New Page Patrol December Newsletter[edit]

Wikipedia New page reviewer.svg

Hello Carrite,

A chart of the 2020 New Page Patrol Queue

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Rank Username Num reviews Log

NPP Technical Award.png
Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

Six Month Queue Data: Today – 2262 Low – 2232 High – 10271

Organized labour project[edit]

Thank you for earlier joining the Organized Labour project. I've been a participant in the project since 2006 and am helping with a revival of it. As part this we are introducing a new membership system, which will help with communications among participants. This involves creating a membership file for each participant within your user space (you can see an example of my membership card here: User:Goldsztajn/WikiProjectCards/WikiProject Organized Labour). This system is already in operation within a number of wikiprojects (such as Women in Red and Medicine). You will not have to do anything, myself or someone else from the project will create the relevant file within your userspace. However, I am conscious that it is not polite to change an editor's userspace without notice. If I don't hear from you in the negative, I will go ahead with making the change after the 18th of January. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Many thanks for supporting the project, in solidarity, --Goldsztajn (talk) 20:12, 12 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Greek article deletions[edit]

Good afternoon - I participate in the Fraternities and Sororities Project, having written a number of articles, cleaned up others and added graphics. Recently, I've worked on the broader upkeep and mentoring of the project itself. My latest contributions include expanding the watchlist (from 300 to now about 1,200 articles), clarifying structures for new project participants (Notability, syntax, consistency), adding a {{to do}} list to Talk pages, etc.

While doing this, I've noticed a low-level campaign to WP:NPOV, WP:GNG and WP:ORG many of these pages into oblivion.

I happened to see you once weighed in on discussions for this category, and wonder if you would take a look at the recent AfD discussions ongoing, to see if there is a pattern here, like in April of 2011, when you helpfully commented on the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Alpha Gamma deletion discussion. One user, Onel5969 seems to be aggressive in his "Deletionism" over a more helpful "Inclusionism". But he's also a leading contributor, and perhaps I am in the wrong. My personal opinion is that if an organization was once notable, it remains notable; Fraternities that were good enough for Baird's once, are good enough for Wikipedia. Here are the pages up for deletion now:

There are a number of similar deletions that have occurred over the past months.

Delta Beta Phi strikes me as an interesting article about a valid, while minor fraternity, which should be kept. Meanwhile, my rationale to keep the K Sig (Philippines) article is at the deletion discussion, but part of this is an assumption that SEC registration in the Philippines offers enough to meet the bar of notability. Some of those weighing in to delete these pages seem to demand multiple, published, independent sources, as if their existence was in questioned or as if these were vanity articles. I don't believe groups like these, especially the older, dormant fraternities will ever have that level of multiple citations available. Yet they are real.

Do you have any advice for me?

By the way, I've recently learned that Baird's Manual now has its Archive online, which has been expanded and enhanced since publication of the latest (20th) 1991 print edition. The online Baird's Archive is available here. I plan to revive that Delta Pi page soon, as it is now in the online Baird's archive, and thereby meets the notability rules that have been flagging it. Technical news

  • When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
  • When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
  • There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).

Since I still care about this place[edit]

(Stupid me) ... While I agree wholeheartedly that how editors pee is relatively trivial, I'm alarmed to find you swallowing the WMF's alarmist 85% statistic, because I have yet to see any indication that it emanates from anything except someone's rear end. You undoubtedly recall that the original survey asking editors their sex was not only voluntary, it disappeared forever unless one stopped whatever edit one was doing, and that the next one was also voluntary and involved a lot of binary choices; and I assume you are aware of the WMF's practices since then of counting as female only those editors with user names they think are female, those editors with female-identifying user boxes, and those who elect female pronouns, and putting the rest down as male (really queer-friendly). Perhaps there's been actual solid research that I'm unaware of that's substantiated the percentage? I heavily doubt it, not least because it's held so steady, and also because I am apparently more aware than the WMF of the importance of anonymity online to many women (and queers) and the rich history of cross-gender nyms. (I believe someone said quite recently on that unnameable site that PL was probably a couple of dozen of the female editors the WMF was aware of.) I doubt it would be possible to arrive at any useful estimate, so I personally try to avoid forming any impression of which constitutes the larger group on en.wikipedia: cis males, cis females, trans males, trans females, genderqueer, agender, genderfluid, third gender, or little green things from Alpha Centauri.

I think it's a pernicious meme that divides us, and I insist on my right to edit about Nazi highways, steamships, heroic legend, male supremacists, sex acts, and anything else I damned well please, though I admit I have yet to edit on jock straps. News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021[edit]

Wikipedia New page reviewer.svg
New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello Carrite,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

New page reviewer of the year cup.svg

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Administrators' newsletter – October 2021[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, extended confirmed protection may be used preemptively on certain high-risk templates.
  • Following a discussion at the Village Pump, there is consensus to treat discord logs the same as IRC logs. This means that discord logs will be oversighted if posted onwiki.

Technical news

  • DiscussionTools has superseded Enterprisey's reply-link script. Editors may switch using the "Discussion tools" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features.

Arbitration

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Miscellaneous

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
  • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

Should SDUSA still be listed as active on the American Socialism template?[edit]

Hi, Tim, and happy new year.

Perhaps you can shed some light (or documentation) on a discussion I began on Template talk:American socialism about whether it's time to move SDUSA from active to inactive socialist organizations.

Do you realize that we're now into the fiftieth anniversary of the Socialist Party split and the birth of the SPUSA, SDUSA and DSOC? I was there.

Any help much appreciated. —— Shakescene (talk) 07:46, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022[edit]

Wikipedia New page reviewer.svg
New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello Carrite,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 736 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 1032 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

  • Gee, now WMF has something to worry about, don't they? Oh, wait, they only care about conferences and Universal Codes of Conduct. My bad. Carrite (talk) 14:26, 24 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Only a clueless bureaucracy would think the solution to a lack of activity would be a purge of potential activists. How about polling those with the "privilege" on why they are not more active patrolling and then taking concrete action based upon that, hmmm? Ping Kudpung. Carrite (talk) 15:20, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Carrite How about polling those with the "privilege" on why they are not more active patrolling and then taking concrete action based upon that, hmmm? I've been advocating that for months (years?), but everyone, including Barkeep49 disagrees with me - at least tacitly. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 07:20, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure I had understood polling in the way that Carrite suggests, so apologies there @Kudpung. I think that's actually a promising idea and we should develop that. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 13:34, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Barkeep49: I always thought you weren't keen on the idea of pruning the deadwood out of the 750 reviewers. My most humble apologies if I'd got it wrong. It simply needs to be done. No great fuss, just remove the rights from everyone who has not made a review for more than 12 months, for example, and telling them they are welcome to reapply if they want to be active again, but the admin at PERM will first accord the right on a 30 day probation. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 14:19, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh that is definitely true - I think the benefit of removing the PERM from people is limited and smaller than the hurt we'd generate. No one wants to be the "deadwood". But finding out why the people who have it don't use the perm is very different to me. That could generate data that could help us know what to focus limited time and energy on changing. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 14:31, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Barkeep49: For a few years I was one of the main admins working the PERM requests. My focus was by no way specially on editors asking to be New Page Reviewers, indeed I started working there long before I had the idea of creating a user group for NPP. One impression that I came away with - and still maintain - is that a not insignificant number of candidates are indeed hat collectors and I still see it today whenever I poke my nose in there out of curiosity. You can do your fact finding poll, but it may be of limited worth because no one is actually going to admit to being a hat collector. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 17:25, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Arbcom evidence[edit]

Hi Carrite. I read your evidence at the open arbcom case about AfD behavior. I provided some evidence as well, and I noticed that we both used data from the afdstats tool, but some of our percentages don't match up. Many people might not remember, but I actually created the afdstats tool originally. I eventually handed it off to others to maintain, so I don't work on it actively anymore, but it hasn't really changed from when I created it and I still remember how it works. And, I think you may have misinterpreted the results that it provided.

For instance, if we look at Johnpacklambert's last 500 AfDs, we get the following stats at the top of the page:

  • Keep votes: 2 (0.4%)
  • Delete votes: 445 (97.8%)
  • Speedy Keep votes: 0 (0.0%)
  • Speedy Delete votes: 0 (0.0%)
  • Merge votes: 2 (0.4%)
  • Redirect votes: 6 (1.3%)
  • Transwiki votes: 0 (0.0%)
  • Userfy votes: 0 (0.0%)
  • The remaining 45 pages had no discernible vote by this user.

One important piece of data is that last line. Out of the last 500 AfD pages that JPL edited, the tool could not find a vote on 45 of them. That might be because JPL only left a comment, or perhaps added a delsort template or something like that. Or maybe he made a vote but didn't put a bolded Keep or Delete before it, so the tool couldn't recognize it as a vote. Either way, for the purposes of determining percentages, those 45 pages should be removed from the total, and we should assume we're looking at the last 455 AfDs that JPL voted in. Since JPL voted delete in 445 of the last 455 AfDs where a vote could be found, that means he voted delete at 97.8% of them. It seems that your calculations include AfDs where JPL didn't make a discernible vote, which artificially lowers the percentage to 445/500, or 89%.

When you go down further to the table that compares the vote to the eventual result of the AfD to see if they match, you'll notice that some AfDs are missing. If you go through that table and total up the number of AfDs where JPL voted to delete, you'll see that it only adds up to 406 delete votes, not 445. What gives? Well, the purpose of that table is to compare votes to results, so any AfDs that haven't closed yet are not considered for the purpose of that table. That means there are 39 AfDs where JPL voted delete, but the AfD hasn't yet been closed (including two from today). That means, for the purpose of calculating the percentage of AfDs where JPL's vote matched the eventual consensus, the denominator of that calculation is even less than 455 because all open AfDs are removed from consideration. (In fact, there's even a calculation on the page that removes all AfDs that were closed as "no consensus", since there's no way for someone to make a "no consensus" vote.)

So, I think your percentage calculations for how often JPL matched consensus are pretty accurate. But, your calculations for how often he voted delete seem to be off, and don't match the evidence that I provided further up the page. The same goes for other editors for whom you provided stats. It appears that Mangoe also provided some stats from the afdstats tool even further up the page, and seems to be making similar misinterpretations of the data provided by the tool. I blame myself; the way the tool displays the data is not entirely clear. If I still had access to the tool I created (and the time to work on it), I would probably redesign the layout of that page to make it more clear.

Anyway, just wanted to point that out. Happy to answer any other questions you might have. Cheers. —ScottyWong— 16:28, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I used the percentages directly from the tool, only rounding off because I didn't think three places of accuracy was justified. (For example, my second tranche of 500 votes comes to 89% accuracy.) Mangoe (talk) 18:27, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Mangoe: But again, using Johnpacklambert as an example, you list his delete vote percentage as 89%, but the tool reports that it's 97.8%. —ScottyWong— 19:20, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I see what happened: I started doing the math as you find problematic, and then switched to the other way and forgot to update this value. The others should all be correct. Thanks for catching that. BTW, these number are continually changing as more votes are cast. Mangoe (talk) 21:35, 21 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022[edit]

Wikipedia New page reviewer.svg
New Page Review queue June 2022

Hello Carrite,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

Backlog drive

A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. WikiProject Barnstar Hires.png Barnstars will be awarded.

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

Misc

There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:

>NPP backlog: 8688 as of 16:00, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
  • To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
Notes
  1. ^ not including another ~6,000 redirects
  2. ^ The number of weekly reviews reported in the NPP feed includes redirects, which are not included in the backlog we primarily track.
