Strategic Goal 1[edit]

Increase the quality and quantity of coverage of subjects that are currently underrepresented on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on cultural content.

Outcomes[edit]

• Met with Academic Support Librarian colleagues and colleagues from the School of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine on 15 January 2018 to plan the Women in Medicine - Wikipedia editathon on 22 February 2018.
• Caroline Wallace, Snr. Partner Equality, Diversity & Inclusion at University of Edinburgh, rang me on 31st January 2018 to discuss putting Wikipedia Women in Red project work in the new Athena SWAN action plan for the next 4 years at the university to surface new role models in ten different STEM-related disciplines.
• Monthly Wiki meetup for Women in Red held on 26 January 2018 - 7 new articles created.
  • Phoebe Blyth (1816-1898) was a Scottish philanthropist and educationist from Newington in Edinburgh. She was a leading campaigner for opening up opportunities for women in professional employment and one of the first Scottish women to be elected to public office.
  • Mary D. Rosengarten - (born in Pennsylavania) was the writer of a collection of letters known as Eight Journeys Abroad.
  • E. H. Thompson - Mrs. E. H. Thompson was an American author and educator who wrote From the Thames to the Trossachs.
  • Cecilie French - a British chemist and lecturer specialising in magnetochemistry.
  • Mary Corner - a pharmacist, a worker in the British Cotton Industry and British Leather Manufacturers, Head of the Micro-analytical Section of the Chemical Research Laboratory, Vice-Chairman of the Microchemistry group and a founding member of the Microchemical Club.
  • Isabella Skea - (1845-1914) was a campaigner for women's rights from Aberdeen who became the first female headteacher of a large mixed sex board school when few female headships were achieved. Her rise to prominence from a humble background has led to her being described as "the lass o' pairts" as a female counterpoint to the notion of "the lad of pairts" prevalent in Scottish educational philosophy of the time.
  • Elizabeth (Bessie) Watson - Scottish child Suffragette and piper. Bessie wore hair ribbons in the colours of the Suffragette campaign to school. She played the pipes on the platform of Waverley Station as trains departed taking convicted women's rights campaigners to Holloway Prison and she piped outside Calton Jail to encourage the Suffragettes imprisoned there.
• Met with Leah McCabe, Learning, Teaching and Web's new Gender and Equality Images intern based at the university's Centre for Research Collections on 8 February 2018 to discuss how her work surfacing images from the university's archive collections can be supported by, and help contribute to, the Wikimedia projects.

Support the development of open knowledge in the UK, by increasing the understanding and recognition of the value of open knowledge and advocating for change at an organisational, sectoral and public policy level.

• Co-hosted a #1Lib1Ref - 1 Librarian adding 1 Reference to Wikipedia campaign day with Gavin Willshaw (Digital Curator) on 1 February 2018 at Argyle House, University of Edinburgh. To mark Wikipedia's 17 birthday, approx. 21 colleagues at the Library & University Collections division helped add over 100 citations to back up facts on Wikipedia using the Citation Hunt tool. This was augmented by the efforts of colleagues at Learning, Teaching and Web and Wikipedia in the Classroom course leaders. In total, we added 184 citations - trebling last year's total.
• Attended, and helped facilitate, the Wikidata hackathon and Future of Wikipedia event at NewSpeak House in London on 3rd February 2018. Video summary of the event.
• Added 416 'Place of Education' (P69) statements to Wikidata during the Wikidata hackathon. So now William Henry Playfair joins suffragette Bessie Watson in the Histropedia timeline of University of Edinburgh alumni (filter by gender, occupation & place of birth)
• Created short video to demonstrate how to create a Wikidata-driven timeline of university alumni for any institution.
• Attended first meeting as part of the process of becoming an accredited CMALT holder (Certified Member of the Association of Learning Technologists) on 7 February 2018.
• Met with Melissa Terras, Professor of Digital Cultural Heritage at the University of Edinburgh's College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, on 7 February 2018 to discuss areas of potential collaboration.

This was a practical workshop facilitated by developers of all experience levels and the Wikimedians in Residence to allow new & experienced Wikidata editors to find out more about Wikipedia's sister project.
The Future of Wikipedia	3 February 2018	NewSpeak House, Shoreditch, London Organiser:John Lubbick, Wikimedia UK	60-70 approx.	This was a Q&A event between Katherine Maher, Executive Director of the Wikimedia Foundation, and Lucy Crompton-Reid, CEO of Wikimedia UK, and an opportunity to discuss the future of Wikipedia with community members.

• Attended first meeting with the university's Digital Skills team on 29 January 2018 since being the role of Wikimedian was aligned more closely with this division.
• Facilitated two practice workshops for Digital Skills colleagues (18 January 2018) and colleagues at Library & University Collections (26 January 2018) so they could have a dummy run at being the lead Wikipedia trainer before doing it for real in front of an audience.
• Ran first workshop on what is now the fourth iteration of the Translation Studies MSc on 2nd February 2018 and arranged drop-in clinics to support students as they work on their Wikipedia translation assignment up to 6th April 2018. This session also provided an opportunity for us to review & discuss last semester's assignment.

• Discussing with Daria Cybulska at Wikimedia UK about the production of a new UK-based booklet of Wikipedia in the Classroom case studies.

• Wikipedia editing assignment for the Global Health MSc course - postponed until October 2018 due to Felix Stein working in Haiti at the moment.
• Liaising with Gill Hamilton (National Library of Scotland), Pauline Kelly & Lois Wolffe (Amnesty Scotland) and Sara Thomas (Wikimedian at SLIC) on a Human Rights Defenders - Global Wikithon event for Amnesty International on Saturday 19 May 2018.
• A collaboration with Michael Seery at the School of Chemistry and the Royal Society of Chemistry to be confirmed.
• Further monthly Women in Red meetups scheduled for 22 February and 30 March 2018.
• Awaiting word from Sara Mortsell at Wikimedia Sweden about her plan to collaborate on a Wikipedia in Education knowledge sharing exercise between Wikimedia Sweden, Stockholm University, the University of Edinburgh and Tel Aviv University.
• Awaiting word back to see if colleagues at the University of Edinburgh would be interested in collaborating on research into Wikimedia in Education with Professor Corrado Petrucco at the University of Padua.
• Editathon with Sophie Nicholls at Teeside University confirmed for April 27th & 28th.
• Continuing to support colleagues, Andrew Kirk and Christina Hussell, at the University of Edinburgh's Digital Skills team to run regular Wikipedia training workshops which they are now leading. • Continuing to liaise with Gavin Willshaw and Mike Bennett at Library & University Collections on the import of thesis data to Wikidata from the Edinburgh Research Archive.
• Continuing to add more data to Wikidata from the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database.
• Three events for the university's Festival of Creative Learning (19-23 February 2018) are now planned in: a Wikidata hackathon, a Histropedia workshop and a Women in Medicine editathon.
• Liaising with Susan Ross, Gaelic Wikipedian at the National Library of Scotland, on a submission for the Gaelic Studies Conference at the University of Edinburgh next summer.
• Proposals accepted for three presentations at the Open Educational Resources Conference (OER18): Wikidata in the Classroom (lightning talk), Stories of Student Empowerment - Wikipedia in the Classroom (15 minute presentation) and an EdTech editathon workshop.

• The MOOC snippet clip (right) added to Wikimedia Commons and inserted in the Arthur's Seat Wikipedia page. 283 views from 12/01/2018 to 11/02/2018 for this month. A total of 1009 views since it was added on 27 November until 11 February 2018. The Arthur's Seat Wikipedia page itself received 15,404 views in this period.
• The Wikimedian in Residence channel on Media Hopper now has 224 videos. 31 views this month with 25 plays.
• The Wikimedian in Residence channel on Youtube now has received over 25,925 views in total of its 63 videos with 125 subscribers (1,931 more views approx. since last month and 9 more subscribers, 21 'likes', and 14 'shares' since last month). These videos have been viewed in over 96 different countries this month and in 161 countries around the world over the course of the channel's lifetime.
