Description
Of all Michel Foucault's work, the three-volume History of Sexuality is the best known to classicists. It is also a text about which many have ambivalent feelings. While it is surprising and exciting to find a modern critical theorist who is willing to discuss the ancient world, Foucault's prac-tice of history and the picture which he paints of Greece and Rome seem alien and rather dubious to many professional classicists. The book under review offers a collection of essays which seek, from a variety of different standpoints and different levels of skepticism, to define and refine Foucault's contributions to the study of the classical world. One of the aspects which I enjoyed most about Rethinking Sexuality, and which, to my mind, makes it an especially welcome addition to the field, is that it takes Foucault seriously as a theorist as well as as a classical historian.
