In most cases the member pages are already within other sub-cats e.g. of Category:American businesspeople by century. Can I just confirm, by going down to the century or the state, do you mean just the contents of Category:American businesspeople by century and Category:American businesspeople by state? OK, I should have said go lower in the case of "by state"... perhaps visual inspection may be better than automation. E.g. Kwak is in Category:American computer businesspeople, but not a century category; Noel Lee is in Category:Businesspeople from San Francisco. So your diffs are fine for removals such as S-Y Lee, but it's worth double-checking the cases where the top category is being added, as you can often do better manually, e.g. David Ji. – Fayenatic London 14:54, 9 September 2022 (UTC)

I can recurse more, for greater accuracy, and I'm currently testing how long it takes. So far, seven levels looks okay (taking just over four minutes to get).

@Fayenatic london, regarding your edit on David Ji, I feel that could probably just be done after the merge, by working through Category:American businesspeople, and just doing the stuff that can be done automatically, automatically. I suspect running at 4 or 5 levels would be best - anymore can give unwanted categories, any higher can lead to missing subcats. Your thoughts? — Qwerfjkltalk 17:25, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
