Use of particle von[edit]

The particle "von" is not properly part of the surname. That's why an index will have "Hindenburg, Paul von" and not "von Hindenburg, Paul". Standard English usage is that it's used when giving the person's full name (or the name with a military rank in front) but not as the beginning of the surname when using it on its own. For instance, we don't say "The new Chancellor was von Bismarck" or "one of von Goethe's poems". Moonraker (talk) 07:57, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I know that German phone books will say "Hindenburg, Paul von" but I think US/English ones will say "von Hindenburg, Paul". In any case, I've never seen von Neumann referred to anything but von Neumann in English. Thus the book "The Computer from Pascal to von Neumann" vs. "Goethe's collected works", von Neumann algebra vs. Helmholtz resonator (named after Hermann von Helmholtz), and so on. He is called von Neumann throughout his Wikipedia biography John von Neumann. I'm sure if he was supposed to be called Neumann, they would have done it there. I don't think this is something we as Wikipedia editors can make up ourselves. We have to do what everyone else does, even if it seems illogical. If it matters, he was Hungarian and not German, so he might not have felt bound by German spelling customs. 173.228.123.121 (talk) 08:17, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Wernher von Braun (an actual German this time) is another name always written in English with the "von". While von Helmholtz is usually called "Helmholtz". So I would say, we can't generalize from one to the other. Whether the von is used depends on the person, something like irregular verbs. In von Neumann's case, it is always used, afaict. 173.228.123.121 (talk) 08:29, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Actor playing a known person's accent[edit]

Thought you might like this video (and perhaps the other two in the playlist): Movie Accent Expert Breaks Down 31 Actors Playing Real People Ben · Salvidrim!  06:34, 6 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

What's this about? Is it in response to something I posted? Is it about one of the article subjects in the arb case? I'm not too worked up about most of the stuff going on in that case-- I mostly looked into it as an AfC user who has been bothered by the hassles of getting new articles through the process (it used to be much easier). Re voice impersonations: you might like this. 173.228.123.121 (talk) 06:49, 6 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I admit I was curious about the IP posting on the case talk page so I looked a bit at your recent contributions and I found a post you made on a refdesk recently about an actresses' pronunciation of some vowel differing from HM QE2's, which reminded me of the video linked above. :) Ben · Salvidrim!  06:55, 6 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oh heh yeah, I remember that refdesk post now, thanks. Makes sense. My motivation for that talkpage question is that as an IP editor, I use AfC to submit new articles, and I see it as having become a dysfunctional part of the project. So I'm not keen on seeing its bureaucracy get entrenched even further. 173.228.123.121 (talk) 06:59, 6 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ACTRIAL[edit]

Just to say thanks for your contributions to the ACTRIAL discussion. I don't agree with every word you've written but I do believe that it's very valuable to hear from someone not using a confirmed account. I edit a lot of semi-protected pages and it's far too easy for the regulars to take our privileges for granted without considering the well-intentioned and able editors who are inconvenienced or deterred by protective measures. Heh, thanks. You might like this redirect request I posted yesterday. I not only couldn't write the redirect title in the request (because of an edit filter), but also couldn't explain this fact in the place where the redirect target was supposed to go (validation code in the submission template forces you to link to an actual article there). So I had to write "George Washington". What silliness. 173.228.123.121 (talk) 22:36, 23 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I found the article![edit]

I just wanted to let you know that I have finally found the article that I was looking for here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives/Humanities/2017_October_16#Need_help_finding_an_article

Anyway, thank you very much for all of your help! Futurist110 (talk) 01:59, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm glad you found it! 173.228.123.121 (talk) 23:33, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification of wording of Barbara's topic ban[edit]

Sandstein has closed the User:Barbara (WVS) ANI discussion with a topic ban worded "is topic-banned (WP:TBAN) from medical articles". Following discussion with Sandstein regarding the scope of that topic ban (User_talk:Sandstein#What_the_topic_ban_covers), it is felt that further wording is required. Therefore it is proposed that the wording of the topic ban is amended to read:

"By consensus of the community, Barbara (WVS) (talk · contribs), also editing as Bfpage (talk · contribs), is topic-banned (WP:TBAN) from health and medical topics, including anatomy and sexuality, broadly construed, and is also banned from interacting with Flyer22 (talk · contribs) (WP:IBAN)."

As you took place in the discussion, please visit Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Incidents#Proposal_for_clarification_of_scope_of_topic_ban to give your views. SilkTork (talk) 08:33, 26 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
