solution is to this; maybe just getting rid of the light gray background entirely? –Thunderforge (talk) 18:25, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

🐛"Report an issue with dark mode" doesn't generate the correct title for articles with non-letters

[edit]

Issue Description If the article title has non-letters in it, the "Report an issue with dark mode" doesn't generate a report with the correct title. Reproduction steps:

1. Go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C++

2. Click the "Report an issue with dark mode" link on the article's sidebar, near the light/dark mode settings

3. Observe that the report title is [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C++ C ] dark mode error, which replaces the ++ with two spaces.

In this particular case, it was confusing because there is also a thing called "C" that is related, but distinct from "C++". -Thunderforge (talk) 18:41, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Issue Description This file contains a symbol, an arrow, and the letter A. The symbol and letter A are a dark gray, which are difficult to read on dark mode.

This file is used on 85,716 articles, mostly via the Template:Expand language family of templates. For example Nguyễn Phú Trọng (a recent "In the news" article) has it. 📢Template:Endorsements box dark mode error

[edit]

Issue Description en:Template:Endorsements box does not change when dark mode is enabled (still has white background with black text). This can be seen in the template documentation, see here for an example in a page.

Issue Description Talk pages such as this one (chosen because it's a recent featured article) have a [reply] link after each section. That link is dark blue, which is difficult to see in dark mode. I don't see any reason why it needs to be a different color than the [edit] or [subscribe] links. -Thunderforge (talk) 05:07, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Algebra dark mode error

[edit]

Images with transparent backgrounds may become illegible

An example of this in action is in the English page on Algebra https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebra where the images in the upper right box have formulas with black text, which becomes illegible on a dark background.

Issue Description Dear Wikipedia Team, I am writing to bring your attention to an accessibility issue I noticed in the trigonometry diagram on the page "Exact trigonometric values" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exact_trigonometric_values). The current dark mode version of the diagram has poor visibility of the x and y axis arrows. The black arrows are nearly invisible against the dark background, which significantly reduces the diagram's clarity and usefulness for users viewing the page in dark mode. To address this issue, I suggest:

Changing the color of the axis arrows in the dark mode version to a light color (e.g., white or light gray) to ensure proper contrast. Reviewing other diagrams on the site to ensure they are equally legible in both light and dark modes.

This change would greatly improve the accessibility and readability of the content for all users, particularly those who rely on or prefer dark mode. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Wikipedia's commitment to open knowledge is commendable, and addressing this issue will further enhance the user experience for your global audience.

The issue you're facing with the dark mode version of the trigonometry diagram is that the black arrows representing the x and y axes are not visible against the dark background.
