I took the picture of Anjelah. It doesn't belong to anyone else, what could possibly be the problem.Mcelite (talk) 03:32, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • The nominator didn't specify any reason, but it looks a bit like a TV screenshot. --Stefan2 (talk) 13:30, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • That's beyond lame. It was not taken from a TV screenshot, the picture can be googled forever and ever. There is not any screenshot. I took her picture and no I don't have an awesome camera but it is still authentic and a descent picture.Mcelite (talk) 02:47, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • Television screenshots can usually not be found on Google since television programmes usually aren't on the Internet, at least not as individual screenshots. --Stefan2 (talk) 14:24, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • Also, could you explain why this so-called "self-made" photo has a television station watermark? --Stefan2 (talk) 14:25, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      • That's a different photo, I don't think anyone denied it was taken from television. The graphics do look similar to the other photo: I'm not sure whether that's just due to the camera software though. 135.0.167.2 (talk) 04:13, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the debate was: Kept, because it's still nothing except letters; US copyright law doesn't care about whether the text is in a stylized font or a basic font. Nyttend (talk) 03:38, 17 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Delete — the image shows "Nevada Dept. of Prisons". Nevada is not one of the state governments with a blanket waive of copyright. While this this image still could have been placed in the public domain, we'd need explicit evidence to that effect. —RP88 (talk) 13:00, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • It says that the image comes from a "1940s matchbook cover". This is too unspecific to verify the claim of lack of renewal. Stefan2 (talk) 23:09, 14 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Keep: According to this, Universal Match Corp. left the US market and is solely in the Canadian and European markets as of 1985, so 28 years has passed since the company has left the US. The matchbook you seen here and here (with the "Universal Match Corp." stamp) is from the 1940s, when Earl M. Key first took over WKEY Radio in Covington, Virginia. The original image was taken from an eBay auction, but can be updated with the current source. Just to note, the image was straightened slightly and cropped to show only the picture of Mr. Key, but otherwise unchanged.
With the combined departure of Universal Match Corp., from the United States, in 1985 and the matchbook created in the 1940s, it is safe to say that the copyright was not renewed and is now public domain. - NeutralhomerTalk • 02:23, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Just to note, I have updated the source of the image here. - NeutralhomerTalk • 02:55, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK, those better sources show that it is a matchbook. This information was previously unavailable. As a US state is mentioned, this could maybe also be taken as evidence that it comes from the United States. --Stefan2 (talk) 14:22, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

OK-I tried locating the eBay auction for this but the page is gone (too long ago). Doing an image search at Google and an eBay search turned up nothing comparable or identical. Then I went to the UPenn books and searched for renewals from 1969 onward to present, as Mr. Key bought the station in 1942. I searched under artwork and under pamphlets, contributions to periodicals, etc., using the station's call letters, WKEY. My search turned up no renewals or registrations of any sort for the call letters.

Can the file be kept if the uploader changes the license to "copyright not renewed" and copies the details of my search shown here? We hope (talk) 02:29, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: Even though the eBay auction has been over for so long, the matchbook images remain here and here. Granted this isn't eBay, but is the same matchbook image (uncropped and unstraightened). - NeutralhomerTalk • 02:53, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. The situation regarding copyright of a work published in the United States in the 1940s is very different indeed from what it was then in most of the world, and is now even in the US. At that time in the United States copyright did not automatically exist, and only came into being if it was registered. Registering copyright was worthwhile for something as significant as a book, but for trivia such a a match cover businesses normally didn't bother spending the trouble and money involved. Works published in the United States before 1964 that did not have their copyrights renewed 28 years after first publication year are in the public domain. Even if copyright was registered in the first place, something as ephemeral as a match cover would be very unlikely to have its copyright renewed, decades after its actual use. It is therefore very unlikely that the image was ever subject to copyright, and extremely unlikely that it is subject to copyright now. Unless anyone has evidence that it is subject to copyright, there is no reason at all to suppose that it is. JamesBWatson (talk) 12:46, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
