Suspected sockpuppets[edit]

Per this ANI thread [1], TÜRKMENISTANI ENJOYER is likely the same person as IP that got rangeblocked, therefore I'm also including the diffs of the IP.

Both removed mention of 'Azerbaijani' in Khanates of the Caucasus; Əzərbəyəniləri [2] - TÜRKMENISTANI ENJOYER [3] - IP [4]

Removed the Azerbaijani transliteration in Qajar dynasty; Əzərbəyəniləri [5] - IP [6]

Added the 'Afshar dialect' to Afshar people; Əzərbəyəniləri [7] - IP [8] HistoryofIran (talk) 12:20, 30 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Check declined by a checkuser - I can't touch anything that already has an IP identified as possibly connected, but @Blablubbs: you're familiar with the history here. -- RoySmith (talk) 14:44, 30 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
RoySmith, uh, that isn't how the privacy policy works...otherwise we'd never be able to check any SPI that has a suspected IP in the history. We just can't comment on the suspected IPs.  Confirmed with respect to the named user(s). no No comment with respect to IP address(es)., by the way. GeneralNotability (talk) 16:10, 30 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I get what you're saying, but I felt that the way the evidence in this SPI was presented, it put the connection between the account and the IP in the forefront of the argument, and thus it would be best to leave it to non-CU scrutiny. I'll confess I didn't express that very well. -- RoySmith (talk) 17:30, 30 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps you are confusing it with another account, @Dennis:, because the account is neither blocked nor locked, and never has been. JBW (talk) 12:47, 18 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Duh me. You are correct. Dennis Brown - 18:13, 18 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • There is enough resemblance to editing of previous known socks to make this fairly certain, so I have blocked the account as a sockpuppet. An indefinite block would be justified even without sockpuppetry, as the person behind account is clearly not going to edit constructively. However, in view of the sockpuppeteer's history, a clerk may like to consider whether a CU for sleepers would be a good idea. JBW (talk) 13:26, 18 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks, Roy.  CheckUser is not magic pixie dust, and I don't know how unlikely "unlikely" means in this case, but even in behaviour I can see some differences as well as similarities, so I am willing to believe it may not be the same person. I have changed the block reason to remove suggestions of sockpuppetry, but as I said above I still think a block is justified for other reasons. JBW (talk) 08:51, 19 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@JBW That sounds perfectly reasonable. I can only report on the data that's available to me, knowing full well that the data can be misleading for many reasons ranging from perfectly innocent to deliberately deceptive. And, for sure, "not a sock" does not at all imply "contributing productively to the encyclopedia". -- RoySmith (talk) 13:45, 19 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Same interest in Azerbaijan and Armenia-related topics, especially cuisine. Makes multiple major edits on List of dishes from the Caucasus, which had received little attention from users except for Əzərbəyəniləri's sockpuppets, who uniquely made similar large number of edits. Removes remarks about certain foods being Turkish, Ottoman or Azerbaijani like previous socks. Most likely comes from Germany parallel to how previous socks claimed to be living there and blocked IPs geolocated to West Germany. Aintabli (talk) 18:06, 7 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

05 February 2024[edit]

Suspected sockpuppets[edit]

Evidence:

1. The new, unnamed users began editing on the same Azerbaijani cuisine page soon after the previous sock with username user:OnlyCreatesNewWikiPages was banned.

  • user:OnlyCreatesNewWikiPages was banned on, 23 January 2024.[1]
  • First unnamed user started editing on 26th January 2024[2]
  • Second unnamed user started editing on 4th February 2024 [3]
  • Third unnamed user started editing on 23 January 2024 [4]

2. All three unnamed users edit almost exclusively on Azerbaijan-Armenia topics, and more specifically on Azerbaijani cuisine topics. This can be seen in their edit histories. This matches the behavior of the confirmed previous sock user:OnlyCreatesNewWikiPages which also primarily focused on Azerbaijani cuisine topics closer to the date of their ban. If they are not editing in topics relating to Azerbaijani cuisine, then they edit on Armenian cuisine topics. [5][6][7][8]

3. The edit descriptions of the users are quite similar,

  • The repeated reference to removal of "peacock terms" that both the sock and the unnamed user share.[9][10][11]
  • Also the heavy focus on removal of "unsourced" content, as said in edit descriptions is also what the sock and the new unnamed users share [12][13][14][15][16][17]
  • Also the references to "etymology" in edit descriptions[18][19][20]
  • Also the peculiar focus on "Soups" specifically when editing is a commonality between the accounts [21][22][23][24][25][26]

4. Finally, there is also the obvious fact that all the accounts seem to know the basics of editing despite apparently being new, and the fact that all the suspected sock accounts in question are unnamed users.

  • Those cuisine articles are a mess. The community has told us to use ECP to combat nonsense in this topic area liberally, so done. I saw one /64 active recently enough to block it, but for the most part protection is going to be more effective than chasing IPs. If the disruption spreads I am happy to put more entries into the AE log. Courcelles (talk) 18:31, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected sockpuppets[edit]

Similar edit patterns to previously confirmed sock User:OnlyCreatesNewWikiPages

Specifically:

1. Heavy focus on cuisines, specifically cuisines of Turkic ethnic groups (Azerbaijani cuisine, Turkmen cuisine) but also other food-related articles in general [45][46]

2. Edits removing "unsourced content" [47][48][49][50]

3. Edits removing "peacock terms"[51][52]

4. Similar edit descriptions when adding links, simply writing "Linked" [53][54][55][56]

5. Account created on 11th February, soon after previous socks were blocked on 7th February [57] [58]

Suspected sockpuppets[edit]

The above IP list might be incomplete. They all edit war across multiple Armenia-Azerbaijan related articles, which they are not supposed to be editing per WP:GS/AA. I have recently reported some of them here: [59]. But the disruption continues, as the sockmaster keeps hopping IPs. A checkuser is needed to establish whether all those IPs are the same banned user. Grandmaster 15:10, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Drmies, Courcelles, indeed, going after every individual sock or IP is pointless. As you guys say, maybe range blocks and ECP would be better options. The amount of sockery and IP disruption on some pages is simply ridiculous. Some pages are getting messed with from at least 2020. Maybe it would make sense to place some pages popular with IPs on extended confirmed protection? For example, pages such as Panah Ali Khan, Mehdi Qoli Khan Javanshir, Khurshidbanu Natavan, Ibrahim Khalil Khan, maybe a few others? I see from the archives of this SPI case that the IPs in this range were reported a few times before, but they would always return after the range block expires, or just hop IPs. Grandmaster 17:40, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Grandmaster I've done those four plus four more. In light of the Wikipedia:General sanctions/Armenia and Azerbaijan community decision, I'm quite happy to use ECP as a primary tool in stopping disruption. Courcelles (talk) 17:46, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Check declined by a checkuser Grandmaster, I hear you, and some of them scream out for it--I've seen this guy before--but I wonder what the point is. I looked at the archive and see that the whole area is a mess and that for some of the socks the technical evidence isn't the clincher (if I read Courcelles's earlier comment correctly). We might be better off just dropping rangeblocks (or semi-protecting articles), rather than trying to confirm something that may be difficult to confirm and won't ever show up in the logs or block notices anyway. Drmies (talk) 16:54, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly. This case hits a lot of articles covered by CTOP, and in that CTOP the community has explicitly told us to use ECP widely to stop disruption. Rangeblock what you can, ECP and log at CTOP what you need to, and waste less time playing whack-a-mole with IPv6. Courcelles (talk) 16:56, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Suspected sockpuppets[edit]

1. Account created recently in 2nd of March, soon after the previously confirmed sock I_like_Finnland was banned [60] and around the same time when currently suspected IP socks were created [61]

2. Account does not seem new to Wikipedia, clearly knows the basics of editing, including how to use talk pages [62], how to interact with other users in their talk page [63], reverting [64], etc. [65]

3. Similar editing descriptions to previous socks, including "removal of unsourced/useless information" [66][67]

4. Focus on Azerbaijan-Armenia related topics [68] , focus on cuisines and food topics in Azerbaijan-Armenia related topics [69] [70][71]

5. Discussion of my yesterday's reverts of sock and suspected sock edits of Əzərbəyəniləri on another user's page [72] [73]

6. Then there is the general confrontational attitude towards other users, calling their edits "vandalism" [74] edit-warring [75], which also coincide with the behavior of recently locked IP addresses and previous socks.

When Im back from football, Ill answer your accusations. Frankish Human (talk) 16:26, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Between the ban of „I love Finnalnd“ and me were 11 days, and u cant suspect that anyone who begins to edit in the span of 1 month after that guy was banned is a sock of him. Also using your talk page, and knowing how to revert after joining isnt soemthing suspicious, looks like u cant think far enough to see that I can watch other editors edit and then copy theyre style to make good wuality edits. You can compare it to a editing youtube channel, when you start you dont want to post bad edits, so u first learn the basics on how to edit so you can make a good edit and get a good reputation from the beginning, your interpretation is close minded. Also, many say that If they remove unsourced information..tht they did that, all I did was describe what I made and because some random ahh sock also did that, just like many administrators or other people here makes me sus? Hell nah. Also, you do realize that I edited many topics about the Franks, Limburgish, principalities in Germany and France and so on too right? This is awful evidence. Also, so me criticising your editing is bad now huh? Its just that when I discovered your reverts I noticed that they were actually worsening the page, you literially reverted the page to a worse, more unsourced, dubious and worse linked/unsourced version of itself, let me give you some examples on which sources you choose to let in the article to show how bad and poisonous to this encyclopedia they were (one of the links I wnated to send as evidence couldnt be send because it even was on the blacklist of wikipedia lmao, thats just going to show what your view of a reliable source is):
http://www.wtmlondon.com/page.cfm/action=Seminars/SeminarID=81/OSite=10nn6k_1852
https://web.archive.org/web/20220202132655/https://armeniancrimes.com/house-museum-of-uzeyir-hajibeyov/ (this one you left in is especially notable, because not only is it unaccessable[for me atleast]possibly a dead link, but also the name of the website is „Armenian Crimes“ and those werent even all, by far, If I counted all togheter I would probably be above 20 or smh, I think you cant differentiate between reliable and unreliable sources, your editing doesnt make sense and is absolutely bad for wikipedia. Also lembeta first told me that I had commited vandalism, is Lembeta now the sockpuppet of „I like Finnland“? No, Injust told hom whatbhe was doing was bad. Same with edit warribg, If someone does wdit warring I call hom out for it, thats how easy it is. With your logic everyone who says „thats edit warring“ is a sock of „i like finnland“ like your reasoning is awful and doesnt fruit at all. I recommend you to revert your edits back to the „stable version“ as you would put it. Kinda ironic that you call a site now full of unreliable sources and dead links aswell as it having propaganda speech like „liberation“ in it a „stable version. Lol. Suspected sockpuppets[edit]

1. New IP account, follows the trend of previous brigading by IP swarms suspected and confirmed to be socks of Əzərbəyənilər [76]

2. Focus on Azerbaijan-Armenia related topics primarily [77] [78] [79]

3. Removal of "unsourced" information [80]

4. Brigading articles to support previous edits by suspected and confirmed IP socks [81] [82] [83][84]

5. Despite being a "new IP user", the account clearly knows the basics of editing, reverting [85]
