Could you check you're happy with how I propose to handle the Lists of plant genera names? I'm trying to handle it in a way that emphasizes the achievement, without just quoting the same introduction repeatedly. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 19:32, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

Thanks, and thanks for your diligent work at the Signpost, much appreciated. Your writeup works for John and me, except there are almost 14,000 vascular plant genera ... for links to a list of those, see User:Dank/sandbox. I want to cover the 14k some day, but the etymological sources just aren't sufficient yet ... that's why our first 4 genus lists cover only the genus names that Stearn lists (and that are still accepted at PoWO). - Dank (push to talk) 19:44, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
Sheesh. Good luck. I presume some of those will be synonyms, obsolete, or alternate systems, but....
Anyway, added a note to that effect, including a reference to my old biology professor who still used the two-kingdom system. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 7.8% of all FPs 21:15, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
Added much later: the lists are now generated from 4 etymological sources, and cite several more. - Dank (push to talk) 16:13, 19 August 2021 (UTC)

I regret to inform you we're doing it again[edit]

User:ProcrastinatingReader/draft. If you wouldn't mind looking the proposal over, I think we would all appreciate it. You have a ton of institutional knowledge about this. Thank you. Enterprisey (talk!) 09:06, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on it. - Dank (push to talk) 15:02, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

I'm not up to speed on DYK, but that looks good to me. I'm sorry for your loss. - Dank (push to talk) 14:49, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

Probable vandalism[edit]

Hello, I think this page has been vandalized.Venicescapes (talk) 13:23, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

Thanks. It looks like it's been reverted. Jim, I'd rather not take admin actions on TFA ... you might consider protecting these pages, at least until we're done with the month. - Dank (push to talk) 16:01, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
Semi-protected and block the ip for a month Jimfbleak - talk to me? 16:50, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. After a couple of years of chasing vandals, I finally just started semi-protecting these pages before each month even started, with a summary of "persistent vandalism" ... because it was persistent, the unprotected pages were almost always vandalized sooner or later during their month. - Dank (push to talk) 18:26, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

Diebold;[edit]

Hi. I tried Unburying_history and so far it remains buried due to an admin on the talk page. The conflict is a bit twilight zone. Then today, starting at Conflict-of-interest_editing_on_Wikipedia I noticed you have edited Premier Election Solutions and Diebold stuff. Then I noticed that there are no flags or anything in the current articles or their talk pages about the history of edits by the company which you have talked about. Which seems extra fishy. Thought maybe you'd have some interest/insight.

(By the way, I'm confused by your and Dank55's very odd recent editing history. You seem to be making a ton of toy edits, day after day... Can't figure out where your main account is, or your mentioned doppleganger documentation.)

--50.201.195.170 (talk) 05:43, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

It looks like you're talking about a few edits I made to the talk page of that article 13 years ago. I haven't thought about the subject or kept up with developments since then, and it's not a subject I'm interested in. My current work mostly involves preparing plant lists, initially in my own userspace. - Dank (push to talk) 06:10, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

Coulterella and Coulteria[edit]

Coulteria is named for Thomas Coulter, but Coulterophytum and the valid (first published) of the two Coulterellas are for John Merle Coulter. I don't know how to break up the set. Also dates for Condal are unknown. I had mistakenly given him the dates belonging to one of the artists of the expedition, which were copied after I neglected to have them deleted from whatever site I had given them to. RFC on citation style[edit]

An editor switched the citation style on Russian battleship Dvenadsat Apostolov without getting consensus and I reverted him for violating WP:CITEVAR. He's now started a RFC on changing the style, but I'd appreciate it if you could keep an eye on it and maybe close it whenever appropriate as I'm not at all familiar with the workings of RFCs. If you're too busy, perhaps you could recommend somebody else?--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 01:59, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

Good to hear from you. I'd like to help. I can think of maybe 5 reasons why I'm not I don't think I'm the right person to close it, but I'll go join the discussion. Most of the active reviewers at FAC are good with CITEVAR and FAOWN ... I would think any of them would be better at closing this than me. OTOH, I've been seeing more unworkable demands pop up over the past year than I remember previously ... maybe covid has been affecting the general mood, or maybe it's something else ... and if this is one more example of things getting harder for no reason, then we may both be screwed. - Dank (push to talk) 02:21, 29 March 2021 (UTC)
I appreciate it. I'll keep your suggestion in mind once things get a little further along.--Sturmvogel 66 (talk) 11:39, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

Can we please keep the conversation in the FLC? You're not actually telling people the reason for my objection to the Wikidata links, just asking off-nom for their preferences. without them necessarily understanding why I think a link to an unreferenced database dump with nothing useful for our readers in it is not what we expect from our finest work on Wikipedia. Request for peer review help[edit]

Hi Dank. I hope you are doing well and staying safe during these times! Apologize to bother and posting a random request. I have just started to work on a stub (Fontainea Venosa)and had added some sections. I am trying my best to get the article to B class hopefully. Knowing your expertise, I would love if you can help me to review and left a comment on what I can do to improve my edits. I hope that this is okay, but no pressure if you are busy. That is completely fine and understandable :) Hope to hear from you soon. The article is Fontainea Venosa

Hello, Dank. Due to mentions of various templates ({{schoolblock}}, {{anonblock}}, etc) your user script is categorized into various maintenance categories: Category:Pages with templates in the wrong namespace, Category:Shared IP addresses from educational institutions, etc. To fix this issue, you can wrap your whole script page in <nowiki>...</nowiki> in JavaScript comments:

// <nowiki> first line of [[User:Dank/tempeasyblock.js]]
... your code ...
// </nowiki> last line of [[User:Dank/tempeasyblock.js]]

TFA blurb (Sorabji)[edit]

Hello, I have noticed you recently made some changes to the blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 15, 2021. I liked the first change ("ranging" instead of "ranges"), though English is not my first language and I'm not sure if the meaning of the sentence is now slightly different. More importantly, your latest edit to the blurb led to the removal of the word "mixed" in "mixed ancestry". I don't know if you found the adjective to be misleading or superfluous, but much of the literature on Sorabji emphasizes his mixed heritage and the role it played in his identity and sense of alienation. However, I can understand it might be redundant when the next sentence mentions his parents' roots. Let me know what you think. Thank you. Toccata quarta (talk) 10:09, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

Thanks. I've restored "mixed", but I'll raise the issue on Wednesday at WP:ERRORS. There's an argument that some would find that to be offensive language, and I don't want to make the call. (I'm certain that no offense is intended, obviously, and I'm not personally offended ... I just think it would be safer to get a range of opinions on the best way to say what we want to say.) - Dank (push to talk) 14:31, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
Toccata quarta, actually, the more I think about this, the less I want to discuss it at ERRORS. I removed "mixed", and combined the two sentences so that the meaning of "ancestry" is clear from the rest of the sentence. Does that work for you? - Dank (push to talk) 15:38, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
Yes, that works just fine! Many thanks. It would nonetheless be interesting to see what the consensus at ERRORS would be, given that the lead of the Sorabji article still has the "mixed ancestry" bit. Some people might contend that "any kind of publicity is good", but it might divert attention from Sorabji and cause people to talk more about systemic bias at Wikipedia, and it's better to be safe. Let me know what you think. Toccata quarta (talk) 16:45, 10 October 2021 (UTC)
If you're happy, I'm happy. It's actually possible for "mixed ancestry" to be fine in the article but not in the blurb ... the theory is that, the more prominent the placement, the more careful you have to be that people don't hear it as "Wikipedia's voice" (not that there is any such thing, but it comes across that way to some readers). I don't think the phrase is likely to be offensive if people aren't focusing on it. But in general, there's no winning on questions of what's offensive ... everyone's offended by something, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes not. I just try to play it safe enough with the blurbs I work on that the question never comes up (and so far, we've been lucky). - Dank (push to talk) 18:15, 10 October 2021 (UTC)

For me, it stands for reflection and clarity. today: see yourself, read about a hymn praying to not be on earth in vain, about a comics artist whose characters have character (another collaboration of the "perennial gang", broken by one of us banned), and in memory of the last prima donna assoluta, Edita Gruberová. I had to go to two grave sites last week, one who died now, one who died 10 years ago, so standing upright and in black seems appropriate. More colours - but subdued - can be had on hikes, - updated. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:37, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi Dank,
First, I hope you get better soon. Second, I hope you're planning on sticking around some, albeit in a reduced capacity. List of descriptive plant species epithets[edit]

Hello, Dank,

Since these pages have been moved around a lot, there have been a lot of broken redirects that were deleted. You can see them at the Broken Redirect list. Since you were involved with these moves, I thought if there were some you wanted to restore, you could see which ones have been deleted and decide if there were any you wanted to restore and correct to the new page title. In general, if you leave a redirect when you move a page, then the bots will change all of the old redirects to point to the new page location. If you don't leave a redirect, then the old redirects are broken and are deleted, either by a patrolling admin or by AnomieBOT III. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 21:41, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

Thanks Liz, I assumed the bot would get them, hope I haven't made any extra work for you. - Dank (push to talk) 22:37, 2 December 2021 (UTC)

Etymology question[edit]

Hi, Dan! I am seeking a source for the common name of Symphyotrichum adnatum. The epithet is in the protologue, but the common name, scaleleaf aster, is something I'd also like to put in the etymology section for the article (expanding.. see here). Do you happen to know where I could find that type of information, or do you have a source for common names of plants? Eewilson (talk) 21:47, 27 December 2021 (UTC)

Quattrocchi's CRC World Dictionary is my go-to for common names, but it doesn't have that one (or even the genus for that one). Coombes has the genus but not the species. Sorry. Not sure where to send you for this one (other than the usual online sources). - Dank (push to talk) 21:56, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
What about Aster adnatus? Depends on the date of the book. The species' genus was changed in the mid-1990s, and it was also in Lasallea and Virgulus at some time. What would the "usual online sources" be for the etymology of a common name? :) Eewilson (talk) 22:03, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
Quattrocchi is no help for any of those. Gbif.org lists the common name, and there are other helpful sites listed under the "names" tab for this species at eol.org, but it's probably less than you're looking for. You could put "showing the leaf scales" in an image caption, if they stand out in the image. - Dank (push to talk) 22:22, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for checking all those. I think your idea of the image caption is a good one. Take care! Eewilson (talk) 22:44, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
Sure thing. Also ... I might be missing something obvious, because my focus has been on scientific names recently, and I haven't been thinking about common names. I'll ping you if I think of anything else. - Dank (push to talk) 22:47, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
