Joshua Xavier Gutierrez Alonso,[1] known professionally as Xavi, is an American singer-songwriter of regional Mexican music, who rose to prominence in 2023 through his singles "La Víctima" and "La Diabla", which would go viral on TikTok and eventually lead to the singer's debut on the Billboard Hot 100. Between the release of both singles, "Poco a Poco" with Los Dareyes de la Sierra and "Modo DND" with Tony Aguirre were released and performed similarly in charts.[2]
Life and career[edit]
Joshua Xavier Gutierrez was born in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. He started playing the guitar at the age of 10 and he began writing songs at 12.[3] Gutierrez would start his musical career in 2020, with early inspirations by acts such as Camila and Sin Bandera, with the release of his debut single "Vete Ya", through Baga Music.[4][5] Releasing more singles after, he would later get the attention of Interscope Records, who signed a record deal with him after his song "Amigos con Derecho" went viral.[2] Gutierrez ended up in a car accident shortly after signing, which resulted in a facial and skull fracture. Therefore, he was told that he could not be able to sing.[4] Videos of Gutierrez singing and playing guitar in his hospital bed had surfaced around social media, later recovering from the accident.[6] Following his recovery, in early 2022, he would change his musical style to tumbados románticos, which are corridos tumbados with lyrical themes revolving around romance. He marked this change with the release of several singles.[4]
In May 2023, he released his debut EP My Mom's Playlist, which features covers of songs such as Maná's "Rayando el Sol".[2][7] In August 2023, Xavi would release "La Víctima", which became his breakthrough single as it saw an increase in popularity through TikTok.[8] In December 2023, the song eventually debuted at number 24 on the US Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart, later reaching the top 10.[9] Following the release and success of "La Víctima", he released two collaborative singles—"Poco a Poco" with Los Dareyes de la Sierra and "Modo DND" with Tony Aguirre—which also charted in the United States.[10] Later that month, he released the single "La Diabla", which debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 76, later peaking at number 20 and becoming his second breakthrough single.[11] The single had also charted throughout Latin America and had also topped the US Hot Latin Songs chart, peaked at number 4 on the Billboard Global 200, and topped Spotify's Global chart, eventually becoming the longest-running number-one Latin song on the latter chart.[12][13]
In 2024, Guiterrez would announce his first tour, the Poco a Poco Tour, along with its dates in the spring which start in Mexico City and Guadalajara, with later dates in cities in the Western United States.[14][15]
