Random style tip[edit]

Another styletip ...

Formatting titles of literature and art

Use italics for the titles of works of literature and art, such as books, pamphlets, films (including short films), television series, music albums, and paintings. The titles of articles, chapters, songs, television episodes, and other short works are not italicized; instead, they're enclosed in double quotation marks.

I'm not sure why you haven't picked up a bevy of these already, but thanks for all your effort, particularly in tracking down good sources with diagrams, etc., on the photography- and color-related articles (not to mention fighting vandalism). Those areas of Wikipedia are much richer for your work. Cheers! —jacobolus (t) 02:05, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For your improvements to the Centrifugal force articles. Your common sense approach of creating a summary-style article at the simplified title, explaining the broad concepts in a way that is accessible to the general reader and linking to the disambiguated articles, has provided Wikipedia's readership with a desperately needed place to explain in simple terms the basic concepts involved in understanding these related phenomena. I've started to note the many scholarly contributions of this author, beginning with editing of the Wikipedia Cintel pages. For images and vision, I've had a lifelong career in color grading for feature films, tv commercials, videos, etc. with telecine and other systems worldwide; as a musician, 'Human and Machine Hearing' will certainly be fascinating. Thank you to Richard F. Lyon for providing the PDF of this work to all.

Name twin[edit]

Hey Dick,
I'm working on revamping the Oceanside, California article and came across your "name twin": Admiral Dick Lyon. He served as O'side's mayor and as one of the first navy seals. Thought you might get a kick out of reading about him. Cheers, Cristiano Tomás (talk) 18:12, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, I've read about him. I'll look again. Richard H. Lyon was the other Dick Lyon I was more likely to be confused with. We were once both in the same room at a meeting of the Acoustical Society of America. And there was a Dick Lyon who was a member of the swim club we joined some years ago, so we joined in my wife's name instead. It's kind of weird so many, since "Lyons" with the "s" is 10X more common, as in the digital signal processing book author Richard G. Lyons that I get confused with. Badminton edits[edit]

Your edits at BWF/IBF world championship sub-articles, that are for five different categories caused redlinks and need to be fixed. I have done half of your workload, rest at Men's singles and Women's singles should be done immediately to fix those redlinks. zoglophie 19:21, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I will. Can you help me start by showing me the relevant categories where the problems are? Dicklyon (talk) 19:25, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Start from here 1980 IBF World Championships – Men's singles & 1977 IBF World Championships – Women's Singles. zoglophie 19:35, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The way to fix these will be to move the articles to where the redlinks point, without the excess capitalization of Singles and Doubles, right? Dicklyon (talk) 19:38, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It will take excess time but if you can, please do so. zoglophie 19:43, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'll work on it. Might take a while. Dicklyon (talk) 19:43, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thailand moves[edit]

Just an FYI that I've done the ten you've listed at the RM (Talk:Amnat Charoen province#Requested move 2 December 2021). As you're not an extendedmover I imagine accomplishing these moves would be kinda inconvenient for you so let me know if you'd like my help with the rest :) Elli (talk | contribs) 22:09, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Elli: Help would be awesome. I'll be kinda busy with trip trip for the next week. What can you do as "extendedmover"? Are there tools to semi-automate larger groups of moves? Need help compiling the list? I can work on the article edits with help from JWB, as time permits. Dicklyon (talk) 05:33, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
extendedmover lets you move pages without leaving a redirect behind which allows you to swap pages (which is necessary here because most of the titles we're moving to are redirects that have more than one revision). It also increases your ratelimit. Anyway, I'll do the moves and leave the article cleanup to you, if you don't mind. Elli (talk | contribs) 06:15, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Draft RfC[edit]

Hi, there is a draft RfC for WP:AT at User:Cinderella157/sandbox. Your comments would be welcome. Please edit. I do not intend to launch until after the present tennis RM. Regards Cinderella157 (talk) 05:11, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

With so many questions, it will sure get interesting. To me, notability of subtopics is key; we should just merge down to one article per tournament. There will still be cases to resolve, like different sports at the Olympics, and I think we have good patterns for that without the dash and subtitle issues. Dicklyon (talk) 15:58, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Do you think it would be better presented as two sequential RfCs based on the first three and then the last three questions (assuming that the second set remains relevant after the first close)? Regards, Cinderella157 (talk) 10:32, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Persians[edit]

Do you want to persist with your objection to speedily renaming the Persian categories? What we have now is a complete mess, with subcategories in Iranian or Persian for no discernable reason. Could we have a discussion about one sample category?Rathfelder (talk) 09:03, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Where's the discussion? Dicklyon (talk) 15:56, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It could be in Wikipedia:Categories for discussion, but I hope User:HistoryofIran will explain it. I know very little about Iranian/Persian history. All I know is that what we have at present makes no sense. Rathfelder (talk) 19:17, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
What's the reason behind the objection :o? --HistoryofIran (talk) 23:56, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I had said "These look to me like they deserve discussion" because that's what it looked like. I didn't see a good rationale for speedy, just "Consistency with established category tree names"; if there's a discussion somewhere to show what's "established", I haven't seen it. Dicklyon (talk) 04:04, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
What kind of discussion does this deserve? Is there something that is disputed? --HistoryofIran (talk) 14:56, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you're changing a bunch of categories, and get questioned on it, you should either point out some discussion that established consensus to do so, or open a discussion to see if there's a problem or not. To me, it seemed that Persia might be the more conventional term than Iran, but I'm no expert on this; I just want to see some discussion for such widespread changes. Dicklyon (talk) 16:16, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry but this is too vague. Get questioned regarding what? And by whom? Objections are made by people when they disagree with someone on something, no? Was my explanation at [1] not enough?--HistoryofIran (talk) 16:31, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Your comment might be enough, if it was at a discussion that interested parties are likely to notice. CFS/S and this this User talk page are not such places. Basically, the "Speedy" approach says this is so clear that nobody would question it, based on established consensus and precedent; that doesn't look right to me for this case, so it should go to full discussion. Dicklyon (talk) 16:36, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I see you've been discussing this topic for quite a few years (Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive952#Iran or Persia), but I don't see where it was resolved. If you can show me that it's settled, I'll withdraw my objection to Speedy. Dicklyon (talk) 16:56, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but that is not good enough. If there's no one opposing the move due to x reason, then I don't see why you should object it when you don't really have any reasoning either? This is not helping Wikipedia, and is only making it harder for your fellow users (please see [2]). I can't remember that way back, and tbh I'm really not interested in doing some meaningless digging. However, regarding the Category:x-century Iranian people, it seems like 'Iranian' was ultimately chosen, considering they're being used now instead of 'Persian' [3] --HistoryofIran (talk) 17:29, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Screen refresh rates[edit]

Hi -- you undid this edit here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Impossible_color&oldid=prev&diff=1065170951 Can you elaborate for my education? Screens can refresh at well over 150-300 RPM; what's the factor that I'm missing? Flipping Mackerel (talk) 23:13, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Flipping Mackerel: More typical refresh rate is about 60 Hz, or even 30 Hz. The rotating image moves too far on each update to make a compelling demo. I do see some color at around 50 RPM, but it gets worse at higher speeds with the big jumps. As the caption says, print it and rotate it to see the effect. How does it look to you? Dicklyon (talk) 18:22, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Dicklyon: Since 60 Hz is 3600 RPM, shouldn't that result in a very small rotation per update? How can it be too far? Should the caption say Hz instead of RPM — in which case the refresh rate would indeed be too slow? (Either way, I confess I don't see any clear phenomenon, besides the black bands disappearing, whether on the screen or with a physical printout on a drill bit.) Flipping Mackerel (talk) 02:26, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
With 150 rpm and 60 Hz refresh, you get a rotation per frame of 15 degrees (that's 150/3600*360 or however you want to figure it). Some of the features in the image occupy 22.5 degrees or so. So the jumps are big compared the smoothly rotating image. At 30 Hz refresh or 200 RPM, it's much worse. Dicklyon (talk) 00:23, 19 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you spin the printout on the drill bit, you may be going way too fast. Or if you have typical LED lights, their flicker may confuse things. Put it on a stick you can spin by hand. Dicklyon (talk) 00:25, 19 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I just tried that. It works way better than the online demo, and it's easy to spin it too fast by hand. Don't use a drill. Dicklyon (talk) 00:42, 19 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Categories to move[edit]

Hi, I saw that you were involved in moving tennis articles recently at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests_for_approval/TolBot_13A. There are some "sub-categories" in Category:US Open (tennis) by year, Category:Australian Open (tennis) by year, Category:French Open by year, Category:Wimbledon Championships by year, Category:U.S. National Championships (tennis) by year, Category:Australian Championships (tennis) by year, Category:French Championships (tennis) by year and maybe more that still are "overcapitalized"... Category:US Open (tennis) by year – Men's Singles for example. Hopefully you can move them as I don't know how to.

Yes, these are all speedy movable at WP:CFR/S using reason C2D. I might get to that. But there may be zillions more; I'll take a look. Dicklyon (talk) 04:57, 9 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure what those acronyms mean so I'll leave it to you if you think it's worth doing. Red link at Wikimedia Commons[edit]

Hi, Dick. Been a long time. A wayward path led me to one of your photos, which led me to an inexplicable (to me) "red link" for you at Wikimedia Commons as its author. Which spooked me at first, as I thought it was a red link here, and I thought, "Dang, there goes another great Wikipedian...packed up his whole kit and kaboodle and even blanked his user page...," (something I've seen more than is good for the encyclopedia).

As soon as I realized it was a page at Commons instead I pasted the name link in here and was relieved to find your home page (and all its great photos) intact. Which begs for me the question, is it your intention to have just a "red link" for your Wikimedia identity at Commons, or did that somehow just happen? It would seem to me, an appreciator of your work, that you'd at least have a live link to a basic page there linking your identity to your user page here, so that those who stumble into your photo contributions have some way of learning who you are or acknowledging you for your excellent work. Yours, Wikiuser100 (talk) 17:34, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Never thought about it. Can I redirect to my en: user page? I'll try that. Glad to hear you enjoy some of my photos. Dicklyon (talk) 19:16, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I created a redirect, but it doesn't quite work. Is there another way to direct other wikis to me User page? Dicklyon (talk) 19:20, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Greetings. Just go to Wikimedia commons and open your user page there. Make any edit to create it. Your name will no longer appear as a redlink Constant314 (talk) 19:22, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Did that. But it doesn't redirect. Dicklyon (talk) 19:52, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry. It does not redirect, it just makes your name appear blue instead of red. Maybe you can put a link on your Wikimedia commons user page back to your main user page? Constant314 (talk) 20:10, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I didn't that by trying to make a redirect. Dicklyon (talk) 20:17, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I added this to my commons user page. " My main account is at [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Constant314 ]. " Constant314 (talk) 20:38, 14 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome, Dick. I did the same thing as User:Constant314, just added a space after the URL and then my Wikipedia user name (resulting in just the latter appearing in the sentence as a blue link). I had never realized I also had no linkage between the various photos I had uploaded at Commons and my Wikipedia user account. Yours, Wikiuser100 (talk) 07:13, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question re 3RR and the MOS[edit]

Hi Dicklyon,

Question for you as a more experienced copy editor regarding what to do when a user repeatedly reverts applications of the MOS: I’m aware that the MOS says not to edit war over applications of its rules. Does reverting in these cases count? Thanks, Wallnot (talk) 22:48, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, reverts are reverts. But did you start a conversation after being reverted? Did you warn him? You need to do these things before reporting 3RR violation. Dicklyon (talk) 23:12, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I've posted on their talk page, since this is a behavior rather than content issue. I was more asking what *I* should do in these cases—if I revert them again, I'll be in violation of 3rr. But this is a clear-cut violation of the MOS—does that change things, or should I still tread lightly? Thanks, Wallnot (talk) 23:18, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Holding off reverting is a good idea. The MOS:JOBTITLE bit is tricky; what's clear-cut to you will be argued the other way by others sometimes. Definitely I'd say these changes need some discussion on the article talk page; and link the discussion at the top of WT:MOSCAPS. Dicklyon (talk) 23:22, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks—I've started a discussion. Wallnot (talk) 23:52, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I just remembered the consensus for my interpretation (specifically as applied to UK political offices, at that) less than a year ago at MOS Talk. See here. Does that change your answer/how I should approach this at all? Wallnot (talk) 00:16, 22 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You should start a section on the article talk page, mention what you tried to do, link that prior discussion, and say you're holding off further reverting for now, and seek support. Then someone will likely support you (e.g. maybe I will). If there's still pushback, you discuss more before pushing too hard. Dicklyon (talk) 01:25, 22 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, now I see he responded by making it an RFC (stalling for time? hoping to draw more attention?); and you responded by removing your original start at a discussion. Anyway, we need to link that RFC now at WT:MOSCAPS so that the relevant people will notice it. They'll likely say it's a settled issue and another RFC is borderline disruptive. Dicklyon (talk) 01:46, 22 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You did that already; good. Dicklyon (talk) 01:47, 22 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

February 2022[edit]

Ambox warning pn.svg You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Vitamin D. This means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be although other editors disagree. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus, rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Points to note:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made;
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes and work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you engage in an edit war, you may be blocked from editing. Alexbrn (talk) 06:20, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Alexbrn: You have reverted me 3 times already; please be aware of WP:3RR. Why are you accusing me of reverting, when all I added was additional information from the cited source, and you are the one reverting without giving a sensible reason? Dicklyon (talk) 06:29, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I gave lots of sensible reasons. WP:CIR. If you want to make this kind of change and are reverted, then take it to talk rather then warring. Have you never read WP:BRD. Alexbrn (talk) 06:33, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed the misspelling; that was not a good reason to revert. There was no OR. And how is "The source generalizes its conclusion" a reason to revert? How do you decide "Undue" when give a bit a detail on what's being reported? And why do you say "POV pushing" when there's no POV in the edit? On what basis are you now accusing me of incompetence? These are not sensible reasons to revert. Dicklyon (talk) 06:42, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It is incompetent to cram extra detail into the lede which is not in the body, no? That is kind of basic and you should know that by now. You didn't answer my question about WP:BRD. In general, mashing the revert key in the face of stated objections is not wise, and could get you blocked. Alexbrn (talk) 06:53, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

JWB script error?[edit]

In this edit, one of the italic markers was removed from before the word "Colored" in the text below. If this is a problem with your script, please attempt to fix it.

List of current UFC fighters[edit]

Hello Dicklyon, good day. As per the edit in the page above, it is not about MOS but the "legends/keys for the fight info tables appear in "the 12 fight divisions on the fight info table. For it appears - example "Loss - UFC 272 (Las Vegas)" Tagir Ulanbekov and not loss - UFC 272 (Las Vegas)" Tagir Ulanbekov". Hope this make sense. Stay safe and best. Cassiopeia talk 01:12, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Still, that's not a reason to capitalize there. Dicklyon (talk) 01:13, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Suggested task[edit]

Hi Dicklyon, in this edit and many others you changed Men's Singles to men's singles, which I think is grammatically correct. Since you seem to be experienced in making this kind of change to many articles in one go, perhaps you could correct the casing of "Singles Draw", "Doubles Draw" and "Mixed Draw" in 2022 ATP Tour, and the articles in this list? Just a suggestion, no problem if you're not interested. Regards, Letcord (talk) 05:15, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Given that list, it should be easy to work through them with JWB. I'll get to it... Dicklyon (talk) 05:17, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I just noticed that before around 2015, in 2014 WTA Tour as an example, just "Singles", "Doubles" and "Mixed Doubles" are used in the links. They should be changed to "Singles draw", "Doubles draw" and "Mixed draw" to make things consistent across all years if possible. Letcord (talk) 05:24, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Can you edit a couple of articles and link me the diffs as examples, so I can understand better what you're after? Dicklyon (talk) 05:27, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. For the old style, I changed "|Singles]]" to "|Singles draw]]", and the equivalent for "|Doubles]]" and "|Mixed]]" in this diff. For the new style, I changed "Singles Draw" to "Singles draw", and the equivalent for "Doubles Draw" and "Mixed Draw" in this diff. Letcord (talk) 05:40, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I got a start on it. Please check my work. This one found no changes: 1991 ATP Championship Series, Single Week. Dicklyon (talk) 06:25, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Finished with those patterns. A lot of articles got no changes, so let me know if there's another pattern I need to look for. Dicklyon (talk) 07:28, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that, I was just going through the changes. The list I gave you is all the articles with the "Infobox tennis circuit season" template; some of them aren't the traditional tennis season articles that have capitalization needing fixing, so there will be no changes. Another tranche I found is here. A second pass of the first list and a pass of the second list with these added replaces would be helpful: "Singles – Doubles" to "Singles draw – Doubles draw", "– Doubles –" to "– Doubles draw –", "Singles and Doubles Draws" to "Singles and doubles draws", "Mixed Doubles Draw" to "Mixed draw", "|Mixed Doubles]]" to "|Mixed draw]]", "Singles Draw" to "Singles draw", "Doubles Draw" to "Doubles draw" and "Mixed Draw" to "Mixed draw". Letcord (talk) 07:41, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK, maybe tomorrow... Dicklyon (talk) 07:43, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No rush, just whenever you can get round to it if you have time, and thanks. Letcord (talk) 07:49, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

With these new changes, the first test edit breaks a section link: Singles draw to Singles draw. It would be good to develop a plan to fix those, too, or not yet change those section links. Maybe there's a context in which you want that change, not including after the # character? Dicklyon (talk) 04:53, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Letcord: Second test seems good. Dicklyon (talk) 05:00, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

For this one, I added the pattern "|Mixed Doubles]]" -> "|Mixed draw]]". Dicklyon (talk) 05:07, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It might be easier for both of us if I help you learn to use JWB. It's very straightforward with such literal patterns, and you can quickly test and improve what you're up to. It gets a bit hairier when you get into regular expressions, but worth it if when doing things in various contexts. Start with WP:JWB if you want to give it a try. Dicklyon (talk) 05:10, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The occasional broken section link is not an issue I think. The articles that are linked to like that are all very short, and should have "Singles draw" as the section headings anyway. In this edit, you forgot the "Singles and Doubles Draws" to "Singles and doubles draws" replace. As long as you have every single replace in that list I made above, another pass over the two lists and the job should be done. Letcord (talk) 06:40, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That one I missed was from the first-pass edits, before I started to test the new patterns. I think it will get done riight, but it's at the end of the list. Dicklyon (talk) 07:13, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

For this one I added replacement of "Men's Singles Draw" and "Women's Singles Draw". Is this how you want it? Dicklyon (talk) 16:44, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes that's good thanks. You're the expert on these issues so I would defer to your judgment anyway. Letcord (talk) 18:09, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

They're looking good now, but 1982 Grand Prix (tennis) for example still has "Mixed Doubles", which should have been fixed by the "|Mixed Doubles]]" to "|Mixed draw]]" replace, and 2006 ATP Tour for example has "Mixed doubles", which will need a "|Mixed doubles]]" to "|Mixed draw]]" replace. Not a big deal though if you've had enough of this job and want to move on to something else. Letcord (talk) 04:35, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, yes, I think I'll "retire" from this now, and let you handle the cleanup. I disabled some of the changes pending the discussion at the project. Dicklyon (talk) 04:49, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I thought it strange that those had been missed. Thanks for the assistance. If nothing comes of that discussion and you have the time, a final sweep with those two changes would be great to get done, but as I said, not a big deal if it doesn't. Letcord (talk) 06:33, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:Wolbo has changed "Mixed" to "Mixed doubles" in this article. If you're up for it, a single pass with the replace "|Mixed]]" to "|Mixed doubles]]" would end this task once and for all. Letcord (talk) 13:23, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Dicklyon. I am sorry to see how divisive this ANI is getting. I hope you're doing ok. I'm not even involved, but I'm getting hit with waves of sadness at some of the opinions expressed (by admins even!) that gnoming/ce/style work should be deprioritized or shunned. Agreed, a pinpoint often odd perspective, but give 'em hell Dick and don't let them get you down (although I've said letting Dick have fast-edit tools is like asking the captain of the Titanic if he wants some ice in his nightcap). Randy Kryn (talk) 22:01, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Randy and Buster. Yeah, having learned to use JWB and regular expressions just lets me get into trouble that much faster. Though on my biggest batch of changes, 17000+ edits in tennis, there was not a single reaction, complaint, or revert, as far as I can tell. So I was surprised when they found a bit of trivium to pick on, and took it all the way to ANI. Dicklyon (talk) 22:42, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hey! I'm the guy who disagrees with you! Don't play all civil with me like you're not a malicious, single-minded, over-confident, condescending, multi-content-area NERD who is here to have hiiis owwwwn waaayyy!!! I know because I am also that guy! The diff: When I make a mass change (and mine are hundreds, not thousands) I always pause to absorb response. Usually for 24-48 hours. You and I see BOLD a bit differently. I wish there were an easier way to assay the confidence on these sorts of things before we wax bold with changes about which we will inevitably disagree en-mass. Self-restraint? Naaahhh! That'll never work. BusterD (talk) 23:31, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict with case fixing: Doubles vs. doubles[edit]

Hey, there @Dicklyon. I've noticed you've been converting upper- to lowercase across many tennis pages, BLP's and tournaments, using JWB. Please refrain from doing this, because you've been redirecting the wikilinks to not-yet created pages. For instance, Nicolas Mahut's performance timeline (diff), under Rome for 2008, 14 and 17, you changed the Doubles → doubles, which wikilinks to pages, that don't exist. And now others have to clean up after your mess. I am not planning on reverting your every single edit, because there are just too many. But a lot, especially the older tournaments have draws, Singles and Doubles, still capitalized. Hope you understand this. Looking forward from hearing from you. Sincerely, Qwerty284651 (talk) 18:17, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can you point out a couple where I accidentally made a redlink? Dicklyon (talk) 18:18, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Qwerty284651: Also, please join in at WT:WikiProject_Tennis#Bot_for_renaming/moving_tennis_articles if you want to help us get this sorted out to completion. Dicklyon (talk) 18:21, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Dicklyon: I re-edited my comment, as you added yours, thereby creating an edit conflict, where I accidentally removed yours. Anyway, re-read my comment, I added an example. Qwerty284651 (talk) 18:26, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK, that's the same problem someone found toward the end of the linked discussion: the links were to redirects, and redirects didn't get move like articles did. I fixed that one case, but will work on a more general fix. Dicklyon (talk) 18:42, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed the example mentioned above. Changed the redlinks to their current article name, bypassing redirects, except for one case, where I had to rename the tournament's doubles draw from doubles → back to Doubles, so it wikilinked properly. Qwerty284651 (talk) 18:55, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
