Deletion of a page[edit]

Hi - Can you tell me who I have to contact about deleting a Wiki page It is concerning an airfield in North Devon, UK. The information is completely wrong, and of course, could be dangerous to pilots visiting. It also links to Facebook and the airfield has a Facebook page, but the page with incorrect information keeps showing up in searches which means pilots cannot find the CORRECT information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Altomar718 (talk • contribs) 08:37, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

There are a number of avenues to deletion of articles detailed in the guide to deletion. It's hard to say what the best approach would be without knowing the name of the article in question. Beeblebrox (talk) 08:47, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
@Altomar718: What is the article in question? What is the incorrect information? Mjroots (talk) 09:27, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
What kinds of pilots use Wikipedia to formulate their flight plan?! Clarityfiend (talk) 09:30, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
Hopefully so few that we don't need an addition to Wikipedia:Legal disclaimer and Wikipedia:Medical disclaimer. "Wikipedia does not offer advice on where to land your plane without crashing"? PrimeHunter (talk) 09:58, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
The poster has blanked Belle Vue Airfield. I have restored it. "It is most popular for model aircraft". Yeah, that's where I will land my plane without checking anything. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:06, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
I suspected that might be what they were getting at, and it is possible that a single short, private, grass runway primarily used by model airplanes is not notable enough for an article, but of course simply blanking it is not the way to proceed. Beeblebrox (talk) 19:33, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

No target errors[edit]

I am not sure how to fix the sfn no target errors on Lake Estancia - to me it looks like the titles match. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 10:14, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

@Jo-Jo Eumerus: Special:ExpandTemplates can reveal where a category is added (except Special:TrackingCategories added automatically by MediaWiki). Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors is added three times. I haven't examined why but maybe the location can help you. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:24, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
Tried that, but it didn't help at all. Perhaps it's a matter of nesting a sfn in an efn but I wouldn't know how to resolve it then. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 10:28, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
@Jo-Jo Eumerus: I examined the first case:
{{sfn|Dictionary Geotechnical Engineering/Wörterbuch GeoTechnik: English-German/Englisch-Deutsch – closed basin|2014|p=236}}
...
* {{cite book |title=Dictionary Geotechnical Engineering/Wörterbuch GeoTechnik: English-German/Englisch-Deutsch |date=2014 |publisher=Springer |isbn=978-3-642-41714-6 |page=1018 |url=https://link.springer.com/referenceworkentry/10.1007/978-3-642-41714-6_162627 |ref={{harvid|Dictionary Geotechnical Engineering/Wörterbuch GeoTechnik: English-German/Englisch-Deutsch|2014}} |language=en |chapter=pluvial lake}}
The " – closed basin" part is not matched. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:47, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
Um, in the source they do match. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 11:10, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
The dash in " – closed basin" was different in the two locations, so I copied the second onto the first to fix it. There are are still errors at references 125 and 126. TSventon (talk) 11:25, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
@Jo-Jo Eumerus: I made a wrong assumption about what it was trying to match. It was this:
* {{cite journal |title=closed basin |date=2014 |pages=236–236 |doi=10.1007/978-3-642-41714-6_32452 |url=https://link.springer.com/referenceworkentry/10.1007/978-3-642-41714-6_32452 |ref={{harvid|Dictionary Geotechnical Engineering/Wörterbuch GeoTechnik: English-German/Englisch-Deutsch - closed basin|2014}} |publisher=Springer |language=en}}
As TSventon says, the dashes were different (en dash versus hyphen). That's tricky because some browsers may match them in the browser's own string search feature. If you copy-paste in the source then all browsers will hopefully copy the right character. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:51, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
Yeah, that worked. It was a dash-emdash-whatever sort of thing. It's solved now. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 12:50, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

Help with AfD[edit]

Hi, I filed a AfD nomination at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/2016 United States presidential election in American Samoa. The problem is it was my very first filing, and I tried to file multiple articles for all of whom it is the 2nd nomination. Looks like I wasn't well prepared to file this and now I'm stuck. It will be of immense help if an editor can continue from where I left. Thanks! ---CX Zoom(he/him) (let's talk|contribs) 17:05, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

CX Zoom, the nomination looks fine, the AfD notice and today's AfD page bioth link to the discussion. However you need to add notifications to the three other article pages that you added to the nomination. TSventon (talk) 18:51, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

Changing information in wikipedia?[edit]

Hi! I am new to wikipedia and the roles of users and editors. I noticed that a couple of pages are using a lot of my research, which is totally fine, but that some of the information is not factual. For example it says 1940 Tokyo Olympics were cancelled due to world war 2, when in fact they were forfeited back to the IOC. Someone from the Washington Post then also said the games were cancelled due to world war 2...which in fact they were forfeited by Tokyo, then Helsinki forfeited them, and then they were cancelled. Perhaps this is my being really anal and specific, but I think mislabeling events leads to further confusion. So my request is, how do I suggest that the 1940 Tokyo Games be relabeled as Forfeited by Tokyo Organizing committee, and the 1940 Olympic Games were cancelled due to war? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 157.131.141.25 (talk) 19:34, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello. The article 1940 Summer Olympics already uses the word "forfeited", but if reliable sources also use the word "canceled", then so too will Wikipedia. Please discuss your concerns at Talk:1940 Summer Olympics. Cullen328 (talk) 19:53, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

Need table so I can put in an article[edit]

I would like this patent table done so I can put into Lambert Gas and Gasoline Engine Company. I would like to place it at the end of the History section. It is too technical for me to do. Any help would be appreciated. I can then place a reference at the end so I can show where I got the info, which happens to be from the Library of Congress. Thanks for help.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 21:56, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

Cite a musical recording[edit]

Hi Folks! How would you a cite a musicial recording. It is for The Aesthetics of Resistance, specifically this: [1]. Thanks. scope_creepTalk 01:44, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

I found Cite AV media notes. Would there be anything else that would be suitable, for example citing classical music. Thanks. scope_creepTalk 07:27, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
In the section heading, you refer to a musical recording. Then, in the OP, you link to a WorldCat web page (presumably about the recording). In your second post you name {{cite AV media note}}. That template is to be used when citing "print liner notes from albums, DVDs, CDs and similar audio-visual media."
What is it that you really want to cite? If the musical recording: {{cite av media}}; if the musical-recording liner notes: {{cite av media notes}}; if the Worldcat page: {{cite web}}.
Trappist the monk (talk) 12:02, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
@Trappist the monk: Those cites are really for physical recording. They're very generic and don't contain the fields that would typically need to be filled. I'm trying to find something that will cite the whole details of the symphony. I found this: {{Template:Cantata discography row}} which display a row in table. There must be a template that can cite a symphony name, who created it, the orchestra name, the conductor name, the label it was recording on, the leading people, recording date, what type of symphony it is e.g cantata, how many and names individual sections with in, the name of the choir, when and who commissioned it and so on. That must exist somewhere. This template comes close but seems to need the table to work. scope_creepTalk 02:48, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
@Scope creep if you include the OCLC number as a parameter in the AV media cite it will create a link to the Worldcat page which contains the details. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 09:23, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
@Roger (Dodger67): Yip, I used oclc on other references regularly and put it in when I can, but the cite av media isn't suitable here. I found other articles that tend to put the raw text in, others for example on Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin, BWV 125#Recordings puts it all in table but surely they're must be a template that can use be used as a standalone entry, in for example a bullet list. I don't see anywhere on Wikipedia. I've checked a whole bundle of articles and its either the table or bulleted list of text. I'll really don't think either is suitable, dumping a big table on relatively small article or using standalone text unformatted on each bullet isn't suitable either. Cite av doesn't have the ramge to record all the information that needs to be records. It is the wrong template. scope_creepTalk 10:18, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
So you aren't actually attempting to cite something that will end up in the article's §References section. Rather you want add an item to some sort of list. I don't know of any such templates that aid that. Have you asked at WP:WPMU?
Trappist the monk (talk) 12:31, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
@Trappist the monk: I never thought about that, actually. That is a good idea. scope_creepTalk 13:24, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

See WP:REFUND. It's usually a request on the closers talk, and bare in mind it depends on why it was deleted if it would be returned. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 07:57, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

I'd like to upload some images which are PD in the US, but copyrighted in Australia.[edit]

There's a category on Commons for Norman Lindsay's works. (commons:Category:Works_by_Norman_Lindsay.) He was Australian and died in 1969, so his works are not in the public domain in Australia (unless they were works-for-hire or made for the government). However, I found this exhibition catalog from 1923, which, by publication date, is in the public domain in the United States, though not in Australia, as I understand it. I think I can I upload this to the English Wikipedia (given commons:COM:URAA and commons:COM:HIRTLE. Is there a way I can add a note or metadata to say that it will be out of copyright in 2040, and should be moved to Commons then? Which copyright tags do I use? Is {{PD-US-expired-abroad|2040}} correct here? grendel|khan 07:01, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

I think you are correct and the tag you suggest is all that is required. I'm surprised the template doesn't provide for saying for which country the copyright continues. So far as I know there are no country templates for such in-copyright files but I'd like to be proved wrong. However, you can state the country somewhere in the file description, as I'm sure you will. Our content guideline is at WP:Non-U.S. copyrights. Thincat (talk) 11:41, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

Issue with my Wikipedia page[edit]

Hello there, I am the owner of a Wikipedia page, under my name, Narges Ranjbar Sari. I’m former athlete of the Iranian national team in two disciplines of taekwondo and shooting and one of the few Iranian women athletes who succeeded in wearing two completely different disciplines wearing the national team jersey. My name is registered in both the World Taekwondo and Shooting Federations as Iran's representative in international competitions. As well as the few international positions I have gained over the years. I posted all this content on my Wikipedia page and now domestic and foreign news agencies, but unfortunately, due to uncertainty, this content is not accepted by Wikipedia. I would like to ask you if you can help me.

@Joyce1959 No, it was not. You added it to the bottom of your user talk page, which is a place designed for people to leave comments for you. Draft articles should be in draft space. I would encourage you to copy it over there. Another problem with it is that your references are all clumped together at the end, rather than being properly located inline, next to the information they support. Once you've moved it to draft space and fixed the referencing issues, put the magic text {{subst:submit}} at the top of the draft and someone from articles for creation will come along and review it. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:37, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

Pickaxe2020 Since you created your account today, I assume you are referring to an article about yourself(Wikipedia does not have "profiles") and not your account. Purely for information, Jawico665, Wikipedia bans are on a person, not merely an account, so if, hypothetically, an account holder banned on Wikimedia Commons was to create another account and edit on Commons with it (or if they did so as an IP), and if this was detected, that second account would also be banned and the person might be further sanctioned for sockpuppetry. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.193.130.191 (talk) 08:56, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

Previously Deleted Article[edit]

If an article was previously deleted at AfD should it be speedy deleted? I've heard people use the the phrase that a deletion should be "salted" in what I assume means to keep anyone from recreating the article. Is this one of these instances: The Overnightscape. TipsyElephant (talk) 02:19, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

We have a speedy deletion criterion for it (WP:G4), but it only applies if the article was deleted at AfD before and the new incarnation doesn't address the concerns that were raised in the AfD. I don't think a SALT is necessarily in the cards quite yet, but it's getting there. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 02:30, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
G4 only allows speedy deletion if the recreated article is "substantially identical" but the criterion is quite often wrongly used. Thincat (talk) 16:51, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

You will have to ask on the Esperanto Wikipedia; we can only help you with articles on the English Wikipedia. Typically articles are written without any involvement from the subject, and the subject cannot grant or deny permission for an article about them to exist, because articles summarize independent reliable sources. If many independent reliable sources write about you, there is probably not much you can do about it other than argue that you are not notable enough to merit an article. Ikamet Wikipedia has articles, not pages. Asking "how do I create a page" is kind of like asking "how do I build a house" without knowing anything about land acquisition, permitting, construction, electrical work, etc. Successfully creating a new article is the absolute hardest task to perform on Wikipedia. It is strongly recommended that your first gain experience and knowledge by editing existing articles in areas that interest you, to get a feel for how Wikipedia operates and what is expected of article content. Using the new user tutorial is also a good idea. New users who dive right in to creating articles often end up disappointed and with hurt feelings as their work is mercilessly edited and even deleted by others. I don't want you to have bad feelings, so I strongly advise you to choose this path.
However, if you still want to attempt to create a new article now, please read Your First Article and then visit Articles for Creation to create and submit a draft for review by another editor(new users cannot directly create new articles and must use this process). You will want to first gather any independent reliable sources you can find to summarize, and review the definition of notability. If you are associated with the topic, you will want to read WP:COI and WP:PAID for information on required formal disclosures. 331dot (talk) 11:50, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

how to publish draft[edit]

how to publish draft into article need help as I am not getting option in top to move it into article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ruchita Maheshwari (talk • contribs) 15:00, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

Ruchita Maheshwari Just click "submit your draft for review" at the top. However, it will likely be rejected, as it does not summarize what independent reliable sources say about you. You must set aside everything you know about yourself and only write based on what independent reliable sources say about you. Please read WP:AUTO to learn why writing about yourself, while not forbidden, is discouraged. 331dot (talk) 15:11, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
There is a blue submit button, but don't try that yet. You need to remove the misplaced external links from the draft text, and you need to ensure that you have properly cited references to independent reliable sources. --David Biddulph (talk) 15:13, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

Are consensuses needed to implement a tag?[edit]

For example, on Conscription Crisis of 1917, someone put a tag saying the lead needs to be rewritten. I reverted it stating that there needs to be a proper consensus and not just one person's belief. Was I right? I'm starting to think I was a bit harsh... Ak-eater06 (talk) 16:37, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

Tags are merely edits and may be placed on the opinion of a single editor but they may also be reverted likewise. Then there should be discussion. Essays suggesting appropriate behaviour are WP:Tagging pages for problems and WP:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle Thincat (talk) 17:00, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
...and, sadly, no one seems to be discussing matters at Talk:Conscription Crisis of 1917. Thincat (talk) 17:05, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
@Ak-eater06: The how-to on removing maintenance templates is Help:Maintenance template removal and includes a section on when to remove them. They're a little more than ordinary edits. "It is not okay to remove maintenance templates until the issue flagged by the template is remedied first". Toddst1 (talk) 00:14, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

Need additional citations for verification problem[edit]

I need to connect the red items to blue links and can't seem to make the connection. PLEASE HELP. Hello, Leonard Crofoot. I'm afraid you seem to have got rather confused (not surprising: the ways of Wikipedia are sometimes quite arcane). The links within the text of Leonard Crofoot are internal links to other Wikipedia articles: the blue ones are to articles which exist, and the red ones to Wikipedia articles which do not exist - either they haven't been written, or they have been deleted. Either way, links within Wikipedia will do nothing to rescue the article: Wikipedia itself is not regarded as a reliable source (since anybody can edit it). Neither would iTunes, Tunekind, or iMDB contribute in any way to keeping the article.
The problem is (assuming you are Crofoot - I'll come to that below), that it is not "your listing" - it is an encyclopaedia article about you. It does not belong to you, it is not for your benefit except incidentally, and it should be based almost entirely on what people who have no connection with you have chosen to publish about you in reliable places, not on what you have done, said or made (except insofar as these inependent people have commented on it).
Reviews, such as https://playbill.com/article/nijinsky-speaks-portrait-of-legendary-dancer-bows-off-bway-aug-24-com-77059 will help, but that one does not say very much about you - we need more solid sources that are about you.
Please note that autobiography is strongly discouraged in Wikipedia, because it tends to be difficult to write sufficiently neutrally. You should limit yourself to making edit requests on the article's talk page.
In this case, what you need to do to contest the deletion is to find several places where people wholly unconnected with you (and not prompted by a press release or interview) have chosen to publish significant coverage of you in reliable sources (for example, Playbill or the NYT). If you can find at least three such - with more about you than is in the Playbill review - then post them on Talk:Leonard Crofoot, as evidence that you do in fact meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability, and the article is salvageable. --ColinFine (talk) 19:51, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

Can someone delete Centaurea solistitialis for me?[edit]

Hi all

I'm creating a lot of plant articles and there was a typo in the list I was using so I accidentally created Centaurea solistitialis, there is already an article for the species at Centaurea solstitialis. Could someone delete the new article as its a duplicate (also does not include any content).

Thanks

John Cummings (talk) 18:43, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

@John Cummings: if you replace all the content of the article with {{Db-g7}} it will signal that you, the initial creator and sole contributor of the article, decided to delete it which will notify the relevant people. Umimmak (talk) 18:47, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
Thanks very much Umimmak, John Cummings (talk) 18:49, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

Constructive?[edit]

 – Heading created by Tenryuu.

What should be considered 'constructive' when I am editing a post? HogRidaa79 (talk) 19:39, 15 February 2022 (UTC) HogRidaa79

@HogRidaa79: If you are improving an article or a talk page conversation, that would be "constructive". Editing someone else's post to introduce a typo would not be considered "constructive". GoingBatty (talk) 01:10, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello,

My name is Amanda Farah and I am reaching out to you on behalf of Santa Ana College. I was reaching out in hopes for assistance. The link below still reads as our previous Santa Ana College President. Can you please guide me to the person who will be updating this. I have listed the new Santa Ana College President below.

Looking forward to your reply.

An editor has updated the page. P.S. There is no specific person responsible for updating college info. Clarityfiend (talk) 22:50, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
In the future, you can post a suggestion on the article's talk page (e.g. Talk:Santa Ana College. (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~.) GoingBatty (talk) 01:11, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

Editing Help for New User[edit]

Hello,

I am very new to editing in Wikipedia. I have an account and I wanted to add a name to a high school under it's Notable Alumni. I was able to add the name, but I can't enter it alphabetically with the other names listed. I also have a source to cite, but I'm having difficulty with that as well. It would be great if I could have assistance.
