An editor has created the article Yorick and Yurick, that appears to deal with Vladimir Vysotsky, Oleg Dahl, and Innokenty Smoktunovsky; their relationship to the character Yorick in Shakespeare's play Hamlet; and possibly some kind of connection with secret intelligence services. The article has several aspects that concern me, but mainly the problem is that I am failing to understand what it is actually about (in policyese, what its assertion of notability is); and while it does cite some sources, they are all in Russian so I am unable to determine whether they can be considered to verify the text. And the problem is compounded by the article's creator's limited grasp of English. As it stands I am going to end up nominating it for deletion, but I really hate doing that if there's a chance it's just my failure to understand. Especially as the editor has indicated they will be offline for several months soon, and thus will not be able to argue their case at AfD.

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

Latinisation in the Soviet Union needs some work; it's missing any hint of the practice of Latinising one language and Cyrillicizing a neighboring one, especially in Turkic and Siberian area, to thwart literature sharing and other means of building a cultural identity and resistance. Women in Red (WiR) is a wikiproject focused on reducing gender bias on Wikipedia by creating articles about notable women. During September will hold four month-long events: Law, Military history (World War II), writers and defunct countries. The Military history and defunct countries events might be of particular interest for members of WikiProject Soviet Union. Several months back I had the idea of adding the Russian name of Yerevan Airport to the article. A user argued that a language shouldn't be added just because a military had occupied an area. However in the Soviet Union's case it was internationally recognized as having its territories, some of which dated back to the Russian Empire (Eastern Armenia was in the Russian Empire). The Soviets also held many of the territories from the 1920s until 1991 (the Baltics were only from World War II to 1991).

What would you think of the idea of footnoting the Russian names of locations and places in the former Soviet Union, like airports, other buildings, landmarks, etc? What about populated places (cities and towns) or locations?

My idea: This would only apply to places which existed during Soviet rule. If the name changed after the end of Soviet rule, only add the Russian name(s) during Soviet rule.

I'm against it. The wikipedia articles should feature the name in English (obviously) and the names in the official language(s) of the countries they are located in. Zvartnots Airport, for example, is located in the Republic of Armenia, where the official state language is Armenian. The Republic of Armenia is the current country, of course. Several Wikipedia articles have name reflecting countries places previously belonged to: Lviv (currently in Ukraine) was once a part of Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria (German was the official language and it was known as Lemberg) and Second Polish Republic (Polish was official here and it was known as Lwow). The previous names are given to help a person who wants to study Lviv in these historical areas. Likewise if a Russian/Eastern European studies specialist wants to read articles about Zvartnots Airport in the Soviet era, say from Soviet newspapers - the airport opened in 1961 in the Soviet Union and was in it for the first 30 years - the Russian name would be helpful. While it's clear many of the post-Soviet states are proud of their independence (especially the Baltics), readers may be curious about the eras before then. Maybe i didnt fully understand your proposal but previous (official) names should anyway be mentioned. But not in cyrillic script - there is Russian wikipedia for those who are interested. The identical names were in local language aswell. But can you bring an example from anything in the Baltic states? Have you read... State continuity of the Baltic states? @Pelmeen10:: That last article is quite interesting! Because western powers disputed the USSR takeover of the Baltics, it would be something to bring up in the discussion that's different from the other former USSR states. Anyway from the Baltic states, in Latvia: Riga International Airport was built in 1973, and Spilve Airport was from the 1920s. Russian is natively written in Cyrillic and the usual practice is to include a language name if there is a tie between the subject and the language, even if one could check another wiki: Lviv has names in multiple historic languages. Considering I've read several papers on the reconstructed Finno-Ugric toponymics in Russia, originating from a period with no written sources at all, I'm sure there are similar papers about Mongolian, which has a much better coverage. Romania was not a Soviet satellite, starting with the 60s. None of the three criteria (heavy political, military and economic influence) hold up under scrutiny in Romania's case. I won't repeat myself here, I wrote everything in a dedicated new article and also in the Cold War Project talk page...Which I noticed is tagged as inactive, hence why I post here. Also in that talk page section, I linked some maps. I requested their modification for the sake of accuracy, and I make the same request here. I understand that there had long been some ambivalence as regards this matter: Socialist Republic of Romania rightly lacks the "satellite state" tag in its article, yet it is still depicted as such in the maps I hereby request updating. I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

• John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

The songwriter Yevgeny Dolmatovsky has what appears to be an excellent article... in Russian. The article in English is currently a mess with (prior to my edit) a grand total of one citation linking to an irrelevant answers.com search. Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. I have made many edits to and really expanded the page of the Supreme Court of the Soviet Union. However, there is unsubstantiated information on how the supreme court was created. Additionally, all of the secondary sources contrast in relation to when it was actually made. Thus a primary source on when it was established will have to be found. I think it was made between when it could be created from what Article 12 of the Treaty on the Creation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics stated and when it was constitutionally codified in the constitution of 1924, as the Russian wikipedia article stated the Central Executive Committee created a regulation which created it. However, the Russian article did not cite anything for this, so I just copied it into the English article, but I have yet to find this "first Regulation on the Supreme Court of the USSR", so I was hoping that if I brought this to the community's attention, someone else will be able to help find the primary source of this "Regulation". Additionally, the article since its early inception has stated that it was created on the exact date that the Russian wikipedia article said that it was created through the Central Executive Committee.

I discussed all of this in more detail in the talk page for the Supreme Court of the Soviet Union; just trying to bring attention to it here.

Also, the article may need to be bumped up in its rank from stub, as it says that it is a stub in its talk page. Additionally, people may also be able to improve the article in other ways aside from this specific thing. 120.153.215.72 (talk) 11:11, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

I've been working on an article of the territorial evolution of the USSR (in the same style as my articles on the US, Canada, and Australia) and it's become a bigger project than I anticipated. I'm unsure how to go about this, but I was hoping to put together a group of people knowledgable in Soviet history and law, preferably with the ability to read Russian, so we can comb through all my notes (and things I haven't noted) and put together as close to an authoritative list of changes as we can get?
