Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Doctors and scientists who committed suicide[edit]

Hello, Maile66,

Just a reminder that you can't delete a category like you would delete an article or talk page because all of the pages assigned to the category are still in that category, whether it exists or not. The now red link category has to be removed from all of the pages that were assigned to the category. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 22:07, 25 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Taken care of. — Maile (talk) 22:17, 25 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Humaliwo NRHP[edit]

@MelanieN and Howcheng: Thought I should mention this to someone connected to the So-Cal task force for NRHP. I'm not familiar with who is still active. Re National Register of Historic Places listings in Los Angeles County, California, there is a Humaliwo that became NRHP in 1976. I created a redirect to Himaliwu, a 2018 student-written article that seems to be the same property. Except the way it's written, the NRHP is dated to 1959. Just mentioning, in case the article needs to be moved. I doubt anyone would see a talk page notice on Humaliwo. — Maile (talk) 12:26, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Considering that the article doesn't cite any source for the NRHP date, I suspect that it's just an error. howcheng {chat} 16:11, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Maile, thanks for the ping. And hi, Howcheng. My concern here is the actual name of the place. After some research I believe it is not Himaliwu, but Humaliwo. Our article is called Himaliwu, but in the second paragraph it says Humaliwo. As you discovered, at our NRHP article for Los Angeles County, it is called Humaliwo and the listed date is given as 1976. That article's cited reference to the NRHP gallery also says Humaliwo and 1976.[1] The reference cited to the lead paragraph in the Himaliwu article, from the California state parks, also says Humaliwo.[2] So I think the student just got it wrong - both the name and the date. We should probably change the name of the article to Humaliwo and the date to 1976, and make Himaliwu into a redirect. -- MelanieN (talk) 20:19, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and here's another source for Humaliwo - also cited in the Himaliwu article.[3] -- MelanieN (talk) 20:44, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you, and I'm glad I asked. Would you like to do the move? — Maile (talk) 21:20, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Why don't you do it? I haven't been online much lately. Darn that Real Life anyhow! -- MelanieN (talk) 23:57, 20 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Recent edits to anv[edit]

Hey! I noticed your recent edits to the Administrator intervention against vandalism while I reporting someone's comments, and I noticed how you made a comment on another person's post. When they left their report starting the line with *, you replied using :: to indent your text. This isn't generally a big issue, or something that would matter very much on an admin page, but in general it's not the best thing to do. If you would take a moment to read Wikipedia:Colons and asterisks, it outlines some issues with doing this, specifically for people who are visually impaired and have to use screen readers. The page should explain what I'm talking about. Thanks, ― Levi_OPTalk 14:33, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Levi_OP You are talking about an edit at AIV. Please see Template:Editnotices/Page/Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. This is how the AIV templates are set up. They are all like that. If you have an issue with that formatting, perhaps you could post a comment at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents. — Maile (talk)
Sorry, when I said anv I meant AIV. When I go there have typed "wp:anv" for a while and it's habit now (Administrator Noticeboard against Vandilism). Also, I'm not talking about any editnotices or templates, I'm talking about this edit that you made to the page, which uses formatting, which if used on pages that someone who is using a screen reader would read, would be very confusing / annoying (once again talking about WP:Colons and asterisks). You used :: to indent your message where you could have used ** like the page suggests, for the reasons listed there. Thanks, ― Levi_OPTalk 14:58, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I understand what you are saying. But what I am telling you are that the pre-designed templates themselves put those colons there. All an admin does is copy and paste from the template. I did not manually input the colons. That's why I suggested you bring this up at the Admin notice board. Not to report me, but to report the issue. If this formatting is causing a difficulty for readers, then they need to adjust how the templates are applied. — Maile (talk) 15:10, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, sorry. That's my bad. I didn't realize the editnotices page you sent had a dropdown with all of the templates that you would copy and paste. Sorry! ― Levi_OPTalk 15:27, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine, but I've also posted at the Administrators' noticeboard. I take your issue seriously, but the solution to that is really up to the Administrators to address. Hopefully, someone has a solution to this. Thanks for mentioning to me. — Maile (talk) 15:32, 7 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Commons linking[edit]

@Howcheng: I'm getting ready to move User:Maile66/Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management Area to Main Space. If I do a Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management Area search on Commons, it comes up with 144 images. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:MediaSearch&search=Merrimac+Farm+Wildlife+Management+Area&fulltext=Search&type=image

However, there is no Commons category by that name to do a single link. Without editing each image category link, is there a way to easily amass these images under a new Commons category for Merrimac Farm Wildlife Management Area? — Maile (talk) 13:01, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Not really. Your best bet is to use something like WP:AWB (if you are running Windows) so you can plow through all the images really quickly. howcheng {chat} 18:23, 3 March 2022 (UTC).[reply]
OK, thanks. I took care of it manually yesterday. Not too bad, just a lot of mouse clicking. — Maile (talk) 16:11, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

New administrator activity requirement[edit]

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

User:Dr. Blofeld/Scrabble words[edit]

Hi Maile66, I'm a bit shocked to find that you deleted User:Dr. Blofeld/Scrabble words citing WP:CSD#U5. The criterion applies to pages "where the owner has made few or no edits outside of user pages". Dr. Blofeld is a well-established user, so this subpage wasn't eligible to be deleted under U5. plicit 00:11, 16 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Well, perhaps you haven't noticed, but Dr. Blofeld has left Wikipedia for good. This was merely a user sub page, not an article, put up for deletion by RoanokeVirginia. — Maile (talk) 00:24, 16 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see how that is relevant. U5 still doesn't apply. WP:MFD is where the subpage should be nominated for deletion if RoanokeVirginia believes the content shouldn't exist in userspace. plicit 00:31, 16 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have restored the page. — Maile (talk) 00:58, 16 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I intended putting the lists in shrunken templates so the page size isn't large. I wasn't confident that it would be accepted as a list in the mainspace. I think it's a very valuable list all on one page and I think it would get traffic if it was moved into the mainspace in templates.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:32, 16 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Dr. Blofeld: you are most welcome. If you see this, please know that I was sad when I saw that you had left Wikipedia. You were one of the first people who helped me when I started editing at DYK, and I think your absence will be felt in many areas of the encyclopedia. — Maile (talk) 17:32, 16 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Very kind of you, thanks Maile!♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:11, 18 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wrt rating of article Devayat Bodar[edit]

Dear Senior Editor How has this Devayat Bodar article got rating of C when it should be "Stub", as only 2 reference provided and the content is also not clear. Thanks and Best RS6784 (talk) 06:53, 22 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please see the article's talk page. The rating was put there by editor @Nizil Shah: You might want to ask that editor directly on their talk page. — Maile (talk) 10:55, 22 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
In past, the article was very long with references but the references were very old and were considered unreliable. So it was trimmed down from c to level of stub by some other editor. I do not watch this article so I didn't know when that happened. He/She might have forgotten to change it to stub. Please change. Regards,-Nizil (talk) 15:40, 22 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Seeking advice/help[edit]

I was trying to decide if/how to post something to the administrators notice board and then I saw a "want to skip the drama" link which suggested reaching out to an admin direct, you were top of the list, so I hope this is ok.

Brief summary of situation: I got a notification of an edit that seemed odd so took a look at the the editor and noticed a pattern of that editor basically just removing all negative content about a blog, the author of that blog, and the book written by the same author. I also noticed that the same editor had been warned before for SPA and BLP and NPOV issues.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Anna_Lertreader the editors talk page is dominated by a history discussions and warnings about this activity.

Notably in 2016: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/IncidentArchive938#Edit_warring_over_BLP_violations conclusion that things would escalate if the behavior continued.

It seems the editor is on a path of pushing point of view edits again. What should I do? Or is telling you what I should do? Any advice is welcome. CT55555 (talk) 11:53, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Unless these are recent actionable edits, they are doing nothing wrong. This editor has not been blocked since 2016, and those were very short blocks. The warnings you mention are from 2016. Article talk page thread is from 2016. Their only edits in 2022 are this month on The Wee Blue Book. There's no edit warring or vandalism involved, so I don't see an issue. — Maile (talk) 13:00, 23 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to amend the draft blurb, which can be found at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/June 2022, or to make comments on other matters concerning the scheduling of this article at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/June 2022. Thank you today for the article, introduced: "The world tour was an effort by Hawaii's last king to save the dwindling Hawaiian race by supplementing the population with imported labor from similar cultures. One nation at a time, he brought Hawaii to the world's attention. Kalākaua was successful in jump-starting new immigration. He was a consummate tourist and an impressionable royal who returned home and tried to recreate the splendor of European monarchies in Hawaii. Kalākaua had no security guards to protect him, yet his safety was never in jeopardy, even though he chose public transport on ships and railways to circumnavigate the globe. It was just Kalākaua, a couple of friends, his cook, and here and there an extra person or two. One can only wonder how many days they all slept to recover from 281 days of non-stop globe trotting.! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:17, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
