DYK for The Persistence of Chaos[edit]
On 29 April 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article The Persistence of Chaos, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a laptop was purchased for $1,345,000 in May 2019 despite being unable to connect to the internet? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/The Persistence of Chaos. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, The Persistence of Chaos), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

- oh, the view count on this is FASCINATING. is it the tech aspect? the contradiction? the large sum of money? ezlev (user/tlk/ctrbs) 02:16, 30 April 2022 (UTC)
- (way too long)seems I'm a little slow on the draw :) I think it's a combination of all of 'em; the large sum of money and the fact that literally everyone reading the text is gonna know what a laptop is keeps them reading, and then the contradiction hooks them into clicking. I've been swirling around this whole theory of hook interestingness in my head for weeks now, and I think this is a really good example of how hooks can be both hooky and interesting at the same time, without necessarily using quirk. This is a really interesting standalone fact (it's something most people would enjoy knowing), but it also leaves the reader wanting the whole story, compelling a clickthrough. It's very formal clickbait. Lots of hooks that I don't find suitable for the main page contain facts that are somewhat interesting, but don't give a reason to the user to click. I don't think that's what DYK is supposed to be about; there's a reason we call them "hooks" and not "short-summaries". theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/they) 07:33, 1 May 2022 (UTC)

Nowhere else feels like an appropriate place to write this, but...[edit]
I'm having a lot of thoughts, most of them unpleasant. I don't entirely agree with the joke/theory that Wikipedia is an MMORPG, but I can't shake the feeling that this is a case of one player breaking character and being punished for it – or, to drop the game framework, of a shockingly negative reaction to what I see as Tamzin's admirable honesty. Wikipedia is a place where we're expected to act in a neutral manner, but that doesn't require pretending that we have no opinions. In fact, being aware of and transparent about our own biases is a critical part of ensuring that our actions are neutral and appropriate, and of holding one another accountable when we fail to do that. Before this RfA I would have assumed that was a shared understanding among most if not all editors, but now I'm not sure, and I don't love what that says about this community. ezlev (user/tlk/ctrbs) 02:37, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
- Tamzin, I'll ping you because that's what I prefer people do when my own name gets dropped, but please don't feel any pressure to reply or even to read this unless you want to. It's (unfortunately) not even really about you or your contributions at this point, though I hope the 'crats will try to address that in their analysis. ezlev (user/tlk/ctrbs) 02:43, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
- "I can tolerate anything except the outgroup". Referenced not for its title (both sides here have accused the other of intolerance, almost like there's some paradox involved), but for Scott Alexander's point that "tribes" matter more than politics. Wikipedians, as a whole, are a tribe. As much as we may infight, we don't like to be divided on a fundamental level (cf. "not a Wikipedian"-gate). As soon as I realized that, in a phonecall with the lovely BiomatrixBackup, I understood what was happening (about 48 hours too late). -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 03:08, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
- Hm! I haven't thought of Slate Star Codex since I read Neoreaction a Basilisk, and I don't think any of that is a looking glass I want to peer too closely through right now, lest I fall in. That way of looking at it feels right, though. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that Wikipedians are a tribe – but if that tribe is bound together by a shared commitment to playacting a view from nowhere, then I think something's gotta change. ezlev (user/tlk/ctrbs) 03:28, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
- You can win if you run a smart, disciplined campaign, if you studiously say nothing — nothing that causes you trouble, nothing that's a gaffe, nothing that shows you might think the wrong thing, nothing that shows you think. But it just isn't worthy of us, is it, Toby? — Jed Bartlet Tamzin wrote a new book, and Wikipedia is better for it. It's never easy, but she got the support of the community 3:1 — so I like our chances in the future. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/they) 03:41, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

I was wondering if you read the same story I did. Nice job getting an article up so quickly for Akleh, though :) might want to consider moving to killing of Shireen Abu Akleh if her life doesn't turn up as notable. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/they) 07:02, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
- Not surprised we're on the same wavelength, leeky :) I was planning on the "killing of" title at first, but I copy-pasted to the bio title before publishing – what I've seen makes me think she does have stand-alone notability, though it might take some Arabic-language searching to prove it. If not, like you said, the move can always happen later.
- "Killing of" or not, though, she did get killed, and that's a lot to deal with. Bedtime for me and hopefully plenty of rest. Sending good vibes, happy thoughts, etc. ezlev (user/tlk/ctrbs) 07:15, 11 May 2022 (UTC)
